  • REMINDER: NEW FA RULES IN EFFECT

Last season, we discussed ways to lessen the effect of the big one year contracts. We kicked around alot of ideas and in the end decided to do something. The final rule I decided upon was to eliminate 1 or 2 yr offers from any FA on the Grey Sheet (the top 75 FAs) unless they request one.

Ive thought about that and realized that because of the lack of time I have to observe the league it would be a little easier for me if we tweak the rule a little. The new rule is this:

For every FA on the Grey Sheet, an owner must at least offer the number of years demanded by the player. This rule stays in effect until the second stage of FA has ended. This rule does not apply to players not on the Grey Sheet or RFA.

Ex. This means if a player is demanding a 4 yr contract, an owner must at least offer a 4 yr deal or more.

I will post a list of every Grey Sheet FA on Thursday night with the number of years they are demanding.

There are penalties that will be assessed if someone fails to follow the rules. If an owner offers a GS FA a contract for less years than he requests, I will ask the owner to withdraw the offer before the next sim and give him a warning. If an player signs the contract before the owner is able to withdraw the offer, I will immedaiately release the player from the team and the owner will have to take the cap hit associated with the release. If an owner continues to break this rule, he faces possible removal of draft picks.

This is a pretty easy rule to follow. If you are bidding on a FA on the Grey Sheet, do not remove any years from his requested contract. If you see a fellow owner breaking the rule, please contact me by pm.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Sounds good to me.

Maybe some FAs will actually sign with the Bombers now. (easy setup for you jackasses)

      Bump.

I dont have time tonight to make a list of all the players on the Grey Sheet and how many years they are asking but it should be easy enough to follow.

DONT SUBTRACT YEARS FROM A PLAYERS' REQUESTED CONTRACT!

Was CB Neal Truitt just looking for a one-year deal?

Yeah, I was surprised about that. Truitt's only in his 8th year but he didnt want a long term deal.

Me too, I offered him a multi-year deal anyway, but as usual, the one year deal gets it done.

It should be fairly clear by now how the contract evaluation algorithm works. Bonus per year is the most important factor. A multi-year contract *can* eat out a one-year deal. It just has to be structured as a bonus-heavy one. If I offer a $9M bonus and $1M salary, to beat that with a three-year deal, you need to offer something more than a $27M bonus and $1M in each year of the deal.

Oh I know how it works, I'm not crying about it. I've always though thought the game having these top free agents preferring 1 year deals was ridiculous. Just takes away from the realism.

We had a good feeling we'd be losing Landry anyway, and really aren't that upset. This is why we went Passmore to summer league, he'll be ready to step up and take his place.

Actually I think this was realistic. Truitt is in his 8th year. Not over the hill but not exactly young. So I can understand why he would want and prefer a bonus heavy 1yr deal. He can gets a big chunk of guaranteed money this year and he's free to get another big one year deal next year.

The purpose of the rule is to keep the player's intent.Take Fernando Perkins for example. He cost himself about 4 mil a year because of the 1 yr deal he signed with CLB last year. Last year, Perkins asked for a 4 yr deal and had a few 4-5 yr deals for over 10 mill a year. Instead he accepted a 1 yr, 10mil deal. This yr, he was a FA again and the deal he accepted was worth 6mil a year.

I think this rule does a good job of keeping some of the realism. Bonus always matters most and if a player will accept a one yr deald he will accept one.

Bump for the new owners. This is the only rule when bidding on FA:

For every FA on the Grey Sheet, an owner must at least offer the number of years demanded by the player. This rule stays in effect until the second stage of FA has ended. This rule does not apply to players not on the Grey Sheet or RFA.
