OSFL and the Popularity Issue

I haven't seen any discussion of this over here. FYI, all of my other leagues are handling this by making the popularity list public prior to the draft. (If we switch to FOF Conscriptor, it can be put in there directly, even.)

As someone who knows the draft pretty well, I'd rather this be put out there for the public than for people to worry if someone is using Interrogator or not. Looking back at the 2009 draft (which was quite some time before I knew about this correlation), it looks like 5 of my 6 picks that year had good popularity scores, for example. Thoughts?

I was following this over at your site FOF a few weeks ago. I think we should just switch to the draft utility that will post a popularity list. So that way everyone can see the pop of the draft class. Just my opinion.

Damnit Ben! Finally my chance to get a one up on the league... as I've been following the issue since it was first discovered about 6 months ago(?) and now this! As long as the new utility includes it. I think it's fair game for everyone.

Well, let's be honest here: if we don't switch to the new utility, it is quite a bit of effort to see popularity in a meaningful way using Interrogator, so it might just give an advantage to people willing to put in that extra work. You can't just go into Interrogator and see that rookie WR John Smith has a popularity rating of 85. You see that Rookie #1234 at position number 6 on Team #49 has an 85 popularity. You have to cross reference player number to one table twice to get the first and last names, position number to another table to know what positions, and then filter for only the 1st year players on Team 49 (free agents).

As Ben said, not the easiest thing to do. The Draft Conscriptor though, you run Interrogator and then in the utility there is the area to upload the Interrogator file, and that info is right there in the utility for you to see. Any owner who wants it has to run Interrogator themselves though, and upload it themselves, so you still have a few minutes of work to do but it isn't much at all and pretty easy.

I finally got around to reading this and I have a couple of questions:

1) If a guy has average bars, average combine but a 80+ popularity is he guaranteed to be a solid starter or star.

2) What about the reverse? Bad populatity but good numbers.

3) Does the high popularity rule apply for veterans or only draftees?

1. Yes, but it's very, very rare that you'll see a guy with 80+ popularity who doesn't have other tell-tale signs of being a solid starter or star. This is the main reason I don't like the rule we've adopted in two of my leagues (to show popularity,) even though I think it's the best way to go: it removes the advantage for people who have put in the time to understand how it works.

2. Bad popularity does not necessarily mean he's not a very good player. I've got my WOOF and IHOF teams open right now, and I see several players who were drafted with mediocre and even very low popularity who are solid starters, and even stars. 3. Popularity can change significantly after a player is in the league. Plus, there's the fact that the bars unmask a good bit more, too. Also, guys who have had ratings reduced due to injury or volatility will usually keep their high popularity. (That RB I drafted in this league who got the random volatility hit still has it quite high, for example.)
