Q&A with Aston and Rob. Big thanks to Rush_27 for doing this. Bowl sim in 15mins. Good luck to both teams.
Aston's thoughts on the 2041 Tobacco Bowl;
Do you feel that this team is better than last years bowl winners?
No, I think last year's team was stronger. RB was younger and better, and we lost 60-rated players at DE, LB, and S. We've gained in younger players developing, however. The regular season record isn't shocking, but it's also a little lucky with all those close games.
Do you feel that this Irish team has the potential to match the all conquering Utah team of years gone by or is it too early to say?
I doubt it! Utah had everything in spades. This team is very nicely positioned, though, as well as you can be in this era. Although, Randy Boone went bowling for the first time in his 5th year, too. I think too much can happen these days, and we'll see more teams take their turns.
Which players on this team deserve a mention? Any un-sung heroes whose contribution may have gone un-noticed? DE Rice put up double digit sack numbers.
Boston's pass rush was mediocre this year, and I think Rice is part of that. He's solid; not spectacular, and his PR% bears that out. Sacks are a glory stat.
I think one guy that really needs mentioning is RB Stewart. He's carried us for a while now, and he's still going. He plays a big role in the passing game, too. It's really nice to have this kind of RB on top of a strong passing game.
Defensively, we have this new guy, CB Sebastian. Signed in FA8 to a minimum bonus deal. He's nothing too special, but turned in a monster season at nickel, tiding us over some losses in the secondary. 13 passes defensed is second on the team, and he got 71 tackles. Wow!
Tell us about your opponent in the 2041 Bowl Game, Waco, an opponent that you know well from last years Championship and also the big game in 2037? Do you have an answer to their passing attack?
I recall Waco's '37 team being really something. This one isn't quite there, and it sucks that so many of their best players are out of commission, while Boston is at near full strength. We just have to put our own best foot forward on offense, and hope maybe a QB controversy over there is distracting them!
GPwise, we're just going to go with Rex here. I'm no longer confident I'd gain much by doing otherwise (ask anyone in the CyFL, hah), and while I was away Rex did a monster job for us in the two playoff games we played. So, I'm all for more of that!
Good luck to Rob, and I'm sorry we found our way here again.
So here we are again Rob, your Waco Warhawks have made it to their fifth title game in five seasons. Congratulations. Tell us about your season.
How does this Waco team compare to your previous Bowl finalists in the last few years?
Thank you.
I think that this is the weakest group out of my five AC Championship teams. We had a lot of vets take rating hits in the preseason and we have sustained a lot of significant injuries throughout the season.
Did you have any worries with your uncharacteristic slow start to the campaign? How did you turn your season around?
We entered the season hoping to run Quicksand's "Quack Attack" offense for the entire season. One of the reasons for this was that our new starting QB Herman Pritchett knows all but one of the formations used in that gameplan.
We got off to a slow start at 1-3 and had a 4-5 record after nine games. The gameplan was working on offense but we were really struggling on defense.
We then decided to change our offensive gameplan based on our opponent each week and to rex our defensive gameplan. Since then we have won nine straight games.
You are known in Waco as one of the best offensive minded teams in the OSFL in recent seasons with the strength being your receivers. You have
mixed things up under center this season with Herman Pricthett and Jarrod Gaddy. Have you settled on a QB for the Bowl Game?
Yes. We will be starting Pritchett. Gaddy has had a very strong season and has been part of two playoff wins but we feel that Pritchett provides us with a better matchup against Boston.
After moving on from QB Luther Lyon, do you feel Herman Pritchett is the man to lead this team for the foreseeable future?
We really liked Luther Lyon. He did a great job for us and it was hard to let him go. It worked out well for us because we were still able to solidify our QB depth chart with the acquisition of Gaddy after his release from Brooklyn.
We signed Pritchett to a 5 year contract extension this offseason because we believe that he is a a championship caliber quarterback. Being drafted in the 7th round, I believe that he is the best draft pick I have ever made.
Who else from your team deserves praise this season?
Other than both QB's, four players have really stood out this year:
Both running backs Pirrup & McQuitty both outperformed their ratings and provided us with a solid running game in the second half of the season. Also on offense, center Myron O'Donnell really stepped up and played will filling in while we have had a lot of injuries to our O-line. On defense, Reginald Brandon looks like he is our franchise DE of the future. He can really get after the quarterback and we feel that he will be ready to take over for Gabe Shaver when the time comes.
Tell us about your opponent in the 2041 Bowl Game, Boston, a team you know all too well from previous seasons. Is revenge on your mind from last
seasons defeat?
I do want revenge. I am really disappointed that Lyon had a 121.7 QB rating in last year's bowl game and he didn't get the win.
How do you feel you can hurt them? Are there any weaknesses on defense that you will be looking to exploit?
Boston is a great team and they don't have many weaknesses. Aston has done a great job of building a core and then adding established vets on on year deals around them. He always has a great roster. I know that last year he played a lot of pass defense against us. Maybe we will try and run the ball and control the clock against them.
Thanks Rob and good luck in the Bowl Game.
Thanks. I think that I may need a lot of luck in this one. While we may have the cohesion edge, Boston has a better overall roster and is much healthier than we are. I predict a 31-17 win for Boston. Hopefully I am wrong.
I was very surprised with Erickson's struggles considering how dominant he was in the previous two playoff games. Amos Wedeman came up huge with 3 INT's in a Cannida-like performance. This season has really opened my eyes to how important a high INT bar is for cornerbacks.
Our team is aging and we have a lot of tough decisions to make this upcoming offseason. We have also traded many of our future draft picks away.
Thanks to Rush_27 and King Kosar for setting this up. I think it is a great idea and it gives some good insight into what the bowl participants are thinking heading into the game.
Congratulations Rob and unlucky Aston. Well done on a great season, both of you. Glad you liked the write up, maybe we could do something similar next season.
Now we gotta knock those pesky Warhawks off their perch
