Billy Joe Herndon, you're too young/my LBs suck too much for you to retire!

Three of the most famous Phantom's in Portland football history retired today.

Lance Clayton - LT
This is the one that hurts the most. Clayton was the franchise's first pick in the inaugural draft. Now, 145 games later, Clayton is calling it quits. Not only was he a Pro Bowler, he also helped mentor #1 overall pick Orlando Bell into one of the most dominant tackles in the game. Clayton was actually headed towards Free-Agency and likely would have been franchise tagged by the Phantoms. According to the position rater, he is the 15th best tackle of All-Time. He is #1 to Portland fans, however.

John Chart - RB
After a couple seasons of lackluster performances by their RBs, the Phantoms traded a 2nd round pick for Chart back in 2012. He rewared them with three years right around 1,000 yards, 4.0 ypc, and 20 total touchdowns. After 48 straight starts, this year, he came off the bench. 520 yards, four touchdowns and a 4.4 ypc. He retires as the franchise leader in rushing yards (3,602) and rushing TDs (22), as well as other rushing records.

Stephen Stephenson - LB/ST
Not only does he have one of the best names in OSFL history, he was a fan favorite. Undersized as an OLB (5'11 225), Stephenson was an eight-year starter after being drafted in the 12th round of the inaugural draft. The past three years he was a special teams monster, one of the best tacklers in the league.

Not sad to see John Chart retire as he tortured us for years.

I'm surprised more of our older players did not retire after getting a ring.

We ended up losing DE Antoine Collins, who we signed as a FA last year to help with our depleted D-Line. It turned out that he would get benched for the two rookie DE's by the time we started to play for the future. Little did we know that we would go on a tear from that point forward.

CB Brett Atkins retired after being nothing more than a nickel/dime back for the past 4 seasons which he spent in Anchorage.

Aw, man, was hoping Boren would return for one more season. Drat.

Hell of a stat line to go out on. His last game -

3.5 sacks, 1 block, 2 hurries, 7 knockdowns.

Those three and a half sacks - in his very last game - were enough to put him at 101 for his career, the first OSFL'er to top 100 sacks. He ends his career at

#1 in sacks
#2 in blocks
#1 in hurries
#1 in knockdowns
#2 in tackles by a DE

His numbers will be surpassed, but right now - best DE ever. Salut.

Ouch that's what happens when you have an old team. Not only does our Defensive Coordinator retire, but so do four key starters and three of our five position leaders.

WR Eric Flemming

Flemming was Camden's all time leading receiver. Even with his greatly reduced production in the last few years (as a result of my run-first offense) he still retires #9 all time in receiving yards and #5 all time in Avg/target. And while I may be able to replace his production on the field, Flemming was also my receiver position leader and had affinities with a boat load of other players.

CB Sean Peterson

2015 Legend of the Game. Peterson started 155 games for us a corner over the last 10 years, but that was only small part of his contribution to our team. He was versatile and dangerous return man, finishing his career as the game's #5 all time leader in punt return yards and #3 all time in kick return yards. His 11,924 total return yards are the most in league history.

OG Neil Lane

What was the first thing I did when I took over the team? I went out and got the best guard available. Then I got another one, and then I got a center, and then I won the Stevens Cup. Lane was the first step in the retooling of our offensive line so that I could run my grinding offense.

LB Riddick Melton

My big free agent acquisition last year. Melton didn't have a chance to do much for us in his one season in Camden, but before he got here he was a 5 time Pro Bowler, 2 time All Pro and retired #5 all time in tackles.

Also retiring were OG Jerry Gindin, CB Randal Maddox. Neither saw much action on the field, but they played their roles in the locker room. Both were key position leaders and mentors.
