  • Portland Draft Report

1.3 - Eddie Castillo - QB - Portland State = The Phantoms franchise has needed a legit starting QB since league inception. Billy Joe Drummond, Shaun Douglas, Herman Alabaso, Ty Poston, Henry Andrews, Julio Oliver...none of those names ring a bell? Exactly. After years of subpar QB play and spending mid-round picks to try and solve the problem, I decided to take a stand. When the draft order and prospects laid out, I knew Castillo was the guy. I didn't even scout a 2nd QB. A local product, going to school at nearby PSU, Castillo has all the ability in the world. He is a little raw but hopefully, he is the answer at QB this franchise has been hoping for since 2006.

1.25 - Harry Drain - WR - Southern University = This guy has one of the best names in this years draft class. Maybe even one of the best in the OSFL. Harry, Drain. Awesome. Similar to the quarterback position, the Phantoms have never had much talent at WR. After trading Sammy Slade away, the wide receiver position has been a revolving door. I loved Drain's combine and his bars. His 98 volatility makes me nervous, but he was easily the best WR available at the time and I had to trade up to make sure I didn't miss out. Hopefully he can develop into Castillo's #1 target. He is pretty developed so he will probably be playing before Castillo is ready.

2.30 - Quentin Donaldson - CB - Arkansas State = I'm never big on drafting a guy who didn't workout, especially in the 2nd round, but I think Donaldson will be fine. He is very smart and looks to have very good bars. My scout also liked him. If he rates out how I expect, he will probably start, at least as a nickelback. I don't know how good he will be in run support, but I am desperate for a guy who can cover a WR.

4.1 - Thurman Joyner - S - LSU = One of the best agility scores in the entire draft. My starting SS is getting up there in years, so I think in a season or two Joyner could be the guy. He has good size and looks like he should be good for run support. I'm not sure of his endurance or ability to cover, so he might come off the field on passing downs.

4.3 - Ty Cascadden - WR - Iowa State = My second "non workout" guy. He is smart and he has really good bars. I tried to target WRs who actually know how to run routes. In the past, I had drafted players with all good ratings, except running routes. Well, they never get open and my QB gets sacked or throws picks.

4.4 - Ray Rose - CB - Ohio State = Great name. Great bars. Very smart. Great speed. Great position drill at the combine. I think him and Donaldson could be my starting corners by seasons end.

4.15 - Max Owens - P - LSU = I landed a punter in the late 7th round a few years back who has played "ok." Owens however might turn out to be one of those game-changing type punters. I need it.

4.20 - Derek Balent - DE - Washington State = My only Wazzu player drafted this year. He has good size and overall ability. I plan on moving him to DT where I think he will flourish. He is 6'6 299lbs.

4.30 - Anthony Ellis - WR - West Virginia = Again, desperate for WRs. Ellis is solid all-around with a great position drill score. His bars are so-so, but I expect him to be a great special teams gunner, even if he doesn't work out as a WR.

5.2 - Ed Austin - DE - Auburn = Way undersized. Very fast. Should be a good situational pass-rusher. Hopefully.

7.3 - J.C. Banks - OLB - Ohio State = 98 volatility. Great run stuffer. I think he could be serviceable as a backup MLB and maybe play in goal line. I have a bunch of scrubs at backup LB, so he will have a spot on this squad.

7.6 - Terrell Browning - RB - Georgia Tech = I really didn't want to wait until the 7th round to select a RB, but none of the guys I liked fell to my picks. Browning has good size, great speed, and an average all-around combine. His bars were amazing, but my scout thought he was overrated. Hopefully my scout is wrong. I have a bunch of scrubs at RB, so Browning will be given a look.

7.7 - Zach Loper - OLB - Pittsburgh = Undersized. Can't rush the passer at all. Sounds like a good 4-3 OLB to me. Again, my backups are scrubs, so he will likely make this team.

7.28 - Mickey Andrews - DT - Northwestern = He is a bit undersized and might benefit from losing a few more pounds and moving to DE. He looks like a great run stuffer, but not much else. My defensive line has a ton of holes, so he could find a spot in the rotation.

7.32 - Kim Lane - WR - Nebraska = Mr. Irrelevant. A WR out of Nebraska? Developed 13%? With a volatility of 4? Sounds like a guy who will likely be cut. However, he did have a blue score in his test and 40 time. The odds are against him, but I'm pulling for Kim Lane.

    ----

Fifteen draft picks. I'm really excited to have Castillo. The rest, I'm iffy about at best. Going into the draft, I was desperate for WRs, RBs, CBs, and defensive line. I ended up with four WRs, two CBs, and two DL. I really wish I would of landed a quality RB earlier, but I guess that will have to wait until next year when I am picking the top 10 again.

Thoughts? Scouts opinions? Hate the picks? Love the picks?

I'm interested to see how Drain, Cascadden and Joyner work out. My scout had both those WR's as underrated.
    OSFL -- Baltimore Bulls
    Shiba -- Richmond Rebels

Ruining teams since.....well, a long time ago.

I think Drain will turnout to be startable, but far from all world. I bet he ends up in the 45-55 range. Joyner, if his endurance and coverage skills are as bad as I expect, I think he might just be a situational DB. And Cascadden, who knows. Gamble for sure.
