Let's take a look at our draft class, now that the training camp and a preseason game have passed by.
1.19 RCB Julio McCreadie. 23/62 with a lot of potential. The most important areas... bump and run and man to man, both look good. Surprisingly, he has a good INT potential too, but I really can't imagine that staying.
I am hopeful McCreadie, plus Hernandez, my 2.6 pick last season, can become a dynamic duo at CB. With all the blitzing we do on defense, we need a couple of guys who can hold their own at CB.
2.18 SS Clifton Springer. 23/48. Didn't end up where I'd hoped, especially in Bump and Run coverage (which the SS ends up in a lot in our defense).
3.17 FB Joe Swift. 8/10. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Was hoping he'd become a good run blocker. He won't last very long on the roster, that's for sure.
4.19 G DeAndre Weydahl. 20/33. Again, not what I'd hoped for when making this pick. Unless something unusual happens, he's another guy who won't last long on the roster.
5.18 T Mitch Gitler. 25/46. While I expected more from Weydahl, I didn't expect much from Gitler. If he can hold on to the potential he is showing, he will be a very good backup for us for a long time.
6.17 QB Clayton Wappler. 11/22. I was hoping to find a decent backup with him, but he lost a lot of the potential I thought he might have. I took a shot with him using a late round pick. Right now, looks like a swing and a miss.
7.19 CB Brendan Turnbull. 17/22. Whatever small expectations I had for him he missed.
Overall, the top picks are the ones that are crucial in any draft. If you can hit a couple of later round picks, you've had a good draft (at least this is my opinion). Only one guy in the 3rd round and later who, with how he looks right now, will make the roster long term. McCreadie will hopefully pan out and Springer should be, at worst, at decent backup. Swift is a complete bust, and only 5th round pick Gitler looks like a keeper now. 3 out of 7 keepers is not a solid draft. C- C due to the good look of McCreadie right now, C- because less than half the picks are keepers.
