BLB News: Trade Deadline: Today is the last day in Brewers League Baseball where trading is allowed. Past this date, players can only be traded if they have cleared waivers. Normal trades are allowed again once the playoffs are over and the offseason begins.

Hit Parade: Leger Pops 5 Hits: The Wildcats tripped up the Kodiaks 8-1 today, led by Joey Leger, their 25-year-old right fielder. He tagged California pitching for 5 hits, making life miserable for them the entire game. Joey Leger singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run double in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

This season Leger is hitting .283 with 75 hits, 5 home runs, 31 RBIs, scored 35 runs and played in 76 games.

Brown Struts Stuff in California Win: In an outstanding mound performance Wade Brown fired a complete-game shutout against the Kodiaks. He tossed a 2-hitter for Wilmington to beat California 5-0 at Wildcats Ballpark.

To date Brown is 7-8 in 19 starts with a 5.28 ERA and has 104 strikeouts in 109 innings.

Martin Too Tough, Blanks Batavia: The Muckdogs were no match for Troy Martin of the Washington Bats. He totally shut down Batavia at The Capitol. In the 4-0 win, Martin tossed a 3-hitter, struck out 7, and walked 0.

Thus far this season, Martin has worked 106 innings with 74 strikeouts en route to a 8-6 record and a 2.72 ERA.

Scorpions Players Unhappy with Field Quality: According to a local beat reporter's unnamed source, multiple Death Valley players have approached management to voice concerns about the condition of the Import League Stout Division team's playing field.

The players met together in a private meeting before team batting practice and appointed an unnamed player to meet with owner, David Miranda Jr., and manager, Steve Boyd, to air complaints about the field's upkeep.

Apparently, the meeting's result was not satisfactory to the players and it is questionable if it will hurt the first place team's morale.

The Carolina Tobs Win Again, Making it 10 Straight!: The Tobs have simply been on fire lately racking up 10 wins in a row. Few fans across Brewers League Baseball will have their team come close to winning so many games in a row this year and Carolina Manager, Innis Merriam, urged fans not to take it for granted. "These guys are playing their butts off," said Merriam. "I don't know how long it will last but I hope our fans are enjoying it. We sure are!"

Injury Update for Windy City, Holly: Jamie Holly could soon be placed on the disabled list. The Windy City starting pitcher told reporters that he expects to be "out of commission" for 4 months because of a fractured elbow. He hasn't played since 08/02/2012 and, he said, he's "itchin' to get back out there."

This year Holly has compiled a 3-11 record with a 3.68 ERA.

Booth Tosses Shutout Against Muckdogs: Wilmington's DeAndre Booth dazzled the Lawrence Stadium crowd with a fine display of pitching. From the start, Booth dominated the Batavia lineup en route to a sparkling 3-0 shutout. He finished with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Super Swinger -- Cortes Slams 5 Hits: It was a magical day at the plate for the Dinos Bobby Cortes. The 33-year-old right fielder helped lift Los Angeles to a 5-4 win over the Syracuse Slammers today at Sonata Stadium. Cortes smacked 5 hits in 5 at-bats to spark his club to victory. Bertin Injured in Grounds Crew Accident: Joey Bertin suffered an unexpected injury yesterday morning during player warm-ups. As the players talked and stretched, the Death Valley Scorpions grounds crew practiced their 7th Inning Stretch "Rake and Dance" performance set to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

"I saw Joey stretching his quads," said manager, Steve Boyd. "Next thing I knew, he was laid out near the batting circle with a rake upside the head."

Part of the dance included a section where the groundskeepers swung their rakes around their heads as if the tools were a Jitterbugging partner. "One crew member", said Death Valley Scorpions team owner, David Miranda Jr., "lost his grip."

Team officials insist the incident was an accident, despite recent reports that numerous players had approached management to criticize the quality of the field and its day-to-day upkeep.

"Accident or not," said Steve Boyd. "From now on, I'll wait until they're done dancing before I have the guys start their warm-ups."

Joey Bertin will likely be out of the lineup for at least the next 10 days with a concussion.

Jimmy Rosema Sidelined for 6 Weeks: Watching Jimmy Rosema getting helped off the field today at Kennedy Field at Metropolitan Stadium, fans of the Dallas Snappers feared the worst. The news wasn't quite as bad as initially feared, but the left fielder will miss 6 weeks with a strained oblique. "We feel we've dodged a bullet. When you see a guy break down like that, you worry right away," a team spokesman said. Rosema suffered the injury running the bases in the game against the Knights.

In the current season, Rosema has put up a .306 batting average with 82 hits, 3 home runs, 25 RBI and scored 41 runs.

          Latest Injury Report on Simpson:
Joey Simpson will have to wait a while longer. The Pawtucket reliever was informed this afternoon that he will miss another 9 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. The injury has kept him off the field since 08/04/2012. Though Simpson had hoped to return soon, he has no choice but to be patient. "Gotta stay focused," he said. "Gotta stay positive."

This season Simpson has made 41 relief appearances and saved 0 games. His record is 4-4 with 45 strikeouts in 55 innings with a 3.44 ERA.

2000th Hit for Goto: Roberto Goto started out as a baby-faced rookie many seasons ago. Yesterday at Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower Field the Philadelphia veteran joined the league's 2000-hit club. Goto achieved that milestone with a 1-for-3 day in the Freedom 4-3 win over the Carolina Tobs.

He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse after the game and said, "Looking at the list of all the great players who have done this is humbling. It is a great honor to be among them."

During his career Goto has hit for a .285 average and totaled 2000 hits, 298 home runs and 1120 RBIs.

Rumors Call Jamie Raymer 'Wood Chopping' Incident a Cover Up for Affair: In the wake of Jamie Raymer's apparent back injury while helping his neighbor chop wood, rumors have begun to surface alleging the true cause of the injury to be a secret rendezvous with a previously unidentified mistress.

Raymer, who is married, has reportedly been caught sneaking around his hometown with a local massage therapist. The pair had been spotted at a local mall and Raymer's truck was reportedly spotted a local motel the day before the wood chopping incident was announced.

Neither Raymer nor the Millers have offered any formal response to the accusations. Teammates are neutral thus far on the matter.

"You can't take rumors you hear as fact until there's definite proof," said Pittsburgh Millers teammate, Ty McKay. "I could point at you and say you kicked a puppy but that doesn't make it true. What matters is that he is back on the field and playing again."

Well, good pitching also beats bad batting.

In his postgame interview the Death Valley manager said, "Fernando Hernandez made us look real bad today. He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."

Hernandez had 3 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed only 4 hits as the Maine Guides whitewashed the Death Valley Scorpions 5-0.

Currently Hernandez has a 9-7 won-lost record in 23 starts with a 3.05 ERA. He also has 90 strikeouts in 135.2 innings.
