  • Brooklyn 2060 review and 2061 offseason outlook

9-7 lost in wildcard round of playoffs
    6 draft picks 1st is 1.21
$61.0mil cap space, $48.95mil after draft

2060 was a big success for Brooklyn marking our first winning record and first playoff appearance since 2046. We hope and will strive for more to come however I am aware we had one of the weakest schedules in the league last year (I think it was the 2nd easiest schedule). We have a solid foundation to build on and cap issues are for the most part behind us. That being said much of our team is reaching the down slope of their career. Based on average age we should be in win now mode and yet we only barely stumbled into the playoffs last year on one of the weakest schedules in the league. I fear next year may not be so kind to us.

    Format:
[player name]: [age] [overall rating] [last year on contract] [cap hit]
[thoughts on player and their future with the team]

QB: 3 on contract out of 3 possible roster spots, 3/3
Amos Simmons: 28yo 47ovr signed through 2062 $2.57mil cap hit
Played well in 2060, likely to hold out given his performance relative to his salary
    Chester McKnight: 28yo 33ovr 2061 $1.52mil
Flashed in the one game he played in but bars are not great, emergency backup if Cooley is still not ready. Chemistry is a plus.
    Gabe Cooley: 25yo 21/51ovr 2063rk $3.12mil
Hoping he pops in the preseason or at least stays pretty much the same and we may give him a shot at starting especially if Simmons holds out. Chemistry is a problem but we can get that sorted after we determine if he is our guy or not.
QB Summary: our QB room is full of game managers and the overall cap hit reflects that. No one is getting payed here; we are willing to move on from anyone and will always keep an eye out for a potential franchise QB. However this is not a priority position needing to be addressed this offseason; we may still take shots late in the draft. Low Priority.

    RB/FB: 4/5
    *Karl Huffman: 28yo 81ovr 2062 $24.0mil
Played well in 2060, we want to use him as our workhorse in the offense but endurance may be a concern.
    Kendal Lofton: 24yo 47ovr 2062rk $1.68mil
Showed he can produce in this offense if called upon however fumbles have been problem for him. Even though he is a good player we will likely let him drop once his contract expires.
    Bob Copeland: 28yo 30ovr 2061 $2.23mil
We enjoy the stability Copeland provides as our backfield leader year in and year out, however his conflict with Cooley will be an issue if Cooley becomes our starting QB. We will have to wait till exhibition to make a decision whether to bring Copeland back after the 2061 season. We may let him test the FA market next year even if we plan on bringing him back.
    Duane Keck: 28yo 50ovr 2063 $2.45mil
We are happy with Keck, and given his long contract, we see no reason to look elsewhere at FB.
RB Summary: The RB situation is workable for one more year but necessary changes are inevitably coming in the next few seasons. Low Priority.

    TE: 3/4
    *Mackenzie Clemons: 27yo 75ovr 2064 $16.0mil
We lost Clemons early on last season due to injury but we are happy to have him back. He will be a huge boost to our offense if he can remain healthy next year. Contract is looking good for the next 3 years.
    Dashawn Brock: 31yo 33ovr 2061 $4.75mil
Brock is our receivers captain, but I am not sure how valuable that is at this point. We may cut him given his age, overall rating, and cap hit.
    Ernest Long: retired
    Jonathan Buckner: 25yo 41ovr RFA
We signed Buckner after Clemons went down last season and he produced well when he played. Given that he is restricted and we need some depth at TE we will go ahead and sign him.
TE Summary: The way we ran our offense last year and given all the mouths to feed on this offense, we only really need one good TE and that is Clemons. However last year showed the necessity of having a solid backup option. Therefore we need to add depth at TE. Medium Priority.

    WR: 3/5
    *Heath Walker: 28yo 66ovr 2064 $18.27mil
Walker played really well in 2060 and played a full season! His contract is ballooning a bit because we gave him what he asked for last year, which may end up being a problem especially when he drops to the #2 WR on our roster. For now we are happy with him and his contract.
    *Gilbert Taylor: 24yo 65ovr 2063rk $13.41mil
Taylor had a good rookie season. We hope he pops in the preseason up to his rightful 70+ level or at least does not drop anymore and he will be a star on this offense for seasons to come. Being the 3rd overall pick last year his contract really cannot be touched until the 2062 offseason.
    Donnell Rhodes: 25yo 35ovr UFA
Rhodes has solid bars but no route running we will not look to resign him.
    Tevin Mason: 26yo 24/32ovr 2061 $1.76mil
Mason has been a roster filler his entire time with this team. Will look to replace him with someone we are a bit more excited about.
    Les Filby: 34yo 43ovr UFA
Filby played really well for us last year in the slot. However he is likely to take a big hit to his ratings in the preseason. We may still look to bring him back.
WR Summary: Our starters are set for the next 3 years. We do have depth spots to fill including the slot receiver. Hopefully we can find some good young prospects in the draft or LFA. Medium Priority.

    OT: 3/4
    *Curtis Patricola: 31yo 80ovr 2061 $25.97mil
Patricola may decline this preseason. However he probably has 2 or 3 more good years left in the tank. We will look to resign him to a short extension and hopefully lower his cap hit in the process.
    Nathaniel Hicks: 26yo 60ovr 2064 $12.49mil
We have Hicks on a favorable contract given his performance last year (1st team all-league). No changes needed here.
    Trevor McAddley: 26yo 37ovr UFA
McAddley was the 3rd overall pick in the 2057 draft. A major weight is lifted from our cap space with him hitting FA. We will not look to resign him.
    Dana Davis: 26yo 30/44ovr 2062rk $1.99mil
Davis does not fit with the style of lineman that we need on this team. We may cut him to free up space for someone who makes a better fit and we feel good about stepping in should an injury occur.
OT Summary: Our Tackles are set for next season however we will need to find a young replacement for Patricola soon. If an opportunity presents itself in the draft we will jump on it. Low Priority.

    OG: 2/4
    Bryant Warren: 36yo 60ovr 2061 $18.28mil
Warren will likely decline again this preseason. However, he is our OL leader and we hope he will still be serviceable for one more year. We may look to extend his contract in order to lower his cap hit. If he drops too much we may have to cut him to save the cap space.
    Malcolm Judy: 24yo 29/51ovr 2062rk $2.12mil
We were high on Judy last offseason until he dropped in the preseason, most of that drop being in his run blocking rating. We hope he can pop back up, but if not he will still make a solid backup and can start in a crunch if need be once he fully develops.
    Nathan Gaynord: 25yo 33/45ovr UFA
Gaynord is a decent backup and potential OL leader however we may let him slide given that he is not a long term answer that we are looking for.
    Rick Witt: 29yo 51ovr UFA
Witt played well as our LG last season. We will look to resign him to maintain cohesion if we can get him fairly cheap.
OG Summary: With Warren aging, Witt and Gaynord on FA, and Judy not looking like a future starter for us. We need to find starting talent fast, hopefully we can find a prospect worth spending our first pick on and may need to sign someone from FA. High Priority.

    C: 2/3
    Joshua Cooper: 26yo 38/57ovr UFA
Cooper is angry with us for not starting him even though he is a 7th rnd pick and has never started for anyone in his career. We would like to resign him but that may be an obstacle.
    Weston Bates: 23yo 30/44ovr 2063rk $1.51mil
Bates is a solid backup but we would like someone better as the starter.
    Jonathan Fulcher: 34yo 43ovr 2061 $3.5mil
Fulcher had an outstanding season last year. We will keep him on the roster through the end of his contract, but given his age and overall rating, he is not the long term answer at C and may not even be viable for the 2061 season.
C Summary: We are potentially lacking a starting caliber C if Cooper does not come back and Fulcher takes a big hit in preseason. We may take shots mid to late in the draft to hopefully find a good prospect. High Priority.

    DE: 3/4
    Salvador Castanie: 30yo 56ovr UFA
Castanie is a decent role player at DE. We may attempt to resign him in order to maintain cohesion.
    Gilbert Crawford: 22yo 34/43ovr 2063rk $1.85mil
Crawford is a pass rush specialist. He has a terrible run defense bar. His pass rush bars are mediocre. Unless he pops in the next few seasons he will continue to be a backup/role player and we will probably not renew his contract.
    Louis Ogden: 31yo 57ovr 2061 $9.0mil
Ogden was our best pass rusher last season but that is not saying much. Given his age and cap hit we may end up cutting him especially if we can find someone better.
    Devante James: 25yo 67ovr 2061 $6.15mil
James ended his holdout around week 5 last season and proceeded to put up probably the worst production of his career. His heart must have not been in it… More likely, his bars just are not well suited for putting up huge numbers as a DE (low prt and medium prs). He may hold out again. To resign him will likely cost around sub 20mil which I am not sure he is worth. He will probably fetch some trade value, but his run defense skill could prove invaluable given the division we are in.
DE Summary: Again we had one of the worst pass rush % in the league last year and that is reflected in my lukewarm feeling toward every DE on this roster. This team sorely needs a star player at the DE position and we will be looking for one in the draft and in FA. High Priority.

    DT: 4/4
    Louis McFall: 24yo 31/53ovr 2063rk $1.46mil
McFall is a solid backup I will try to keep him on the team so long as his rating stays relatively the same.
    Randal Crigger: 24yo 58/58ovr 2062rk $1.73mil
Crigger is a serviceable starter. He is not a great pass rusher, but he can serve as a good compliment to the hopeful and potential stars on the D Line. We will look to keep him on the team for as long as possible.
    Kyle Best: 24yo 45/60ovr 2063rk $1.72mil
Best was our 4th round pick last year and looks like he may overtake Crigger for the starting 1-tech position. He is pretty much identical to Crigger, which is nice because they can be rotated without too much thought.
    Justin Stokes: 31yo 67ovr 2061 $21.73mil
Stokes is on the decline of his career. We will look to resign him to a short contract to hopefully lower his cap hit and get a couple more years out of him.
    Kim Darden: 35yo 46ovr UFA
We signed Darden after Stokes went down last year. We will not be looking to resign him.
DT Summary: We are set at DT for next year and likely for the next few years. We have 3 promising young prospects and I am excited to see how they develop over the next few years. Low Priority.

    LB: 7/7
    Josiah Flanigan: 23yo 32/45ovr 2063rk $1.41mil
Flanigan does not have the skills we are looking for at the LB position and he is overweight for a 43 linebacker. He is a good special team player, but I do not think that will be enough to keep him on the roster after his rookie contract is up.
    Maurice Collins: 33yo 44ovr 2061 $5.06mil
Collins is a solid starting MLB or WLB for us but he is likely to decline some more this offseason, he is not a really great defensive front leader either, so we may decide to cut him in order to get a bit younger at the position.
    Jacob Lentz: 25yo 23/41ovr RFA
We were able to pick Lentz up in LFA as a rookie last year after going undrafted. We thought he might be promising since we had him on our draft board as a possible 7th rounder however he has not really panned out so far. We will resign him but he may not end up making the team.
    Ed Garrison: 28yo 61ovr 2061 21.62mil
Garrison continues to be the lynchpin of our LB group even though he is slightly overweight to be a 43 SLB. We will look to extend his contract this year, and hopefully lower his cap hit in the process.
    Cornelius Huffman: 24yo 40/44ovr 2062rk $1.78mil
Huffman can be a role player on this team but he does not have the bars we are looking for in a starter. We likely will not resign him after his rookie contract is up.
    Avery Arquette: 22yo 35/52ovr RFA
Arquette is an exciting young prospect that we were able to find the in LFA as an undrafted rookie last year. Hopefully his bars maintain this offseason and he will be a starter for us at MLB.
LB Summary: We will likely move Bob Murphy to WLB since he played most of 2060 at that spot and played his best there. With that we already have our starters and our backups on a mediocre LB crew. We will keep our eyes open for interesting prospects later in the draft or in LFA, but we can work with what we have here. Low Priority.

    CB: 5/6
    Randy Donovan: 30yo 57ovr 2061 $9.69mil
Donovan performed even better in 2060 than in 2059 further confirming that he had his hands full as the CB1 but excels as the CB2. It’s too bad that he is nearing the end of his career and will likely decline this offseason. He will probably ask for a raise in order to extend his contract, given his performance last year, in which case we may just let him test FA next year.
    Peyton Harley: 24yo 30/40ovr RFA
We will resign Harley since he is a RFA but he may not make the team.
    Edwin Hudson: 26ovr 41ovr 2061rk $2.27mil
Hudson is a decent nickel corner. However, we will let him test free agency next year.
    William Shannon: 22yo 31/52ovr 2063rk $1.69
Shannon will serve as a solid nickel or RCB on passing downs but given his run defense I would not want him as the starting CB2, especially in this division.
    *Teddy Horn: 24yo 73ovr 2062rk $14.68mil
Horn is the star of our Defensive backfield. We will certainly try to extend his contract next offseason.
CB Summary: Our CB1 is set and we have plenty of options at nickel and dime however with Donovan getting older we may need to replace the starting CB2 soon. Medium Priority.

    S: 3/4
    Bob Murphy: 25yo 49ovr 2061rk $4.2mil
Murphy has been a solid piece on our defense so we will likely try to extend his contract this offseason so long as it is not too expensive. As mentioned above we will be moving him to WLB full time.
    Oscar Ridenour: 28yo 61ovr 2061 $14.76mil
Ridenour is a beast at the SS position. We will extend his contract this year and hopefully reduce his cap figure in the process.
    Brock Barber: 25yo 49ovr RFA
Barber has been a decent backup. His bars seem a bit more suited to the CB position so we may decide to move him there.
    Monty Howe: 27yo 45ovr 2061 $2.48mil
We like Howe’s bars for a safety however he has a red flag and he also did not play very well last season playing mostly at FS. That being said none of our safeties have done that well at FS including Ridenour playing there parts of last year and before. We will likely keep Howe on the team but not extend his contract.
S Summary: Ridenour is a clear starter and every down SS. Howe is questionable. Murphy and Barber may be moving to new position groups, so we will need at least one more safety. I don’t think we need anything special to fill the spot(s). Medium Priority.

    P/K/LS
    P) Gus Godfrey: 36yo 55ovr 2061 $3.74mil
Godfrey had a good 2060 season but he is getting old and likely to decline even further this offseason to the point that we can easily replace him with someone better in LFA.
    K) Nate Collins: 31yo 63ovr UFA
We were really happy with Collins’ performance last year and will try to sign him back for 2061 and beyond.
    LS) Bill Franz: 30yo 21ovr 2061 $2.8mil
Franz is a mentor to centers and that alone is enough to convince me to continue to extend his contract until he retires.

    2061 Priorities
    High Priority: OG, C, DE
Medium Priority: TE, WR, CB, S
Low Priority: QB, RB, OT, DT, LB

Overall offseason outlook: 39 players on contract + 5 RFAs to resign + 6 draft picks = 50. Coming in to this offseason we have a lot of ageing veterans on the last year of their contract, I think many of them will take a pay cut for an extension, especially since many of them were more highly rated when they signed their original contract; I think on net we will free up money after extending veteran contracts. We have roughly $48.95mil + whatever else we free up to basically sign 4 to 8 players. Accounting for the fact that I mentioned at the beginning that this is a fairly old team on average. We should be aggressive in FA in order to get that one or two pieces that will get us to the next level.

Nice write up! That would suck to waste Bobby Murphs PR bar by moving him to LB, i'd keep him at SS just keep him at WLB in the depth chart

Ah man you're right, I forgot about that, so maybe yea I'll leave him as a S.

I like him, gives you a lot of flexibility in the 43. Especially bc you don’t need to carry that many LBs. You got a solid squad, crossing my fingers for you Amos doesn’t give you contract issues, he should play even better in his 2nd season with the O. Are you sure he’s at vet min this season? I don’t know the min $ #s? That’d be perfect if you could cap him out

        • #5
No I hadn't realized his cap hit was $2.57 he was at vet min last year but now I think he is beyond it. Even so, I kind of want to let him hold out, just to get a look at my other QBs.
