2.12 - CB Bill Stuart - PC: 17/40
We had liked Stuart enough to give him a lower first round grade, but when we saw the depth remaining at our pick, we decided dealing down would allow us to improve our situation in the future and get better value for our draft dollar. Stuart, if he develops, will be a starter within a year. If he looks good enough in camp, he will see the field regularly from day one.
2.31 - S Edwin Bonds - PC: 18/36
We thought Bonds was flying a bit under the radar as the draft went along, but weren't sure he would make it to the end of the 3rd round, so we chose him over RB Kelly Coffey. We had more of a need at S, otherwise Coffey would have likely been in Yuma. We think Bonds has a higher ceiling than his initial look would indicate, but camp will tell the tale. He is practically guaranteed to get some PT in a secondary that is still looking for the best answers at nearly every position.
3.31 - TE Bruce Poland - PC: 20/26
Poland is quick and strong as an ox, so we hope that translates to solid run blocking and the ability to take some of the load off Mike Smithson as he ages. Poland might not see the field for 2 or 3 seasons until he develops enough to overcome our other 2 TEs on the depth chart. If he shows more development than expected, he may just be our 2nd TE until Smithson rides into the sunset.
4.31 - ILB Tito Quick - PC: 13/47
Quick is an immediate replacement for recently departed Larry Barrett, who was just signed to a new deal but was traded anyway when a high value offer was made for him. Quick has just that, quickness. Hes not super fast, but he looks like the kind of guy who can play the goalline and base defenses for us right out of the gate.
5.31 - RB Dennis Drake - PC: 27/35
We decided to finally go for a backup candidate at RB in round 5 and Drake was a guy our scout told us about. He looks like he might be one of those home run hitter types, but will probably see the field very little unless an injury occurs. He does have the potential to be more than just a practice squad guy though.
6.31 - G Burt Newhart - PC: 19/46
Newhart didn't attend the combine, but impressed our scout in our individual workout with him. He fills the remaining opening at G on our offensive line, and should be a solid backup who has a chance to blossom into a starter down the road.
7.31 - QB A.J. Brentley - PC: 7/20
Took a flyer on this guy late, he's an ASU product who we wanted to give a shot to. He is pro ready with 13 formations known already, but does he have the talent to make it in the pro game?
