  • Best Trade You Never Made

I started thinking about this thread a couple days ago when considering the players on my roster and how close I came to wanting to trade a couple of them over the years.

So I'm curious to read any stories about players on your roster you once put on the block, or had intense discussions to trade but either because of lack of interest or a decision to hold back, you kept around and now reap the benefits.

I don't mean players others have inquired to acquire. That's bound to happen. I mean players you wanted to move.

Think of this like the Yankees being this close to trading AAA pitcher Mariano Rivera in a blockbuster deal to acquire Baltimore's David Wells.

Chuck Durham and Chuck Lindsey when I was in Hartford and Clay was up to his usual injury shenanigans.

Colin Cash and Danny Salcedo when I sold off that whole team the first 2 seasons. I wasn't sure if Cash was manipulated heavily and Salcedo had his worst statistical seasons of his career. It was nearly impossible to tell what was real or fake about all those players.

I never thought I'd be able to go from 48 to 69 to 113 wins like that after the whole team was gutted or I traded them. It's amazing what a good draft, a couple key FA's, and a few of the right trades can do for a team pretty quickly. That 3rd offseason after I took over could have gone in a whole different direction if I made one or two deals that I thought twice about.

I'll start this off with what I mentioned in the underrated thread.

Henry Rodrigues was once on my trade block. I already had an outfield of McPherson, Verba and Perkins. I envisioned Jamie McInturf being my DH because he couldn't catch. So it made Rodrigues the odd man out.

I placed him on the block asking for a catcher in return for an outfielder. Figured, maybe someone had an abundance in a place I didn't with a need to add a power hitting outfielder.

I received zero pms. I think Rodrigues came up in some other talks as a "throw in" to increase my package but usually it was met with "I have enough outfielders." (To be fair, the GMs that said this were right. They had too many and would be in my predicament).

So Rodrigues stayed. After I decided I couldn't be patient with a defensive minded catcher that couldn't hit, I placed McInturf as catcher and gave Rodrigues at - bats at DH.

And now Rodrigues is among the league leaders in Home runs and RBI.

I got lucky on that one.

Pat came fairly close to getting Adan Neubauer in a trade not all that long ago. It would have looked like a steal now.

Almost gave up heaven and earth for CF- Artie Clemons (NY) . Last second we pulled back. Used some of pieces to that broken deal to acquire SP Johnathon Burns and pulled out 2 DL flags.

Clemons is a decent player, but looking back glad we didn't do it.

Also think I offered up Tyler Quinn once for a very young hot prospect in Luther Bennerman but luckily Gryodork always rejected my trade offers.

                      Missed this.

It's too bad Durham and Lindsey played for teams affected by Clay.

Smart to see Cash was real.

I've still always had questions about Colin Cash as well as Jody Richards. I don't know if their injury ratings were ever edited, but I had a feeling about both the entire time.

I remember when Cash was drafted, Clay made a big fuss about how good he was going to be. And all but guaranteed he would be a top prospect. My scout, who at the time was pretty top notch, was not a fan of Cash. Didn't like his bat or his glove.

I'm not saying either were edited but I have a feeling that Clay might have "known" they were going to be good.

I think Jody Richards was definitely edited. Before we knew what Clay was doing, I remember watching his development closely. He started 3-5-7 and ended 5-7-8 by the time he got to the bigs.

Low and behold he's still there according to my scout.

As for this thread... I way have more "trades I should have made" than anything relevant to the intended topic.
