Can you name more than 2 players on the OSFL Champion St. Paul Bandits? The Bandits are arguably the greatest franchise in OSFL history with 2 Stevens Cups yet most people only know QB Dusty Galloway and RB Rob Cote. Maybe that is the reason they are so successful. The Bandits went 14-2 but teams like Phoenix and Baltimore got more attention during the season. Even after the Bandits made it to the Stevens Cup many (including myself) thought Memphis would win. While this team may not be well known, they are loaded with talent. Galloway is perhaps the greatest QB in OSFL history. He is a 2 time All Pro and Stevens Cup MVP. Not much else has to be said about him after looking at his stats and awards. The reason for his success is RB Rob Cote and WRs Dwyane Holzberger and Bo Stuart. Stuart and Holtzberger are still in their prime but the Bandits should be concerned about Cote and their running game.
Cote is a surefire hall of famer and has run for over 1000 yds the past 6 yrs. With that said, he is in his 10 yr and scouts think that he lost a step. Also RB Antonio Singleton will push Cote for his starting spot. Singleton ran for 648 yards in a spot role last year. On defense, the Bandits are older but I think they have a few good years left in them The addition of DE Byron Douhett will give the Bandits much needed depth at DE. This team has very few holes and could easily be the first team to win back-to-back championships.
Don’t get me wrong. Myron Allen is a good quarterback. Still the last two years he has struggled to return to his All Pro level of 2009. What makes him look worse is when you compare him to the top QB’s selected in subsequent years. Allen’s stats from last year were good but compared to the year Rico Whalen, Jay Nori and Roy Parrish (all #1 picks like Allen) had….many think that Allen is the worst of that bunch. Last year, Allen signed a 5 yr deal that will keep him as the N. Liberty signal caller for the until 2016 and many believe he will have a great year and lead N. Liberty back to the playoffs. One reason people believe the Enforcers will be back is the continued growth of RB Conrad Bronson. 4 years in the OSFL and 4 100-yrd seasons for Bronson. Many feel that he hasn’t received his just due because of a perceived attitude problems but I think most GMs in the OSFL would be OK with a bad attitude if it came with 1600 yds, The return of WR Patrick Seigrist is another reason why N. Liberty is a playoff contender. Seigrist ( a former OSFL’ s fastest man) broke his leg in the second game of the 2011 season and is expected back after Week 2. There are rumors around the league that Seigrist’s speed and skills have taken a significant hit with the injury but I’ll wait until I see him in action before I pass judgment.
On defense, the biggest news is the addition of DT Wally Turner. Turner is a two time All Pro but he was a huge disappointment in Portland the last two years. The Enforcers are hoping he can turn it around by playing for a winning team. The linebacking crew featuring Joel Wild and Zach McDonald is one of the leagues best and their secondary is good enough to keep scores down. As long as Allen and the offense can put points on the board I can see the Enforcers making the playoffs.
All I can say about Dakota is that they are stacked on offense. They have the most talented QB in the OSFL in Roy Parrish. They have a 100 0 yd received in Jerry Frye and a RB that I guarantee will have a 1000 yd season in Sherdrick Allen. The Totems O line is relatively young and does a great job of keeping Parrish off his back. There only issue is their lack of depth on offense. If Frye is injured, there isn’t anyone else who compares on this team. Same goes for RB.
New SS Robbie Goodstriker is one of the most consistent and talented safeties in the league. With Robbie you get 90 plus tackles and two interceptions (6 last year). After 6 yrs with Waco, Goodstriker is coming to Dakota and the Totems need it. Their defensive line doesn’t provide much pressure and their best linebacker, Benji Taylor is out for the first quarter of the season. The minute Goodstriker steps on the field he immediately becomes the best player on the Totems’ defense and that’s not a good thing. It takes depth and defense to make the playoffs and the Totems have neither.
A team is built through the draft and the Chicago Reapers have done a average job drafting. Entering his 6th season 2007 #1 pick QB Desmond Kaplan has proven to be an average QB at best. Part of that could be because he doesn’t have much support around him but a career 74.6 QB rating isn’t what you expect from a #1 pick. 2008 pick DT Terrance Scott struggled in his 4th year after getting 11 sacks in 2010. Many of their 2nd and 3rd round picks (like Henry Rose and Jeff Filby) are no longer with the team or even in the league. It’s not all bad news though. RB Ian Sanderson, LB Julio Durham and last years #1 Bryant Hopper are all great picks and players that this organization can build with. The Reapers have a healthy DE Bucky Sanford to anchor the defense. Will the Reapers make the playoffs? No, but they are putting the pieces together to make a run in a few years.
