  • New Renegotiation Rule

Interested to get the league's thoughts on this:

Mitchell Joiner- Starting QB for Las Vegas:

    <table style="border-collapse: collapse;" border="1" bordercolor="#c71d22" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="10%"><center>2011</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="20%"><center>Las Vegas</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="20%"><center>Amateur Draft</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="50%"><center>Selected with the 1(9) pick by Las Vegas</center></td> </tr><tr><td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="10%"><center>2011</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="20%"><center>Las Vegas</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="20%"><center>Late FA1</center></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" width="50%"><center>Signed his rookie contract: 6yrs, $27,710,000.</center></td> </tr></tbody></table><center><table style="border-collapse: collapse;" bgcolor="#959297" border="0" bordercolor="#c71d22" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td><center>2012</center></td></tr></tbody></table></center><table style="border-collapse: collapse;" border="1" bordercolor="#c71d22" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td bgcolor="#e7e7e7" width="10%"><center>2012</center></td> <td bgcolor="#e7e7e7" width="20%"><center>Las Vegas</center></td> <td bgcolor="#e7e7e7" width="20%"><center>Week 14</center></td> <td bgcolor="#e7e7e7" width="50%"><center>Signed a renegotiated contract: 5yrs, $9,660,000.</center></td></tr></tbody></table>

Now Mitchell was the #1 pick for Vegas in '11 and is their starting QB in 12. He was making about 4 mil year from his rookie contract but for some reason agrees to a renegotiated deal for a little over 1 mil a year? This thread isnt meant to call Pretend_GM out because what he did was within the rules (I would have done the same thing) but should we start to look into revising the renegotiation rules.

Ive seen a few other examples of deals like this throughout the league and it appears to be very unrealistic almost to the point of being a glitch. Interested to hear your thoughts.

    Wow.

That doesn't seem right but what kind of rules do you think would work? Maybe you can only renegotiate in the last two years of a contract? That seems a little unrealistic when it comes to working with the cap though.

I like the FOFL rule of only being able to renegotiate in the final year, but I would be in favor of an option for the last 2 years as well.

Last year or two years seems reasonable to me. Kinda like the BLB...offer $5 mil for 3 years and then make the 4th year an option for $10 mil. It's not against the rules but it's sneaky.

renegotiations only in the last year works for me.

Im not in favor of house rules. My thought process is that we all work under the same set of rules from the game. We all can do it. Yeah it looks unrealistic, but its how the game works.

I'm strongly in favor of re-negotiations only in the last year. Otherwise, you get unrealistic deals like the one above.

I'm leaning toward only doing renegs during the last year of a contract but im waiting to hear from more owners. So far the response has ben overwhelmingly in favor of the rule.

I don't care how we do it.

Just let me know and I'll go with whatever the league chooses.

This post misrepresents the facts of the situation. The important numbers are the cap hits each year:

                              2012 don't know
                              2013 3.90 mil.
                              2014 4.26
                              2015 4.67
                              2016 4.91

You have to remember that the initial bonus money of the 2011 contract has to be amortized over the life of the contract. The cap hit per season is approximately the same for the 2011 contract as it is for the 2012 renegotiated contract.

The renegotiation is typical of star players and happens all the time in FOF. They're willing to give up future increases in salary in return for more bonus money upfront. There is no reason to change any rules based on this renegotiation.
