Week 4
Top Five
1. Phoenix Riders (4-0) - PR 88 - W 38-31 over Ohio Valley Showboats - LW #1
This team is still undefeated and have won their last seven games, dating back to last season. This week the Phoenix Riders beat the Ohio Valley Showboats on an 89 yard TD pass from Lorenzon Kaplan to Nick Devitt with just over a minute left in the game. Next week the (2-2) Los Alamos Monsters come to town. Put the Riders down for 5-0.
2. Baltimore Bulls (4-0) - PR 79 – W 14-10 over Pearl Harbor Defenders - LW #2
The Bulls overcame a lackluster day from their offense by forcing three interceptions of Pearl Harbor quarterback Hunter McGarrahan, including an 39-yard touchdown return by safety Chester Anthony. Next week the Bulls travel to Yuma to face the (2-2) Aces. The Bulls are favored in this game but Yuma is very dangerous.
3. Dakota Totems – (3-1) PR 83 - W 30-7 over Gainesville Gaels - LW#5
Parrish did it again. Roy, the Dakota franchise signal caller threw for three scores and over 300 yards in the blowout of the Gaels. This is one of the leagues best teams and can play with anyone. The Totems one loss this season was to the (4-0) Riders, 13-17. Next week the Totems are on bye. With no big-time injuries to let heal, will this break kill the Totems momentum?
4. St. Paul Bandits (3-1) - PR 78 – W 26-14 over North Liberty Enforcers – LW NR
Even on days where their start quarterback is off his mark, the Bandits find a way to win. This is their debut on the rankings, but don't discredit them, this is a very good team. This squad opened the season with three straight road games and their only loss was to (3-1) Dakota, 39-42. Next week they host (3-1) Morgantown.
5. New Orleans Stingrays (3-1) - PR 76 - W 31-17 over Kalispel Sting - LW NR
The Stingrays bounced back from a 7-17 deficit to beat the (2-2) Kalispel Sting. Next week the Stingrays host the (2-2) Washington Bombers. New Orleans is favored by nine. I expect it to be worse.
Bottom One
1. Portland Phantoms - PR 22 - L 6-30 to Waco Warhawks
My first offensive play of the game is an interception. From then on, it really didn't get much better. Doubled in time of possession again. Two interceptions. Nothing going at all offensively. Just an awful, awful game and team. Next week the Phantoms travel to (2-2) Memphis. The Admirals are favored by nine.
Game of the Week
Well, it definitely was an exciting game. The Stags outplayed the Stringrays for the first two quarters, but could not maintain that intensity for the whole game. The win puts New Orleans atop the the AC South and the loss drops the Stags to second in the AC North.
Next weeks game of the week is between the (3-1) St. Paul Bandits and the (3-1) Morgantown Maniacs. The #1 and #3 passing offenses in all of the OSFL face off on Monday Night Football this week. The quarterbacks are top notch and have lead both of their teams to the Stevens Cup in recent seasons. This should be a high-scoring shootout. I think the Bandits will win at home.
Player Spotlights
This weeks offensive spotlight is on Chicago Reapers quarterback Desmond Kaplan. Since being selected 7th overall in 2007, Kaplan has had his share of highs and lows as the Reapers' starter. While the team has struggled this season, starting out 0-3, they did get their first win this week defeating (1-3) Columbus 38-25. Kaplan finished 18/24 for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
This weeks defensive spotlight is on Washington Bombers defensive end Roger Boren. Roger leads the league in sacks with 5.5, is tied for 1st in quarterback knockdowns (10), is tied for 3rd in hurries (8) and he has 18 solo tackles, good for third on the team. After totaling 16 sacks in 2007 and 14.5 in 2008, Boren tore his ACL in 2009. After missing the entire season, Boren returned to a entirely new defense. The defense switched from 4-3 to a 3-4 and Boren saw his sack totals drop to nine in 2010. This season, Bombers defensive coordinator Benjamin Levine, switched back to the 4-3. No one is more pleased than Boren.
Extra Points
1. Is it the off-season yet?
2. Thank you Rays.
