While this franchise has gone through a solid turnaround, and even captured a title, they have fallen shy of the playoffs two years running now. 9-7 will be viewed as a failed season, especially if it means another December closing time.

    OFFENSE

The good news is the Bombers are returning 10 starters... the bad news is the one change will be at QB. Or maybe it's good news. J.T. Eisenbart has played just well enough to miss the playoffs, with his inexplicable streaks of throwing 2-3-4 INTs in a season. Last season alone, he had 4 games with 3 INTs - a 1-3 record. He also took a steep drop in TC, all but cementing his role as (capable) backup and mentor.

So who starts? The team seems committed to giving Hardy Campana every chance to take the spot. Some see more to him than the surface, so here's hoping where there's smoke, there's fire. Austin Austin, the big dumb Texan, will be lucky to see a snap beyond pre-season.

A.J. McGee looks strong as ever, and is behind a very cohesive and talented O-Line. He was hindered by injuries for the start of the season, and is looking to dominate from the start this year.

As long as Campana (or whomever) can stay upright, they have a good bunch to throw to. Wooden-Webb-Corbett will stretch it long, with Rogers and McGee cleaning up underneath. There's not a bad target to be had.

    DEFENSE

There's an experiment going on in the preseason, as Washington will take a strong look at the 3-4 this season. Draftees J.T. Bromell and Wesley 'Daywalker' Blades are making this possible as SLB and WILB, respectively. Most interestingly, All-World LB Brandon Sponable will be unleashed as a rush-backer. Should be fun. Unless you're the QB.

Junior Bullock is showing his age a little, but still key - especially in the 3-4. He and Gary Grabulis will have more responsibility, but they both look more than up for it. RDE will be mostly Pete Lundgren, with rookie Randy Staiger coming in for even more pass-rush.

Nate Graham had an outstanding season last year - right up to the last month. No idea why. Maybe small sample size, maybe there's a 'wall' to hit. In any event, he's not exactly a concern. He and Stone are back for their 4th season together, along with Pittard and Cote. The safeties don't strike fear in anyone, but it should be a very cohesive unit overall.

    SCHEDULE

This season can go either way in a hurry this year. Right off the bat, the Bombers take on the thorn in their side, Portland. That's followed by a 4-game home stand with a bye in the middle. Washington must get off to a fast start, because conversely, five of their last six are on the road. As mentioned, anything less than 10-6 and a playoff spot will be viewed as a failure. The talent is there, apart from the huge glowing question mark at QB.

    PRESEASON 1 -

The 3-4 was a resounding success in its debut, specifically Brandon Sponable - 3 sacks, 1 block, 1 hurry, 2 knockdowns, a forced fumble and an INT. Throw in 2.5 sacks from Junior Bullock, 158 yards allowed, 2/12 on 3rd downs... yeah, we're keeping it. :D

Offensive was a mixed bag. A.J. McGee was a monster, 35 carries for 188 yards, 2 TDs, 3 catches for 23 yards, 5 first downs... but QB play was (predictably) unimpressive. Hardy Campana was a measly 7/17. But, buried in that, is a tidy 5/8 on third downs. His 0/3 in the red zone was an issue, as was AA's 0/4.

All in all, the Bombers settled for field goals 6 times, four of those in the red zone. While it was a nice workout for Hunter Bauer, it's not what we want to see in the regular season.

Plenty to learn and fix here, but overall, it was a very strong debut.

It's like deja vu all over again. 32-3 last game, 33-3 this. Defense is still opportunistic as hell (4 turnovers), McGee is great, Bauer is overworked, Campana was 5/7 on 3rd downs... but again, the offense died in the red zone (3 FGs inside the 20). Nothing really to complain about though. :)

            30-15. We're slipping. :D

I hate getting over-enthusiastic about preseason, but wow. This was 30-7 and all but over when we gave up a garbage TD at the end. We've averaged just over 31-7 in the preseason so far.

As with the other games, it wasn't really the offense pouring on the points. It was the defense taking the ball away and setting us up in great field position. Average drive starts in these three games - OWN 42, OWN 42, OWN 35. We've started on the other side of the field 13 times.

And we STILL suck in the redzone. :/ 15 visits, 5 TDs, 10 FGs.

The offense is still a bit of a liability as our QBs (hopefully) find their way. On the positive side, though, only one INT in three games. We will be very hard to beat if we can win the turnover battle, especially at the 3:1 ratio we're doing in the preseason.

My starting QB and RB were on sidelines, btw. So, yeah, preseason is a PITA to determine anything from. Especially considering my first two games were fairly dominant until I ran into the wall known as Washington. ;)

Yup. I could win 50-0 in game four, but if I lose that first game to Portland... :(

                  PRESEASON 4

                  Austin Austin lost in Boston.

Kid looked lights-out in the first half, but familiars kicked in hard in the 2nd. Gonna happen when he only knows 7. Big dummy. But liked what I saw in the 1st half. If he can learn some more, still has a shot next year.

                    Final thoughts...

Austin Austin did not embarass himself. He was 15/20 for about 200 yards and a TD to start the game, then was 4/16 after that, mostly due to familiars. He's not going to see much time this year, but haven't given up entirely.

I have to hope that McGee holds up all season, because there's not much behind him.

Contrary to my initial comments, I really don't want to run him 400+ times. We have enough balance that it shouldn't have to be a run-first and run-only offense. Campana will have training wheels, but he won't be entirely restricted.

As with last year, I really do want to exploit the 3-4 quality WRs I have + Harold Rogers. Should be mismatches all over the place.

I have no concerns about the OL at all, especially once SchaPLOWsky returns in Week 2-3.

Ditto with the DL. Lundgren's not a star at RDE, but he's never been a liability either. It's still Bullock, Grabulis, and Sponable tearing stuff up around him.

I like rookie Wesley Blades. At least enough for WILB duty. Probably never sees 40, but his bars are in the right place.

I wish I could've addressed the safety position more in FA or the draft, but just didn't find anything. There's decent talent in there, but mostly relying on cohesion for any effectiveness.

File is uploaded, good luck to everyone except Portland. :D
