  • Phoenix rising?

After what could be deemed a successful 2017 season where Phoenix made the post season for the first time in 4 years head coach Roger "the gambler" Kinney was very pleased with his new team. Veteran qb Carl Reese returned to form finishing in the top 10 in yards and competitions, Will Shumway had his 4th 1000 yard season and rookie WR Alfred Morrison set an OSFL record with 135 catches and finished 2nd in yardage.

Kinney was most pleased about was the return to form of all pro DE Isaac Andrews, who led the league in sacks and won the defensive MVP award and his second all pro selection.

"The gambler" was also effusive in his praise of last years 3rd round pick Monty Lester, the LB from wake had a productive season starting 15 games until falling to a broken collarbone right before the playoffs.

"would have been a different game with him in there" said Kinney, high praise indeed, as Phoenix lost tho the eventual champs Washington and a well fought contest. with Phoenix losing by a late FG.

Looking forward Phoenix will have to decide what to do with Reese, who will turn 38 this November, has been effective but not efficient being in the bottom 1/3 in completion %. Enter Marcus Ramsey and Buddy Foley. Ramsey in his 3rd year looks to be the favorite in spite of him being undersized, Foley is a little more in the classic QB mold but still raw and there have been questions about his arm strength.

Phoenix's outlook is good but its defense will NEED to improve if they want to improve on last years 8-8 record.
