Welcome the 2010 OSFL draft preview! Here are your host John Smith and OSFL draft analyst and the first ever OSFL Legend of the Game, former Motor City safety, Craig Duncan!

John: Welcome everybody! We’re here to break down the first round of the 2010 OSFL draft with our first mock draft preview. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover so lets get started. Craig, why don’t you take the first few picks.

Charlotte Knights

Craig: Gladly John. Charlotte currently holds the first pick in the 2010 draft, but the question may not be who they select, but who they flip the pick with. Looking at Charlotte’s most pressing needs its hard to tell what pick they could go with that would make sense in the first slot. Charlotte is very strong along the lines, and with a bunch of talent located on both the d-line and o-line in the draft, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for them to spend money on a luxury pick. They’re picking first for a reason so they need to address holes in the team. All world QB Jay Nori would seem like a lock to be a star in Charlotte, but third year signal caller Marlon Madison seems to be in favor with the team and may be seen as good enough to solidify the position without having to address the need in the draft. With all that being said I find their secondary to be one of the weaker units in the league and in need of definite upgrade. I recommend selling off their #1 pick this year to the highest bidder and drop down a few spots to pick up CB Lincoln Ramsey who is by far the cream of the DB crop. He fits a hole, and helps solidify the team’s future with extra first round picks years later picked up via trade.

Craig Duncan says: Trade out, pick up CB Lincoln Ramsey a few picks later.

Brooklyn Hitmen

Craig: Jay Nori, welcome to your new home! Nori is a no-brainer for the Hitmen with the second pick… provided of course that another team doesn’t jump up to the first pick and snatch him up. Nori fits a need and is the best player in the draft. Brooklyn could not ask for more out of their second pick.

Craig Duncan says: Take Jay Nori, thank your lucky stars.

Waco Warhawks

Craig: Waco needs a DE. And they need one bad. Forcing the second lowest numbers of sacks in the OSFL in 2009, Waco can instantly bolster their sagging pass rush with the selection of RDE Isaac Andrews. Pair Andrews with last years first round pick Jorge Carlson and you instantly have a tandem of the best upcoming DE’s in the entire league. This pick of course can change provided on the moves Waco makes in FA.

Craig Duncan says: Take Isaac Andrews, your secondary will be happy campers.

Phoenix Riders

Craig: Phoenix is a pick in which I have no clue as to how the team is leaning. At the four spot, there are still a ton of quality players out there, but as always, do they fit team needs? Phoenix is not particularly strong in the WR area. Unfortunately for them, unless they feel like taking a huge risk and reaching for SE Jerry Frye their does not seem to be many draft ready options. CB Lincoln Ramsey COULD end up at this spot if Phoenix feels the need to upgrade their pass defense, but what I think they should do is select C, J.B. Mahon. Mahon who is a flat out stud would instantly step in at the C position and become the anchor of the Riders line for years to come. With another pick at #15 Phoenix has plenty of options early that can help make their team stronger, quickly.

Craig Duncan says: Take J.B. Mahon and shore up a need position for the Riders.

Anchorage Gladiators

Craig: Anchorage is in luck with their first pick of the first round. In a trade with Pearl Harbor that helped the Defenders net MLB Ken Vargas with a late first round pick, Anchorage picked up Pearl Harbor’s first round pick and instantly won itself a chance to pick up an impact player early in the 2010 draft. If I’m Anchorage, I’m on the phone with Charlotte this minute offering up my 1.5 and 1.20 pick to move into the #1 slot to select Jay Nori. Anchorage finished 8-8 last year, just on the outside of the playoffs, add Nori to the mix, and they instantly become a big player in the AC North.

Craig Duncan says: TRADE UP NOW! Nori is the missing piece!
Washington Bombers

Craig: Washington needs to make this pick work as they don’t draft again all the way until the third round. Washington will be an interesting pick as they have several places as to where they can go with their pick, and several capable players that could fill those spots. At this time, the best remaining player on my big board is LDT Louie Nelms. While Nelms projects to be an excellent player in the OSFL, DT is not an especially weak position for the Bombers, and with no picks in the second round, it may be wise to fill a need rather than to bolster a position that is already solid. MLB Harris Muncy is the next best player available on the defensive side of the board, but once again, are the Bombers confident enough in the players they already have to pass on the big time run stopper from Louisiana Tech? RG Darrell Schindlbeck would be an ideal fit for the Bombers at RG, but is his value high enough to justify taking a G this early in the draft? If they were to go that route, it’d most likely be best to trade back a bit and pick up a pick in the late first or second round.

Craig Duncan says: I think Nelms will be too good of a talent to pass up for Washington, but if I were calling the shots, I’d trade down, pick up Schindlbeck and grab an extra pick or two.
Chicago Reapers

Craig: Chicago is another team with a couple of choices as to where they could go. One of the more pressing needs seems to be at the RB position. While RB Amos Vedros was serviceable last year, RB Sedrick Thompson should be a clear upgrade at the position for the Reapers. Also, the team may take a look at LDE Jackie Patrick if they cannot resign big time free agent LDE Ben Ellard.

Craig Duncan says: Both players are already fairly advanced coming out of college. I really see this pick being decided on how the Reapers play the free agency market in regards to what they do with Ben Ellard. I feel they find a way to resign him, or bring in a player they feel can be a serviceable DE for them. With all that being said, I think RB Sedrick Thompson will be their pick and will start from day one for the Reapers.
South Maryland Jaguars

Craig: South Maryland has a lot of needs. But I’m a fan of shoring up the lines anytime you can. That’s why I think Maryland needs to take LDE Jackie Patrick. He’ll instantly be the best DE the team has, and like I said, anytime a player can help out on the line, I’m a fan.

Craig Duncan says: Go with LDE Jackie Patrick. He’s not going to single handedly save the day, but he’s a good starting point.
Camden Cutters

Craig: To me, this is a no brainer. MLB Harris Muncy seems like the perfect fit in Camden. Once again, this guy will start from day one and be a dominant force in the run game. Muncy offers great value at #9 as well because he was one of the top five players on my big board before the draft.

Craig Duncan says: MLB Harris Muncy. Welcome to Camden, Harris!
Motor City Mechanics

Craig: Ah, my former team. Not a lot of work needs to be done for Motor City to be a factor in the terrible AC East. Motor City does need to do some work in free agency to either resign their players or make some upgrades at certain positions. As for the draft, I think SE Jerry Frye makes the most sense for Motor City with pick #10. I don’t like drafting WR’s early, especially one that are as raw as Frye, but with a lot of work in camp, Frye could progress into a viable first or second option in the Mechanics passing attack by the end of his first year.

Craig Duncan says: Go with SE Jerry Frye. He’s raw, but he has great potential and has game breaking speed.
