Memphis: Dismal Year, But What Have We Learned?

    • 2034 Attendance is up to 70,900 ticket buyers. That's up from 34,700 the season before.
    • Memphis is still the sixth winningest franchise in OSFL history. We sit six games behind Dakota.
    • Rookie QB Deshonee Harden isn't the long term answer at quarterback. The rookie finished the season starting four games and finished with a qb rating of 44.2. and threw eight interceptions to one touchdown pass.
    • Nine year qb Walt Johnson may not be our answer at signal caller, either. Johnson's irritatingly long ankle injury wound up benching him and when he did play the first 12 games, he finished with a qb rating of 65.4. and threw twenty interceptions.
    • Our pass defense is outstanding. We led the league in completions at 16.8 per game; passing yards at 170.8 per game; 5.44 yards per attempt; 10.16 yards per catch; total yardage gained at 285.0; and second in completion percentage at 53.6.
    • Our run defense isn't outstanding and ranks near the bottom.
    • Team Cohesion is solid in Passing, Defensive Front, and Secondary. All three falling in the 80's. Offensive Line cohesion isn't solid at 62.
    • Offensive coordinator Louie Shaffer's 14 year stint in Memphis will be coming to an end.
    • We should make more money than the $40 Million loss last season.

So, Where Do We Go From Here?

    • Memphis may be rebranding. Something about the way the Memphis Southmen sounds is ringing my bell, and it's historical.
    • We need linebackers on defense, and offensive guards on offense.
    • A nice rookie franchise quarterback would be cool, too.

    Hoosier's Overview:

Disappointing season comes to an end and with it a new era begins. I'd like to remake us as smashmouth run first with a ball control offense and a slobber knocker defense.

I'd like to say we're close, but...we're not.

    1. Sad to say, but we didn't place one player on either the first or second team OSFL All Star Squads.
    2. But, attendance is up 104% since last season and we made $45.29 M profit last season. Damn, but that's good.

Profit = better slot in coaches draft = better playing team

And we're in danger of losing a third round pick because we're over the cap by a ton.

AI put the screws to the financials on this squad. Trades or dramatic cuts of aged veterans impending.

For many years, the Showboats were a mainstay in the OSFL. But, they were in Ohio Valley when the league was founded.

Memphis on the other hand were the Admirals. And for some reason, I could never figure out why Admirals were grounded in Memphis. Sure, there is a river nearby, but...Admirals? Being what it is, the Memphis Admirals were also one of the founding franchises back when the OSFL kicked off.

And then there's the era of the Mustangs. And for some reason, it doesn't click with me.

So, we're coming full circle. Kind of. Memphis are now Showboats, adopting the original Ohio Valley nickname and grounding us back in the league's beginning days.

New ingame graphic, with new helmet coming soon.

Showboats Stop Treading Water: Changes In Coaching Ranks!

O.J. O'Donnell has been fired as Memphis' assistant coach. O'Donnell's play calling ability and discipline among the players were called into question last season when Memphis finished six and ten overall. G.M. Hoosier Owens has also fired sixty six year old offensive coordinator Louie Schaffer, a 28 year veteran of the OSFL wars, 27 of which were at Memphis. "We needed better motivation, better discipline, and someone better interviewing the rookies." Schaffer was quickly picked up by the Chicago Reapers.

Memphis has dipped into the college coaching ranks and hired Alabama's defensive coordinator to fill the position vacated by O'Donnell's sudden departure. "Coach Marquez gives us better balance in the coaching areas we're concerned about, and we're happy to have him on board." G.M. Owens. Marquez has never coached in the pros, but is well known for producing outstanding linebackers.

Showboats have hired the former head coach at Las Vegas, Cornelius Hardy, as the new offensive coordinator. Hardy brings a solid reputation with running backs into the Memphis staff.

              Memphis Showboats 2035 Rookie Draft

1.7. CB Conner "Oh" Cannida, Oregon State Beavers
              Very High Volatility
              Fits In
              Interviewed: UNDERRATED!

Our current left cornerback, nine year pro J.J. Browning is nearing the end of his career, and let's face it, with a Run Defense bar of zero and Endurance bar of 34, he's better suited as a nickle or dime back, not a starter.

Enter Cannida. The kid has everything I like in a corner, and he's a very strong Specials contributor.

He and Nicky Duffy, our second year right corner, looks like a very solid tandem for years to come.

              Hoosier's Thoughts:

"Defensive gameplanning has always been a focus for me, and in this game the defensive backs are key. This kid was underrated and I think he gives us a damn fine left corner after he converts."

2.11. LB Ted Shiel, Cal Golden Bears
                5-11, 231 lbs.
                Very High Volatility
                Affinity

"We're hoping Shiel is our Gary Brackett." GM Hoosier Owens

What Sheil is ...well, he's fast and agile. Superior Combine Scores in Dash and Agility caught our eye, and the other combines are spot on.

Bar wise indicates a run Stopper with great Run Defense, Average to Good Punishing Hitter, Endurance, and Specials bars.

                But, he is underweight.

He may end up a good run defender, but I can't get behind what looks to be a subpar ability to defend against the pass.

Good pass rush technique, and looks to be near average on Bump n Run, and I play a lot of bump n run.

But I wanted a run stopper at the MLB slot. I'll blitz the SLB and WLB.

3.6. LG Clyde "The Glyde" Sullivan, Houston Cougars
                      6-4, 305 lbs.
                      Fits In
                      High Volatility

Sullivan already lands on the OSFL's Strongest Man List, and looks to be a solid offensive guard. We don't have a left guard, so he'll start from day one.

He's a tad bit underweight, but conditioning can help. When he hits his prime, he'll be good, he's just got to play his way to greatness.

3.10. OT Reggie Williamson, New Mexico Lobos
                        6-5, 325 lbs (ovrwt)
                        Very High Volatility

We go from brute strength with the rookie guard, to finesse blocking with the tall tackle from New Mexico.

Combine scores look average, except Solevision, which may not be a factor for o line.

His bars indicate a better pass blocker with little to no blocking strength.

We needed a tackle, and he's it.

Our veteran center is in his 12th season. We need a backup/heir apparent, and I like the his bars.

Combines are average in everything but Agility and Broadjump.

                          We'll take him.
