Rushed to get it out ahead of the week 9 sim, and cut and pasted together out of a couple of different working versions. So it's likely full of all sorts of spelling and other errors. Hopefully next week's will be a bit more organized.
I've never been particularly fond of the in game power rankings. They start out based purely as a measure of overall roster strength and take all together too long to adjust to how well the teams are actually doing with those rosters. So I decided to work up my own ranking system, which I intend to post updates to as time allows. It's based off each team's overall record, modified by a weighted winning percentage score (which includes your opponent's record), point differential, total turnover differential (fumbles, interceptions and punts), yards per pass attempt differential (14 of the last 16 division winners finished in the top 10 in this statistic) and finally a "momentum" score which considers how you've done in your last 3 games, who you last beat, or lost to, and how good a team they were.
The system is far from perfect, and it produces some eyebrow raising results at times. But it's just for fun. Maybe it'll generate some discussion, maybe produce some locker room bulletin board material.
Week 8
1: Morgantown
Score: 1.645 Last Week: 1 In Game PR: 2
Who else did you expect? Even if they've played the softest schedule of any of the top 5, they've dominated those games with the best point differential and YPA differential in the league. Until someone manages to beat them, the Manics sit alone at the top.
2: Memphis
Score: 1.539 Last Week: 4 In Game PR: 8
Memphis knocked off 4-2 Punxsutawney last week to jump up 2 spots and stay just ahead of St. Paul, but upcoming games against Motor City and Ohio Valley will make it very hard for them to hold this spot, even if they win.
3: St. Paul
Score: 1.512 Last Week: 5 In Game PR: 4
So, if they just beat the #2 team last week, they're 2-1 against "Top 10" teams, why aren't they #2 this week? An overall opponent record of below .500. Yeah, it doesn't make a lot a sense to me either.
4: North Liberty
Score: 1.425 Last Week: 3 In Game PR: 3
Speaking of curious rankings, the Enforcers drop on spot behind the Bandits this week, a team they've previously beaten. The result of a bye week versus a win against the previously 5-1 Bayhawks. But don't feel too bad for North Liberty, a win against Yuma will look much more impressive than almost anything the Bandits can do in Chicago.
5: Anchorage
Score: 1.419 Last Week: 6 In Game PR: 6
Anchorage added another impressive win this week over 4-2 Denver. The Gladiators might chafe at still being ranked below Memphis, who they defeated in week 3, but that's what they get for losing to Chicago.
6: San Fransisco
Score: 1.348 Last Week: 2 In Game PR: 5
A tough loss drops the Bayhawks 4 spots this week. San Fransisco has played one of the toughest schedules so far, and have only gone 1 for 3 against opponents currently ranked in my top 10. That alone will keep them out of the top 5.
7: Utah
Score: 1.293 Last Week: 7 In Game PR: 1
The defending champs stand pat with a solid win over a less than solid Washington team. A win this week over Denver, though, probably won't benefit the Bee's score as much as it'll hurt the Grizzlies.
8 Las Vegas
Score: 1.076 Last Week: 14 In Game PR: 16
Viva Las Vegas! Somehow the Outlaw's 6 point win over Pearl Harbor is enough to boost them to the number 8 spots. A closer look at the performance metrics shows that Las Vegas is above average in most of them and have managed a 4-3 record against opponents who are a combined two games above .500.
9 Gainesville
Score: 1.063 Last Week: 17 In Game PR: 13
Thee consecutive wins over three admittedly less than impressive NC East opponents is enough to carry the Gaels into the top ten. Gainesville's TTO and YPA differential scores aren't very impressive, but they've only lost 2 games and one of those was to 7-0 Morgantown.
10 Denver.
Score: 1.055 Last Week: 8 In Game PR: 7
After two consecutive losses the Grizzlies are hanging in the top 10 by the skins of their teeth and it isn't going to get any easier for them from here. Defending champs Utah are up next.
And the Rest
11. Yuma
12. Portland
13. Los ALamos
14. Kalispel
15. Punxsutawney
16. Port City
17. Lake County
18. New Orleans
19. S. Maryland
20. Boston
21. Dakota
22. Waco
23. Motor City
24. Camden
25. Charlotte
26. Phoenix
27. Pearl Harbor
28. Columbus
29. Ohio Valley
30. Chicago.
31. Washington
32. Brooklyn
