Maulers OLB Levi Costa

One of my first draft picks in OSFL, Levi Costa, is in the last year of his contract and we've been trying to sign him since the post season began. However, he still hasn't signed and we are on our last offer to try to bring him into the fold for the next 5 seasons. If we can't sign him, I guess we'll have to go with the old franchise and sign. I was rather hoping to use my franchise tag in another way, so we'll hope Costa likes our final offer of this season.

A big sigh of relief from management and fans as Costa signs JUST before the new season begins, where we would have had to use the franchise tag.

Next season, we will have no player in the league more than 8 seasons. If not the youngest team, we should be near the top of the list for youngest teams in the league. Hopefully, we can get many players together, and keep the team together for a long, long time, building chemistry and starting to be a winning organization before the move to Huntsville.

Draft of 2038...

At 1.7, we get our top rated safety, Claude Dugger. We believe he is going to be a big star at SS for us. I expect him to win several awards :)

We make a trade with Ohio to get 1.30, where we happily pick ILB Philip Bergeron. I was going to wait it out to see if he made it to the early 2nd, but I got scared and pulled the trigger.

Overall, our defense has been abysmal in the past few seasons. Hopefully, our last draft and this one will help us begin to solidify our defense. Last season we got OLB Reggie Wilkins at 1.6 and FS Juan Cobb at 1.29, plus DE Earnest Knight at 2.10. This year, we get SS Claude Dugger at 1.7 and ILB Philip Bergeron at 1.30.

So, now our defense is looking much better. Add some veterans, like former 2nd round pick OLB Levi Costa, free agent acquisition ILB Marco Greeley, and former 2nd round pick NT Rich Sharp... and 8 of our 11 starters are set, all of whom are relatively young. Our weakness right now is at CB, which we will need to address either in FA or through a trade... maybe in the draft next season. Unless we can find a solid trade for Hernandez, he'll be with us for a while and adds another spot filled.

Our offense is basically Floyd Mallory and Ike Baker. Prescott had two good seasons, followed by a subpar season. This is going to be his last shot to prove he is worthy to be our quarterback for the long haul. If not, after our defense is set QB will be our #1 priority.

Right now, we feel good about the future of our defense. That's a good start for us.
