When a team goes 5-11 the preceding season you'd expect them to make some major moves coming into the next season. Not so with the Maniacs. While their 2020 record reflects poorly on the talent level and coaching of their team, ownership and management felt that their fairly aggressive moves in the 2020 draft added much needed talent to the valuable WR and CB positions. Coming into 2021 not having a first round pick, Morgantown knew they'd have to be smart with their free agent and draft choices.
Perhaps the biggest move this off season for Morgantown was the trade of perennial pass rushing monster Carlton Ellis. Morgantown received two 3rd round picks in compensation and believe that the talent picked up from those picks will help them for a long time coming.
Not willing to overpay for free agents, Morgantown continues to look to the draft for future success. Management wasn't thrilled with the depth of this draft based on their specific needs. BPA was employed this draft and the results so far are fairly positive as all picks are expected to make and contribute to the team this season.
2.6 - DE Tom McElroy: 45/74 - 49/72 (4/-2) After being ranked 11th overall in the draft, McElroy fell to the 38th selection on rumors of his inability to stay on the field for long periods of time. Training camp shows this is true, but Morgantown believes that his skill far outweighs this knock and McElroy is expected to start for the departed Ellis at LDE.
3.7 - K Rob Krieger: 47/83 - 49/82 (2/-1) While not the best kicker in the draft, Morgantown was happy to be able to select Krieger with their second pick in the draft. Coaches believe that numerous games were lost in 2020 due to mediocre Special Teams play and Krieger is expected to help with the field position battle for the foreseeable future.
3.7 - T Harvey Tuten: 25/56 - 31/55 (6/-1) Morgantown was not able to retain the services of all around good backup G Henry Reiner in free agency, so Tuten was selected to be moved inside and solidify the backup role. Tuten has good physical skills, but has problems staying on the field. Perfect for a backup role on the O-line.
4.6 - LB Wayne Poe: 21/45 - 25/42 (4/-3) LB Poe was selected specifically to add coverage and special team skills to Morgantown. While his training camp wasn't as positive as many of the other draft choices, Morgantown is still happy with his ability to backup the veteran players and have a presence on the special teams unit.
6.6 - DT Julio Bruton: 16/42 - 20/45 (4/3) Starting nose tackle, not backup NT, is a need for the team, but in the sixth round Morgantown took a flier on the run stopping DT Bruton. He came into training camp more raw than expected, but with what he showed on the practice field it is expected that Bruton will make the team as a backup. He may not see significant playing time until 2022, but that's acceptable for a sixth round pick.
7.7 - G Raymond Benner: 25/47 - 28/46 (3/-1) With the selection of Benner, Morgantown continues it's string of good value picks in the lower rounds. Benner was projected as a backup and his camp continues to project him at that position though it is expected he will remain with the team for a long time to come.
