I agree, garion. Unfortunately, I don't feel confident enough in Pleasant to take a lot of downfield shots. I think I am throwing 15% long passes on 1 and 10 in this game, which is a little low, but not too bad.
If I had a QB that had a better Avoid INT and a better offensive line, I'd surely be throwing 20-30% long passes with these 3 WRs (don't forget Baker, who is certainly no slouch).
Also, as far as the regular season... I understand the weaknesses of my team, defense and lack of a running game. I assume most teams are going to try to stop the pass, and also run the ball a lot against me to keep those guys off the field. So, in return, my goal is to try to control the clock with short passes. With those WRs, they can still break a big one. But, this improves my chances of success against pass defenses and specifically zones, and decreases my chances of turnovers. Because of my WR corps being so good, I'm going to be successful with this, and at the same time be able to protect my defense a little bit.
As for our game specifically, I actually expected to run the ball more than we did. My 1st and 10 was 45% run, 40% short and 15% long. All my other down and distance, in this case, are roughly based off that setup. The fact that I threw a LOT more than ran was not part of the plan. Basically, in this particular game, I was sure I could score 20+ points. My goal was to try to find a way to give up 20 or less points, by controlling the ball and focusing on stopping the pass on defense, which is our team's weakness. Unfortunately, the short passing game still yielded 4 INT, which basically was the difference in the game. My offense needs more players to be successful, but it all starts with a QB that doesn't turn the ball over. With the right QB, this team can be an offensive juggernaut... considering we were 3rd, I think, in point scored... this is saying something :)
Anyway, I need to improve my pass defense and get a QB who won't turn the ball over this offseason. If I can get a better RB and offensive line also, my team should be considered a Bowl contender. With just the improved pass defense and careful QB, SMD should be considered a regular playoff contender, even in the super competitive NC East. This year, I think we lived and died on our passing game, which is not a good thing in the long term.
