Port city Steam - overall analysis.. Porty City is overall very pleased with the draft. We had many needs to fill and had many players keyed that could possibly fill those needs. Having Keyed up to 8 players per position needed to fill, we successfully got every position we keyed, with a player we keyed so we couldnt be happier.. It took giving up a next year 3rd and 6th but we think it was well worth it... Our major targeting points were Offensive line, Linebackers and a quarterback capable of starting mid season.
1. Al Bradford (OLB) - After trading from 1.19 to 1.20 to get another pick later in the draft. The Steam was looking hard at tackles and cornerbacks. But after looking at the "unkeyed" speed demon outside lineback Port City could not pass. Al was the fastest linebacker in the draft, also the most developed, and had the highest Pos Spec of all linebackers... we feel he will contend for defensive rookie of the year, and will be a force to reckon with for many years.
2. Brandon Prior (OT) - Seventh rated OT in the draft and a huge whole for Port City. Was an easy pick in the 2nd round for PC. We had him our 3rd keyed OT in the whole draft board. He's great at both the run and the pass. Uses his speed, instead of strength to manuever the defender were he wants him to go. He is the 3 rd fastest OT on the board, and 4th in agility ( uses his feet very well ). Only weekness for Prior is he's not the smartest cat in the box :)
3. Doug Shields (QB) - before the draft PC tryed there hardest to get the 1st overal pick to get the highly talented Nori, but after figuring we had more needs then just QB and we couldnt offer what was offered.. well we let that go, and began looking a little deeper. We looked real close at Aaron barrett, Ian benson, and Doug Shields. We like Ian benso as a late bloomer, very fast a we thought would be a great QB for the future. Aaron barrett was next in line and we thought would be able to full fill a starting spot right away. Then we saw Doug Shields. Doug had the 3rd Strongest arm in the draft class and was the 4th rate in agilty (meaning he can manuever in the pocket, and make all throws neccessary) Doug was 2nd to only Nori in pos. spec m the only downside is he is only 16 percent devolped. We are hoping training camp and a few games behind the veteran free agent newly aquired and he'll be able to start quicker then expected. Ow ya did we mention scout had him very underrated :)
4. Karl Carpenter (C) - 7th overall rated Center. We felt he was a steal at round 4, and we feel he dropped because he didnt attend the combine. He is the smartest C in the top ten, and our scout thought he was the perfect fit for the team. We feel he is an all-around center, capable of grasping the tough PC playbook and starting as soon as preason gets underway. We feel he is the type of player that will lead this new, young up and coming line.
5. Johnnie Oukac (MLB) - 2 picks after Karl we went for our biggest need at this point in the draft. Jon was rated as a top ten MLB, but we had him scouted as our number 3 choice at this position behind the highly regarded Muncy, and Summers. Jon is the smartest LB in the draft, and the 3rd Strongest. ( will make all the proper reads and tackles ) He is 3rd in position spec and we feel even with all the hype of bradford, he will contend for the defensive rookie of the year and will likely lead the team in tackles. Will start right away.
6. Ron Chamoun (OT) - After Drafting Brandon, we were still in need of another solid tackle and with all the depth in line in this years draft we thought we would go back to the well. Ron had a very solid college carear and was the 3rd smartest tackle, and 3rd most developed in the top 20. We believe we have 2 rookie tackles in this class capable of starting opening day. Will see :)
7. Oscar Mills (DT) - PC felt the strength of this draft was both the O-line and Defensive Tackles. We were in need of a solid player in front of are solid rookie Linebacking core and we felt we could get a starter at this position due to the depth at DT this year in the draft. Oscar 15th rated DT in the draft was still scouted at a solid 4.8-5.2. Scout had him maxed out at run defense and with his very large figure will help keep the LB'ing core free to roam. He has a little weaker upper body then we wanted, but blocking power does come from the legs :) Oscar is 54 percent developed giving him a great chance to also start right away.
8. Otis Knight (G) - Left guard is already anchored with pro - bowl Ralph Strikwerda, but pc still need another starter. We looked hard in free agency and found a couple players capable of making average osfl starter but we felt we still need to look in the draft as well. This picked capped off what we feel was the strength of our draft "hopefully" 4 capable osfl starters as rookies, could be the osfl's youngest line coming into the new year. Otis was the 3rd fastest guard in the draft and is very agile. We fill he can help out with some great down field blocks, and we feel him we his speed will give us a new dimension of plays such as traps and will help break Wesley Bornstein down field ( pull guard ).
9. Shawn Horner (RB) - Ever heard of M.J. Drew for the Jaguars. Shawn is the shortest back in the draft and the 2nd fastest behind only sedrick thompson. We feel he will give us a home run threat backing up Wesley. We also draft him for his kick off return abilities. We have faith that he will be the biggest suprise rookie contributor this year.
10. Marc Hingis (CB) - Can never have enough cover corners in any foot ball league. Marc was scouted maxed out on both man coverage, and zone defense, and he is also a run stuffing corner. We brought a couple free agents in to contend for the nickle back role. But for a 7th round pick we feel Marc will be contending for a starting job behind 2 solid corners. Ever wonder how players get rated, well we wonder how this guy was rated so low when our scout had him rated so high. Will see how he develops.
11. Clyde Breaux (WR) Possibly could be the only rookie drafted in our class that might not see any time. We feel he will push for the 4th reciever slot, but might just have to settle for the practice squad. But scout thought breaux was very underrated and we had him keyed for the 6th round, so were very happy to have him aboard for spring training will see how he works out.
Would love to hear comments on how you guys thought i did in the draft this year. I know its early and we dont know how they will actually do, but its always fun guessing...
