  • Helpful tip: Draft pick value chart

Here's a handy chart to use when trading draft picks. I know there's been some confusion and discussion about how much draft picks in each round are worth, so hopefully this will serve as a guide when making trades that involve picks.

In general, with trades involving draft picks, please try to stay within a range of 12.5% of the total value of the picks when working out a trade.

This means that if Team A offers a draft pick valued at 1000, Team B must offer a package of picks worth at least 875 points and not more than 1125 points for this to be considered an acceptable trade. There's some wiggle room on either end of this equation and I'm very hesitant to carve any numbers in stone, but try to use the 12.5% number as a rough guideline as to whether the trade you've worked out is reasonable.

      Simple, thanks.

You're a firm but fair leader.

How are future draft picks treated? I would guess there would be less value in future picks because they don't have a fixed value? Should we have a rough formula for that? Or are there others in leagues that have a way of addressing this?

Generally, I would think it would be best to use the average value of the 16th and 17th picks in any given round. That puts the value right in the middle of the round, and would come out to the following for each pick:

          1st: 975
          2nd: 405
          3rd: 182.5
          4th: 69
          5th: 33.75
          6th: 20.8
          7th: 8

This is just a suggestion though, I haven't discussed it with anyone, but it seems fairly logical IMO.

The rules are even less stringent for future picks, since they represent more of a risk/reward speculation than a tangible value. Averaging the values out to the middle of the round is a good guide, but if you're trading with a team that you know is going to be lousy next year, chances are their pick will be high and the trade will be judged accordingly.

Common sense is really all that's required here, not more rules.

Just wanted to know if we wanted to avoid any problem with someone mortgaging their future. Being that owners come and go and such.
