Well, the pick had been advertised since the draft period started, without one guy expressing interest. Feels like everyone hates the talent level in this year's class, me included. There isn't a single player I want to give 1st round bonus to, especially because I already have one pick in the books.
Wasn't the first time I tried throwing this pick away either. I had the 1.23+32 offered for anyone up until the C went off the board at 15. I offered this deal first to mike, who was in a bit of a wait and see, and he picked 2.28 or something anyway, which is even later.
But I like every deal to have potential to work out for me, and I think this one still does. It's better to not pick at all than straddle yourself with a useless $5 million player. Financial discipline is an extreme priority for the Bees this offseason because of Randy Boone's upcoming mega-deal. And as far as the extra 7th we get, that's reaaaaaaally not great. But, we see it as a free UDFA with $0 bonus. Millions can be saved by securing a guy in the 7th, versus competing for him against the other 32 teams in the league. I am certain someone would have signed my guard, Jerald Henry, who was the 7.32 for us last year.
Really though, I hope to never be backed into a lousy corner like this one again. But when you do, you gotta take the 'out' that's available. For Brad, the extra cap cost should be a minor concern. And the 7th, a very minor price to pay for a small increase in certainty.
