  • 2011 Week 15 OSFL Wrap-up

    Week Fifteen

    Top Five

    1. Phoenix Riders (13-1) - W 35-17 over Utah Bees - LW #1
The Riders dominated the Bees lead by running back Fernando Perkins 152 yards and three touchdowns. Phoenix has its next to games on the road but both teams are winnable, even if they give the starters some rest. If anyone else besides Phoenix wins the Stevens Cup, it will be an upset.

    2. St. Paul Bandits (12-2) - W 34-7 over North Liberty Enforcers – LW #3
The Bandits got three touchdowns from WR Bo Stuart. Two touchdown receptions and a 39-yard fumble return. The Bandits actually play the same two opponents that Phoenix plays, Los Alamos and Chicago, but they have both at home. 14-2 season heading your way.

    3. Camden Cutters (11-3) - W 16-13 over Baltimore Bulls - LW #5
Impressive win over the former division leading Bulls. For those that don't know much about Camden, look no further than their game this weekend. They run a very efficient passing offense, (#1 in the league in completion %) and a good overall defense (#6 in the league in scoring). Impressive squad.

    4. Baltimore Bulls (11-3) - L 13-16 to Camden Cutters - LW #2
Swept in the season series vs. Camden. Two losses in their last three games. Lingering hamstring injury to the teams best WR. This is a team heading in the wrong direction. I still think they have enough talent to turn it around and get back on track. Next week they are at (6-8) Motor City, so they should get it right soon.

    5. Memphis Admirals (11-3) - W 23-3 to New Orleans Stingrays - LW #5
23-3. They handled the Stingrays, who were a top five team for most of the season. The Admirals finish the season with two very easy games, which should allow them to rest up the starters for the playoffs. Don't be shocked if Memphis is a force.

    Bottom One
    1. Port City Steam (2-12) - L 7-24 to Waco Warhawks
This team is going through a major transition. A new face at QB. New owner/gm. And the worst season in the OSFL.

    Game of the Week
This weeks "Game of the Week" was between bitter rivals, the Washington Bombers and the Portland Phantoms. Arguably the leagues best rivalry featured two of the leagues worst teams. The game ended as a 13-7 victory for the (3-11) Portland Phantoms, but the game had a crazy finish. On the game-winning touchdown drive, the Portland Phantoms had two huge plays prior to the touchdown:

4-8-WAS39 (4Q: 02:08) Henry Andrews sacked by DE Roger Boren for a loss of 5 yards. Sack allowed by Wesley Threats. The ball goes over on downs. PENALTY: Washington was called for Unnecessary Roughness.

3-11-WAS30 (4Q: 01:37) Henry Andrews pass completed to FB D.J. Sera for 20 yards. Tackled by CB Van Cobbins. Sera gained 11 yards after the catch.

On that fourth-and-eight play, I was bailed out by the refs and then on third-and-eleven, my QB throws a 20 yard pass to the fullback. Incredible game. I was really lucky to come out with the win. But a win is a win. THE PORTLAND PHANTOMS SWEPT THE WASHINGTON BOMBERS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2006!!!

Next weeks "Game of the Week" is between the (9-5) San Fransisco Bayhawks and the (9-5) Kalispel Stags. Both teams are in first place in their divisions. Both only have a one game lead. Huge game. I like Kalispel.

    Player Spotlights
This weeks offensive spotlight is on San Fransisco Quarterback Rico Whalen. This guy has carried this team all season. This week he threw for four touchdowns and 366 yards in the 34-31 win over division rival the Yuma Aces.

This weeks defensive spotlight is on Portland Phantoms Middle Linebacker Lenny Prescott. The 7th overall pick in this years draft has been an absolute gem. He leads all linebackers in tackles with 104.

    Extra Points
    1. Welcome to the league new owners!!!
    2. Camden QB has a 94.6 QB rating this season, with 14 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He also leads the entire OSFL with 15 turnovers.

Nice write-up. I'm not sure if we will go 14-2 but I just excited to make the playoffs. I might give some people some rest.

Camden Quarterback Fumbles, Stumbles Way Into Record Book.

Chances are that with only two games left to play, this latest attempt by the Cutter's quarterback to break Randy Richardson's single season fumble record will once again come up short. Although Martin Cothran can take some pride in knowing that his 15 fumbles so far this season have pushed him into the #1 spot in the league's all time fumbles list, just ahead of Ohio Valley's Rob Knopf. Interestingly enough the two quarterbacks set face off this week in Camden... in the rain.

          Hilarity will no doubt ensue.

But while Cothran's ability to cough up the football is impressive, it may be his ability to hold onto the ball too long that could yet make him an OSFL legend. By taking three sacks last week against that team from South Maryland, Cothran guaranteed his fifth consecutive season of having been sacked 50 or more times.

Think about this for a moment.

In the league's history only five other quarterbacks have had to suffer this particular indignity (including the latest member The Fifty Faceplant club, Port City rookie Sammy Dillon) and together these men have accomplished the feat nine times. Martin has done it now in five consecutive years.

Though in fairness to those other quarterbacks, their Seasons of Suffering often came by way of some of some truly inept teammates and some occasionally horrible coaching. The combined records of the teams of those five quarterbacks is 45-80. None of those teams made it over .500. But the Cutters have been a playoff team, four of the last five years. They are 53-27 over that span. And it makes it's awful hard to explain away this streak as a result of bad team play.

You just have to accept the fact that Cothran has feet made of concrete. It doesn't matter who is blocking for him, or what scheme they use, it's just a matter of time and “The Turf Inspector” is going down. It's like one of those disaster specials on the Discovery Channel. You know how it's going to turn out, the only thing you can do is sit back and enjoy the carnage.

And what a glorious show it has been. For his career, the Camden signal caller has been laid out by opposing players a staggering 307 times (these are only the regular season sacks mind you, he has also been taken down 6 times in the playoffs and 37 times in meaningless preseason games) in only six seasons. That's almost 100 more than than number two on the list. Only three other players have even made it to even 200 times sacked. Cothran's three sacks last week, actually lowered his career average per game.

Truly he is the rock, the anchor, the foundation of the Camden offense.

(Also, nice write up Pat, I look foward to these every week)
