CHARLOTTE, NC--
The Charlotte Knights officially introduced their #1 pick, CB Jeremy Camilleri at a 5:00 PM press conference. Camilleri, who played under two coaches in his collegiate career at Alabama after being recruited by Nick Saban, joins a Charlotte team that has not surpassed the six win total in three years under general manager Jake Wolf.
Camilleri is viewed by ownership as a last chance for Wolf, who has been unable to turn around what was once a playoff franchise. In his first three drafts, Wolf traded down in the first round each time, passing on league stars MLB Julio Durham and QB Jay Nori. He also traded away leading reciever and former league's fastest man WR Patrick Siegrist before Siegrist could play one regular season game under Wolf's tenure.
The selection was the organizations first slam dunk decision in that same period of time. An outstanding cover corner in college, Camilleri is also a big hitter and an above average run stopper. After the 2011 college season, there was some debate on whether he or new Portland Phantom QB Eddie Castillo would be the top prospect entering the draft but after turning in an extremely impressive combine performance, Camilleri became the clear option at #1. Camilleri showed his athletic ability, running a blistering 4.29 40, benching 21 reps on the press, and clocking 6.78 in the agility drill; he also showed off his mental skills with a 43 on the solescemic test. The 40 and agility times were the best in the entire draft.
"I'm looking forward to joining an organization who is committed to winning," said Camilleri, the OSFL's first defensive player to be chosen first overall. "The past is the past. I'll be joining 11 other former or current first round picks here in Charlotte. We have the talent; now we just need to find a way to put that talent to use."
