  • Rate Your Draft

For the first time ever in the OSFL, I'm giving myself an A for drafting and here's why:

    Pick #103-Chris Gaines(FB), UMass
    40/75
-I love this pick there were a lot of great fullbacks in this draft and I think I snagged one of them. Chris is a complete fullback in the fact that he can run, block, catch, and even perform on special teams. He is a great pick to solidify our anemic offense in North Liberty.

    Pick #77-Bert Dalan(C), Illinois
    35/68
-Now that I think about it, this was a great draft. There were also a lot of good centers, and Dalan is right up there with the best of them. He's another good prospect out of the University of Illinois(so is Bronson), so I can't wait to see how he progresses.

    Pick #217 Bart Hetrick(DT), BYU
    19/61

-Hetrick is big man. 6'6, 319 lbs, he's going to a nice addition to the middle, pairing up with budding star, defensive tackle Ken Ursino. I couldn't believe he fell this far in the 7th round, and although he may not become a star, I think he will become a seviceable backup at worst.

    Pick #139 Billy Ellison(OLB), Florida

    19/60
-This little "tweener" out of Florida is a little on the small side for linebacker, but we draft on speed and ability, both of which this guy has. The last time we drafted an undersized linebacker we got Pro Bowl linebacker, Joel Wild. Ellison projects to be at worst a great nickel and dime backer, with the potential to do much more.

    Pick #15 Junior Bell(DT), Baylor

    35/59
-Junior Bell is another guy who caused havoc at the college level, despite playing undersized for his position. Bell will be immediately moved to the outside where he's projected to be a top ten player at the defensive end position. Bell said he is looking forward to terrorizing quarterbacks, especially those named Parrish.

Pick #222 Trent Nixon(T), Nicholls State

    19/51
-Trent Nixon was a need pick for us. If there is any point of improvement other than wide reciever, we can make for our offense it would be at right tackle. His volatilty shows that he may not be much more than a backup but if he can stay in the league for a while as a late 7th round pick, I'm sure he'd be happy.

    Pick #214 Korey Wiggins(WR), Tulane

    22/51
    -
Definetely not an answer to our problems at wide reciever, but hopefully he will give Allen a reliable 3rd down option.

    Pick #207 Earnest Mincey(CB), Georgia

    19/42
-Mincey's size will likely force me to move him to safety and may be a heir to safety, Adrian Burhart.

I am very happy with my draft. After pissing away last season I put a lot of work into the utility and am happy with all my computer picks via my list.

    1.14 LDE Mark Fisk, 19/69
    1.31 OG Fred Richey, 28/74
2.13 RB Nigel Clark, 50/57 - Will be starting from Day 1
    3.12 FS Pete Lucas, 27/62
    4.11 OG Chuck Coles, 24/62
    5.10 SLB Freddie Banks, 24/54
    6.15 DT Joe Pearson, 22/52

I'm not sure how everyone will pan out but it's some much needed depth at key positions.

      A. I love my draft.

1.6 DE Junior Bullock: 41/86. Future beast.
2.6 TE Harold Rogers: 41/72. Legit threat, who will spread out the defense well.
3.6 RT Casey Schaplowsky: 17/56. Could take awhile to develop, but he looks like he can be a good tackle.
4.6 C Howie Foreman: 29/71. Will replace Norm Cundiff and hopefully be just as good.
5.6 SLB Ron Walker: 23/49. Adds decent depth to my group of LBs.
6.6 RCB Warren Gunn: 23/53. Should add depth to my secondary.
7.6 RB Melvin Massengill: 24/52. Good change of pace back with Randy Richardson, and is a good receiver out the backfield.

2-22--WR RJ Clark- 13/47. Im hoping he develops quick. He will probably start opposite Slade. I chose him for his low route running. Dont want to steal throws from "The Man".

5-22--DT Roy Compton- 23/62. He was a BPA pick. Didnt necessarily need a DT but did need a D Lineman. With a good TC, he will take Wansleys spot.

I grade this a B, for players picked. For future help a D for lack of players.

A year after winning it all with someone else's team I am now putting my stamp on this team with a sub-standard draft

In all serious I have no idea what to give this draft. On paper it looks good but I expect some drops post-training camp. The main goal was find a back to rotate with Ernie Tsang this year (after Heflin retired). Hopefully either El Nino or Pike stays where they are (34/50's).

none of this matters until training camp but...

            1.2 WR Rico Lofton 32/67

This was quite a year for wide outs and Lofton impressed us the most in his combine. Hands are somehwhat a question, but Lofton is big, fast and strong and should impact every play he is on the field. Looking forward to a nice training camp.

            1.11 OLB Randal Uhl 15/29

Highest rated defensive player on my board, he'll start from day 1 and screams creeper like few others. Can't wait to see his training camp and if he can end up in the 70's or higher after a year or so. Combine FREAK. Runs a 4.40, and agility drill was 7.16. Some think I took him too high, but I need playmakers on D and he could be rookie of the year.

            2.1 QB Terry Fleming 16/49

Passed on Larry Shed in round 1 to take Uhl, but Fleming could be a solid starter. He'll get the starter role right away and if he doesnt work out, we'll have a low pick next year for another direction.

            3.3 S R.J. Wulfeck 27/40

Another Defensive creeper. Safety was acutally a strength for PC last year, but they were old and let to escape via FA. Wulfeck will start from day one and should have a strong training camp.

            3.24 LG Roger Bethea 20/65

Traded a 6th rounder to move a few picks to get Bethea. Really see nothing but upside here as Bethea's combine showed decent strength but good agility and speed. Offensive line could actualy be a strength for Port City next year if Bethea works out as expected.

            4.2 DT Nathan Campbell 24/41

Doesn't look like he can stop the run, but he has highly rated on my defensive player board and thrilled he could be grabbed in round 4. Pass rushing fool with great ability and good speed combines. He'll probablty start or come in on passing downs. If training camp comes back with increases, he'll move right into a 4-3 starting role.

            5.1 K Jerome Stokes 44/79

Actually more a bars than combine pick, although his combine isn't bad. I needed a kicker and Stokes looks solid.

            7.1 RB Vernon Houston 27/40

Second year in a row we've taken an RB thinking he could end up starting. Stupid. Houston has reasonable numbers in his combine, but expectations are realistic. Again, if this doesnt work out, we'll have a high 2nd rounder to take a RB (I refuse to take a RB in round 1).

Got one starter, but he's a FB, and maybe a future FS. Overall score, D+. That could improve if a couple of players turn out to be upward creepers. Last year's draft was much better (and five of them didn't even make the team).

              2:15 - FB Tom Church (43/81)
I was lucky that Gainesville chose Baskerville over Church at 2:10. Church had the best combined combine score of any player in this years draft. Baskerville will still be a pretty good player, but Church could be an great player. Of course, he's still just a fullback, and my team had other needs I could have addressed with my first pick in the draft, so I really can't go patting myself on the back too much here.

              3:14 - FS Kendrick Andersen (21/61)
The Andersen pick kind of worries me. I going to be needing to find some sort of replacement for Billy Joe Bontrager, and Andersen could fill the bill. But his potential is a bit higher than I expected it to be given his grade and combines which makes me think that 61 is going to be coming down with training camp.

              4:13 - RCB Trevor Blackwell (10/16)
Ouch. The only positive sign here, Trevor's high Broad Jump skill suggests good return abilities but his orange bars show next to none. So he might be masked down and could creep upwards. But from 10/16, that's a lot of creeping he'd need to do.

              5:05 - RDT Courtney Monroe (21/32)
I'm oddly optimistic about this pick. The reason? Last year I nabbed DE (moved from DT) Randy Bryant at 6:1. Bryant had the same grade, both were Very Underrated according to my scout, and they had very similar combine numbers. Bryant showed up to camp rated 20/31, but picked up 18 points of Potential in training camp and will be starting for me this year. Could lightning strike twice?

              5:12 - RCB Corey Baldwin (20/32)
I took Baldwin here as insurance in case Blackwell didn't pan out. Looks like I should have found some better insurance. Like Blackwell, Baldwin's Broad Jump score compared to his P/K Return bars suggest some masking may be going on, but also like Blackwell he'll have a lot of creeping he'd need to do in order to earn a spot in a crowded defensive backfield.

              6:11 - OLB Ike Yager (21/45)
My scout had Yager as Over Rated, and I'm expecting that 45 to drop with the first training camp. I'll sign him to a contract, if for no other reason than to watch it happen.

              7:10 - OLB Donald Ellison (9/22)
My scout had Ellison as Under Rated, and his combines were a bit better than the average for his grade, so... maybe? But man he really doesn't look like much right now.

1-31 (Traded) 8th year WR Bo Stuart (71/71) - Bo comes in and gives us our best depth and talent level at the WR position since the inception of the league. Last seasons acquisition of DT Roby almost put us over the top, and we're hoping this season Stuart succeeds in pushing us back to the pinnacle.

2-31 QB Burt Virola (16/52) - Don't know if he will pan out, but the scout was cool with him and his combines are pretty solid. He'll probably drop though, and I will have wasted a pretty high pick on a reach for our future savior.

3-31 WR Raymond Starks (21/44) - Heres one we're pretty sure about. Very very happy to see him at the bottom of round 3, and if it all works out, he'll likely have a long career in Yuma.

4-31 TE Toby Gilmore (33/46) - Our talent at TE was lacking coming into the offseason, so we picked up a solid FA and then grabbed Gilmore for insurance. Gilmore has the numbers of a productive receiver, may be our number 2 most of the season but has a chance to take the top spot.

5-31 SLB Rico Hammond (22/32)- Likely to move inside at some point, this was a pick that found us looking ahead with our fingers crossed. We're hoping for a solid roleplayer/ platoon starter after a couple years.

6-31 FB Kelvin Connell (30/46)- Not the strongest, but has some athletic ability and will serve his purpose with the limited way we use FBs. If he can show us some hands, he might have an outside shot at significant playing time this year.

7-31 CB Roger Briggs (20/36)- Not a turnover guy, but has enough combines and a high enough starting number to make us believe we made a good pick here. He could be a solid nickel/dime CB for a while.

After TC we'll see how this draft really looks, but for now, we're pleased.

I was gonna grab Church at 2-31 if he was there, then move him to RB.

First draft as the owner of the Grizzlies, so it may have been a "learning year" but I'm hoping some of these guys pan out...

1.9 QB Jose Bauer(23/54) - Was surprised, and pleased, he fell all the way to #9. He'll probably be thrown into the fire right away, as we only have him and 2nd year man Carlson on the roster as quartberacks, so Bauer will more than likely see the field from Day One.

2.9 DE Brandon Gray(28/49) - Will also, most likely, see the field from Day One. Could turn into a pretty decent pass-rusher and will hopefully grow into a solid all-around DE. Will, more than likely, never see many awards but we're just looking for a solid starter to help bolster our DL.

3.7 RT Chris Shepard(25/48) - Another rookie that will probably get the start from Day One, just to see how he pans out. May end up being the back-up RT for the year depending on how training camp goes. May not be an elite tackle ever in his life, but we're hoping he'll be solid enough.

4.19 LT Kevin Cloak(19/38) - Mistake pick. He'll add depth to the OL, but not much else in his career. Doesn't really do anything that well, and probably never will. Oh well.

5.8 K Carl Perriman(39/55) - Will be our starting kicker. Not the most powerful leg, but he should be very accurate.

5.18 RG Wade Dawkins(32/65) - Has the highest original potential of any of our draft picks and my scouts really loved him. However, he is rather small so hopefully he'll put on some weight and he could see a lot of playing time early on in his career. He has the ability to develop into an outstanding blocker, so hopefully this will be a name that we can build our OL around in the future.

7.9 WR Benjamin Gordon(17/24) - Was picked to return kicks, most likely. Other than that...he probably won't do anything in his career.

Overall...I'd probably give myself a C. However, if Bauer turns into a dependable quarterback and the OL prospects work out, we may have the starts of a solid offense being built.

I have to give myself a F, although for some reason FOF gave me an A-.

1.18 Desmond Covington - LT - 16/55 - Stupid, stupid pick. Low endurance. Small. My thought was to switch him to guard, which I am going to do. But I could have just taken the top guard in the draft Fred Richey. Covington will start at RG this season. Stupid pick.

2.21 Joe Fears - FB - 39/54 - I really wanted one of the other two top FBs. I thought one of them would be there but I was wrong and panic set in, so I took Fears. I need his run blocking to develop. He might be a decent runner I guess. Stupid pick.

4.09 Arnie McDonald - SLB - 26/45 - Took him simply for his run stopping ability. I think he was a decent value pick here.

Rest of the draft... a bunch of 15/23 bums.

I'd give this group a B. It looks like we whiffed on a few, but also might have some late gems.

1.28 - CB Lester Singleton (31/58). Good size and combine have us thinking Singleton will likely make the move to FS.

2.30 - MLB Ralph Delgado (20/64). We've been trying to fill this position for years now with little success. Have we finally found a starter???

3.29 - DT Xavier Jacox (22/40). We were desperate to trade this pick as we didn't have anybody on the board that we felt was deserving of this pick. We'll see what happens after TC with him.

4.28 (TRADED) - SS Ted Linquist (59/59). Linquist and Womer give us a solid veteran secondary to go with our up and coming young talent.

5.30 - RB Brad Shaw (27/34). A pick made by our scouting department (auto pick) which we are not very happy about. Shaw will need to boom to make the squad.

6.29 - K Ethan Williamson (46/65). A pick based on a slight need and soild bars. Hoping the late round flyer will pay off.

7.28 - SS Lance McConnell (26/52). Decent combine, high volatility and bars that we would love to see out of a 7th round pick. Lance has a great shot to make the team and maybe even land a spot on the active roster in a reserve role.

If we can get two starting safeties out of this draft, I will give it an A as we have not had a solid combo since Metz and Robinson retired.

                              I can dig it:

1.24 - MLB Lester Ponder = 32/74 - Can't decide if I should move him to the strong side since he is only 226 pounds. His potential rating will increase if I do move him.
                              2.25 - LT Michael Meyer = 28/57 - Good backup already.
                              3.25 - K Nate Shelton = 64/70 - Nice. Immediate starter.
5.25 - QB Donnell Gray = 10/59 - He'll get a ton of playing time in the pre-season, hopefully he can back up Parrish for the next 5 years.
5.26 - LCB Blaine Stokes = 19/60 - Best pick if his ratings hold after Camp.
6.25 - RT Levon Clemons = 17/41 - Not bad. Provides cheap, young depth.
                              7.25 - C Brady Emmons = 20/36 - Meh city. Probably won't even sign him.
