In 2034, times were tough. The team got a new owner after the offseason ended and at least part way through the preseason. Even with his hands tied, the team started out the season strong, after so many years of poor performances. Let's look back at 2034, before we move on the the new season.

Game 1 vs division foe Boston. A 27-0 win. This was a big, big win to start the season, and it was a win in a dominating fashion. Defense gave up 178 total yards, QB David West was 18/30, 161 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT for a 96.6 QB Rating. The defense was the star of this game.

Game 2 at Waco. A 27-10 win. Defense gave up 291 yards of offense. West was 15/24, 130 yards, 0TD and 1 INT. The running game was the star of this game, getting 152 yards on the ground and almost 5 yards per rush.

Game 3 vs San Francisco. A 26-23 loss. A FG with 27 seconds left sealed the victory for San Fran. This would become a theme... losing close games. The defense tried the bend but don't break style, and it didn't work out too well, as they gave up 422 yards of offense, but held SF to 2 TDs in 5 red zone attempts. Defense shut down the SF running game, but couldn't stop the pass. The special teams played very well. The offense also played well, with West going 20/31 for 222 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. JB Jennings was the star of the game, getting the first 100 yard rushing game this season with 102 yards on 14 carries.

Game 4 vs North Liberty. A 14-12 loss. Second straight game where we lost a close game. Our red zone offense was really the difference in this game, not scoring a TD in 3 red zone attempts. Defense played solid football, giving up 297 yards of offense. But, ultimately, West and the offense couldn't punch the ball into the NLB end zone. West ended with decent numbers, going 21/31 for 205 yards, with no TD or INT. But it wasn't enough.

Game 5 vs Chicago. Another close loss, 27-24. Although, Chicago had the game well in hand going into the 4th Quarter, up 27-7, we made a valiant comeback effort but fell short. The big play of the game was the 87 yard INT return by Chicago, on West's 2nd INT of the season. The defense gave up 333 yards of offense, but allowed only 1 TD in 3 red zone attempts. The offense gave up a TD on the INT, and the offense didn't look too bad, netting 322 yards and scoring 17 in the 4th to make it a close game. Special teams really played great, and was probably the big reason for the game to end up close, as they continued to win the field position battle in this game. West went 26/41 for 245 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

Week 6 was a bye. Game 6 vs Camden. A 24-23 loss. 4 losses in a row of 3 points or less, all at home. With the exception of the Chicago game, all these games could have gone either way, after two dominating wins to start the season. We could just as easily been 5-1 or 6-0 at this point. With 47 seconds left, Kicker Junkin hits a 32 yarder to take the lead, 23-21. As the clock winds down, Camden wins the game with a 41 yard FG. Very emotional loss for us. Defense gave up 302 yards, while the offense got over 400 yards, even though our running game was completely shut down, averaging less than 3 yards per carry. The big play this time was against us on Special Teams, where Camden managed to get a 73 yard punt return for a TD. The 1st two games of the season showed what we could do, and the next 4 showed who we are... a team that finds a way to lose games. We don't get beat, we give the games away. West had a good game, going 20/29 for 304 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. 6 games, just 2 INT. Playing very well so far.

Game 7 at St Paul. Loss 26-20. St Paul's offense looked great at home, netting 384 yards. They ran well, passed well, and didn't make any big mistakes. Our defense did one thing right... kept them to 2 TDs in 5 red zone attempts. Of course, we have had a lot of red zone practice :) For some reason, our coaching staff got away from our usual offense, and threw the ball 56 times, while running only 16... not a very balanced attack, and we paid for it. West again had a solid day, though, going 29/56 for 287 yards, 2 TD and 0 INT. 7 games, 2 INT. Remember this at the end of the season.

Game 8 at Boston. Loss 24-21, Boston gets their revenge for the first game of the season. Again, on the road, we find ourselves with an unbalanced offensive attack. Two big plays are basically the game... a 56 yard TD pass and an 86 yard run, and Boston gets 14 easy points. Take away those 142 yards, and Boston 231 yards of offense. So, our defense played well except for those two plays, LOL. Offense looked good, even though we threw the ball too much, getting 399 yards and going 3 for 3 in the red zone. West still going strong halfway through the season, completing 30 of 52 for 270 yards and 3 TDs with no INT. 8 games, 2 INT.

Game 9 at Dakota. Loss 24-10. Our first loss of more than 6 points all year. but our 7th straight loss. We are 2-7, and still scored more points than we've allowed. The losing seems to be wearing on the team. Our very good kicker missed a FG, West threw an INT... Road trip plus losing = not good for the team. West 22/38 for 223 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. 9 games, 3 INT.

Game 10 vs Brooklyn. 20-14 win. I guess we needed to get home and play a division rival. Even though there was a good amount of offense, this was really a defensive struggle with 2 teams doing a lot of passing. Over 700 combines yards. But, many, many short possessions. The game goes to overtime, and each team has 3 possessions. We miss a FG in our 2nd possession after getting an INT, but win it in our 3rd possession with a big 20 yard catch by Mallory. West ends up 34/52 for 305 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT. 10 games, 3 INT.

Game 11 vs Memphis. 34-3 win. Memphis recently changed ownership, so they were in a bad spot, and we had an easy day. Our defense created 5 turnovers and kept them to 167 yards of offense. West 23/33 for 176 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT. 11 games, 3 INT.

Game 12 at Columbus. 7-3 loss. Defensive struggle, and the only TD of the game came off West's 4th INT of the season. 233 yards of offense for us, 184 yards of offense for Columbus. West's turnaround also begins here. He goes 24/37 for just 150 yards, 0 TD and 3 INT. Doubles his INT total for the year in 1 game.

Game 13 vs New Orleans. A 24-23 win. Our last win of the season. The last game where we play well. Lord knows what happens to the team during the week after this game, but they are never the same. 2 more INT for West, including another INT returned for a TD. But we still find a way to win. West goes 21/35 for 211 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT. In 2 games, went from 3 INT to 8.

Game 14 at Brooklyn. 51-7 loss. Wow. At this point, we were 5-8, with more points scored than allowed. This was the first time all season we were crushed. Dakota was the only team to beat us by more than 6 points up until now. Brooklyn completely dominated this game. They got up early, and ran the ball down our throat the rest of the game, still amassing almost 400 yards of offense, while our offense barely broke 200. West continued to find the other team's players, going 19/35 for 209 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. Our only TD was a 75 yard pass play halfway through the 4th Quarter, likely against the 3rd team defense, so without that his stats are downright ugly. West now hits 10 INTs. After game 11, he had 3 total INT. In 3 games, he's more than tripled that number.

Game 15 at Port City. 34-6 loss, and destroyed team morale. Offseason changes will need to be made to turn this team around. Port City has 412 yards of offense, and we have 221. Again, complete domination against our broken team. West goes 14/27 for 147 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT.

Game 16 at Camden. 17-0 loss. Thank God for the end of the season. Lost our last 3 games of the season 102-13. We just fell apart at the end, and it's very embarrassing. I tweaked our offense a little to try to find something, but I didn't make massive changes. Same with the defense. But, we played bad and worse, and even worse! It's over. I wish I could trade the whole team and get new players and a new attitude in here. Anyway, 190 yards in offense, defense didn't play too bad only giving up 274. We should win games where we give up under 20 points, so that's something. West finishes the season going 18/34 for 172 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT. First 11 games, 3 INT. Last 5 games, 11 INT. WTF??? Mallory finishes the season on a strong note, catching 11 passes for 99 yards.

Through 13 games, we were really on the cusp between good and bad. So many close losses that could have gone either way. Then, who knows what the hell happened. I admit I was trying to get Mallory the ball a little more at the end to help his stats once we were out of it. But I didn't make BIG adjustments on offense, just threw a little more, and mostly still shorter passing. Defense didn't change much all season, as I didn't really have the talent to be able to try too much different. A one dimensional defense, basically.

2034 is now behind us. Time to look forward to 2035.

    2035 - It's a new season!

    Retired
G Grant Stewart. A 1st round pick in 2024, Stewart was signed to a 2 year deal in 2034. After a tough ending to the season, and with morale at an all time low, Stewart decided to call it quits. He started 12 games for us. He allowed 4 sacks, and had 14 Key Run Blocks in 43 chance, a 32.6% success rate.

ILB Clifton Plake. A late 2nd round choice in 2024, Plake was also signed to a 2 year deal in 2034. He played all 16 games for us in 2034, starting 13. He had 79 tackles and 24 assists. He captained our defense, and helped us to have a strong year defensively.

S David Danek. A 5th round pick in 2024, he was signed to a 2 year deal in 2034. He was another veteran anchor in our defense, starting all 16 games at FS. He had 72 tackles, 33 assists, 1 sack, 6 PDs and a 78 PD%. He was a solid contributor last season.

Overall, we hate to see these guys go. They came here in 2034 hoping to see a culture change and make a difference. Unfortunately, their retirements won't allow them to be a part of the changes we are trying to make. We wish them well in their new careers outside of football.

      Coaching Staff

The way the team got away from the staff at the end of last season was the determining factor in our decision to make some changes. We are hoping the new staff will bring in a fresh, positive attitude and help to turn this team around.

      Head Coach:
Out: Jimmy Bates. Decent HC, but with two issues. First, as we said, he let the team get away from him, and morale was terrible at the end of the season. Second, we are hoping to get younger in the coming seasons, and Jimmy is just not a strong development type coach.

In: Jerome Raymond. Assistant Coach at Denver for 2 years, he's got some good experience and he's still young (39 years old) and developing, just like we hope our team will develop. He's got good Motivation and Discipline, which we hope will help revamp the culture here in South Maryland. He is good with player development and interviewing, and solid at scouting. Overall, our hope is that Raymond will bring a new attitude and culture, and that we'll see hard work through the entire season.

      Offensive Coordinator:
In: Oliver Shepherd. He is promoted from Assistant Coach to OC. Shepherd was HC in Brooklyn for 3 seasons, collecting 3 straight winning seasons. He knows how to win, and we are happy he is here. We promote him because he has shown great playcalling ability, he's very smart and can help promote discipline. He should be decent with our young talent and developing them.

Out: Courtney Brand. While we think Courtney Brand is a talented young coach, he really lacks the motivational and disciplinarian aspects we feel we need in our coaching staff at this point. Simply, last year's ending really should not have been so bad, if only our coaching staff and been able to do something about it. With a good, disciplined team and a strong Head Coach, Brand can go far. We'd love to keep him, but he just doesn't fit into what we, as a team, need at this time.

      Defensive Coordinator:
In: Leland Wester. Coach Wester is exactly what we need right now to run the defense. Solid play caller and good disciplinarian. Smart, and is very, very good with the younger players we plan to bring into the defense in the coming years. Plus, he is much more knowledgeable with the 3-4 defense we want to run.

Out: Jay Boccaccio. Jay was a great play caller in the 4-3 defensive scheme, but at times he was not strong with the 3-4 that we moved to in the past year. He's also a great scout and was able to keep the defense disciplined and motivated even through the fallout last offseason. Unfortunately, we needed to find someone to work with the young players we hope to bring in, and teach them the 3-4 defense. This is not Jay's strong suit.

      Assistant Coach:
In: With the promotion of Coach Shepherd, we look to find a new Assistant. We hire Louie Schaffer, who will be very useful in developing our young players, and will also add to our scouting. He's been around for a long time, and we hope his experience will add to our staff.

      Strength Coordinator:
In: Corbin Dawson. Dawson is one of the smartest guys I've talked with. He also knows about conditioning, which should really help our team stay injury free and also keep up their stamina through the end of the season.

Out: Martin Cason is a younger guy still learning the business. He's not bad, just doesn't have the intelligence and knowledge we are looking for.

With our coaching staff in place, let's move on to the offseason and building our team.

We start out with a couple of big trades. Memphis' new ownership find themselves in financial straits, and we find some opportunities, to help them and ourselves.

We trade our 3rd round pick for WR Jon Brady, who was the 1.2 pick in 2025. We feel he will be a great complement to WR Floyd Mallory and should really help the younger receivers on the team learn how to be a professional. We hope he can steady the locker room and make an impact there as well.

We also sign J. B. Jennings to a 4 year deal, then trade him to Memphis for veteran RB Javon Doelle. Doelle is 28 and hopefully has a few more good years in him. He's still quick, can find holes, and is a very powerful runner. I think he'll help our running game, and also should be a big boost to our 3rd down conversion %.

With these two trades, our offense immediately improves. We have an impressive RB, two good WRs (now teams can't focus on taking Mallory out of the game by double and triple covering him), and a solid QB in David White (if he can play the way he played the first 11 games of 2034).

          Resignings:

TE Geoff Loukas. 4th year, RFA signed to a 3 year, $9M deal. Former 2.32 pick Loukas is a very good run blocker who should really help in the running game. In his 3 years with the Maulers, he has caught 63 of 93 targets for 564 yards. He also has 9 KRB and 1 pancake.

OLB Toby Michalske. A former 6th round pick, we were able to sign him to a 3 year, $7.5M deal. Michalske really took to the 3-4 defense, recording 9.5 sacks in 10 starts at WLB, replacing injured rookie Levi Costa. This year we'll move him to WLB and he'll backup Costa. If Costa continues to be injury prone, Michalske has shown he can do the job.

SS Matt Fellin. We are very thin in the secondary, and Fellin has some good size and is a solid ST contributor. So we signed him for another year at $1.32M. If he continues to contribute on ST, he will probably be resigned and will continue to keep his roster spot.

          Released:

WR Tyrone Bensen. 7th year player, he is a good route runner, but as a backup (now that we have Brady) he doesn't offer any help to our very weak special teams group. So, rather than keeping him around, we save $4M by letting him find another team.

          Other:

Two guys we are considering for resigning are FB Maurice Bartrum and WR Mercury Rasmussen.

Bartrum is an RFA FB who we've made an offer to but he turned it down. He and Doelle have exceptional affinity, so he will probably get a second offer. Best case scenario for us is a trade offer for him. We'd love to sign and trade him, because we think we can do better for what we want at FB.

Rasmussen is also an RFA that we really like due to his high GD and 53 BP bars. He turned down our first offer, and we are considering other roster options at WR at this time. Again, this is a guy we'd be very happy to sign and trade. In all likelihood, we'll sign him and trade or release one of the younger WRs on the team. He's just too good to let go.

              Not a very interesting FA.

We resign RB Levon Doelle to a 3 year, $36M deal to insure he finishes his career as an effective RB with us.

We signed 2nd year CB to a 2 year, $2.2M deal. We like his potential in coverage and Special Teams. We hope to give him playing time this season to develop and see where he is compared to his potential.

Also, focusing on special teams, we sign punter Patrick Schwartz to a 3 year, $18M deal. This should improve our overall field position and special teams play a bit.

Before the draft begins, we get a message from the city council telling us they have rejected our bid for a new stadium. This will allow us the opportunity to move the team out of South Maryland and to a place we feel is better suited to having a football team.

Now, let's look at our draft.

1.6 - WR Ike Baker. Initial Rating: 33/66. What is not to like about him? 4.39 40 and 6.89 Agility combines, plus the 57 Position Drill... His potential is very high. We needed a receiver to take some pressure off Mallory, and he's going to be the guy to do it. Our only worry with him is his endurance, which may keep him from being on the field as much as we'd like.

2.6 - S Everett Hernandez. We move him to CB. Initial Rating at CB: 32/54. Hernandez was the best player available, and we had him rated as a mid 1st round pick. Since he was still available in the 2nd, it was an easy choice to grab him. We think Hernandez translates better to CB in our system, so we move him there and hope he can be as good as we think he can. Time will tell.

4.6 - C Gerald Hirschman. Initial Rating: 14/57. Our current starting C is 33, and we thought it would be a great time to try to find a guy to be the future starting center for the team. We believe Hirschman could be the guy. He's not the strongest guy, but he's smart and a good blocker, both pass and run. He has all the natural skills needed, we'll try to help him build up his strength and endurance in the workout room this training camp.

5.6 - CB Brady Stephenson. We really had no need for a CB, nor does Stephenson really fit what we do on defense, so we'll release him before training camp to give him the opportunity to find other employment.

6.6 - TE Michael Lyon. Initial Rating: 20/37. We like his run blocking bars, plus his GD and BP, and the combines to match them. We hope he can be a good receiving TE with some solid run blocking. It's unlikely he will become a starter, but he should be a solid backup for us.

7.6 - OLB Earnest Stelmack. Initial Rating 22/40. We were considering him at 6.6, so when he was still available at 7.6 we were very happy to grab him. He looks like he can be a good coverage LB, which is a job where we need a few players. We hope he can develop into a very good coverage LB. We'll give him an opportunity to fight for the starting job at SLB.

7.32 - LS Damien Spencer. We trade a future 7th for the last pick in the draft, looking to pick up Spencer and lock up a roster spot for a long time. Spencer looks to be a very good long snapper. We hope he lasts 10-12 years with the team.

Overall, we are pretty happy with our draft. We got some guys who can be possible starters in the later rounds, and our first two picks, we hope, should be quality, successful starters for many years. With a good 5th round pick, I'd rate our draft an A. However, the wasted 5th round pick will make this draft a B+.
