  • Bombers Draft

We were in a very lucky spot this draft, with basically all of our starters for the season already in place. So it was very much a 'BPA' type of draft. If there would've been a stud S available at 1.21, that's about the only thing I would've changed.

1.21 - QB Hardy Campana - Tom Skeen is gone, J.T. Eisenbart is too prone to turnovers, so enter workout-wonder Hardy Campana. Best Sole (and only average INT), strongest arm, best agility. Bars are not real pretty, so just going pretty completely on what we saw at the combine. If he creeps/booms, he will start.

2.21 - OT Tony Holmes - Big and strong, good combines and bars. Don't know if he's special, but he'll certainly contribute.

3.21 - RB Nick Mayberry - Hm, not sure what I saw here, feels like a big reach. Looks like a sure -7 in camp.

4.2 - DT Mel Browning - This one, on the other hand, feels like a pretty good grab for a fourth. Again, don't think he's a superstar, but good backup and sometime starter.

4.21 - QB Julio Roaf - Nice camp, decent bars, 5% developed. Long-term project, doubt he's more than a 3rd-string for the foreseeable future.

5.21 - OLB Mack Sevcik - Doesn't look too bad. If his PRS & PRT hold, may consider a 3-4.

6.21 - S Harris Kabinoff - Didn't get a safety in the first, but I really like Kabinoff in the 6th. Not the answer as a starter, but great looking role player and ST expert.

7.21 - WR Jimmy Shell - Solid camp and 8% developed, I like this one.

Quite honestly, other than Nick Mayberry, I feel like I got good value at every pick. May not even be a starter in the bunch, but looks like some quality depth and potentially a starter or three.

You already know I love me some Campana...Sevcik and Kabinoff were guys I had kept my eye on for a while. A different year, and I might've tried to take them earlier. Kabinoff was probably my favorite safety prospect back there.

One thing Mayberry might give you is a return man, but I generally agree with your assessment of him.

Campana was mine at 1.31 if he fell.. I think he is the best QB in this draft, but the question now is how good will he be?

As I look at your picks, I notice you went for all volatility guys until Sevcik, who looks like a solid rush LB for a 3-4.

Kabinoff is intriguing. I would almost bet he comes out nearly identical to what his bars show and yeah, a damn fine special teams guy, which is always nice to get in late rounds.

Man you went way down the list for Shell, but it looks like a decent grab for a 7th.. Interesting that he was drafted last year as well.

Oh, was he? I just checked my changetracker file. He obviously wasn't signed, but Shell went 12/24->11/21 while holding out from Las Vegas camp. I think it doesn't mean too much, though, right - he gets a whole new crack at it as a rookie this year in camp.

That would be an interesting experiment to run in SP. Draft a guy for a few years in a row without signing him and see if he does differently after training camp.
