OSFL 2011: Year of the Cornerback?
</td></tr></tbody></table>
Its almost that time of year again. Break out you fantasy football tables, charts, graphs, and grab a beer. This year, we take a look at the top ten players from this year's draft and take a look inside to see the coveted "draft potential." Everyone would love to have a player that comes in and makes a super impact like the 2010 Rookies of the Year, Charlotte's Sedrick Thompson, or Yuma's Tracy Sneller. However, for most rookies, there's a dreaded learning curve, the transition from the college game to the professional level, that can seriously hamper full potential development. Today we'll go over the teams with the Top Ten OSFL "Potential" Picks.
#10 St. Paul Bandits
*actually he's #10 as I made a mistake reading the spreadsheet
Omar Smith(LB)
Northwestern, 6'5, 258 lbs
2011 #19 Overall Pick
-This is a BIG man. Did I forget to mention that this a big, fast, agile, strong man? Omar has the skills to stuff the run, cover the pass, and rush the passer. He's got the size and speed to matchup well with the even the best pass catching tight ends of this league. Smith has a skill set that may make him a great outside or even middle linebacker. With Bubba "Gump" Cochrane hitting the twilight of his career, the addition of a force like Smith may catapult the Bandits back into the driver's seat in the NC North.
#4 Punxsutawney Phils
Otis Reese(DE)
Southern Miss, 6'4, 286 lbs
2011 #4 Overall Pick
Despite not being the most OSFL-ready defensive end on the board, Reese was still the first end chosen, and is considered to have the biggest upside by OSFL scouts. Reese is expected to be an immovable object against the run and has surprising technique as a pass rusher. The Phils will add Reese on the right end to match up with Josh Hitchcock, the 2nd year player from Texas, who will likely lineup on the left.
#3 Washington Bombers
Mitch Holloman(CB)
Missouri, 5'9, 185 lbs
2011 #17 Overall Pick
Holloman is the fourth and final cornerback on the top ten potentials list, but as the cliche goes, "save the best for last." Or in this case, save the highest potential for last. There were six corners picked in the first round, but Holloman topped them all despite a questionable performance in the agility drill. However, Holloman has the potential to be a very dangerous punt and kick returner for the Bombers. Holloman will be a nice addition to the Washington secondary, which already includes 2-time All-OSFL safety, Jesse Zeiders and 2010 1st All-OSFL corner, Rodney Westbrook.
#2 Boston Fighting Irish
Malcolm Mills(T)
South Carolina, 6'5, 326 lbs
2011 #8 Overall Pick
The final two picks are tackles and Mills looks to be on top as one of the more solid picks of the draft. Mills was passed on by a few teams that could've have really used his help protecting their quarterbacks. Their loss became Boston's gain, as Mills will look to protect former 1st round pick, Edgar Cote. Cote has been sacked 113 times over the last three seasons, so he should be very happy with this pick.
#1 Portland Phantoms
Orlando Bell(T)
Western Michigan, 6'5, 320
2011 #1 Overall Pick
Its seems fitting that the player picked first in the draft is also the player with the highest projected potential. Bell was a monster in college, making college stars like Michigan State's Dale Beyer, look like a very average player. There were rumors in league offices that Portland may have chosen Central Florida quarterback, Sammy Dillon or FCS superstar, Shedrick Allen, but in the end, Portland has made the best possible choice for the overall #1 pick.
