  • Veteran GM's Your teams draft Bust

If you veterans can remember what positions have you had the biggest 1st rd draft bust. I would think it would be QB or RB both 2 spots I am needing to improve badly. I am hoping by seeing this it will help some of us new guys avoid a bust but I know it is going to happen to everyone occasionally. I am also guessing that OL has the least chance of being a bust. Anyway thanks guys.

This probably won't help you, but look at my QB that I drafted, Dan Leoni. He's a bust that I don't see VOL affecting. To me it's a bust, but in reality, it may not be, because I don't think I interviewed him.

If you want to get better, I'd say follow some rules of thumb.
    1) Check statics.
    2) Compare combines to what you expect bars to be.
    3) Interview carefully.
    4) ???

I don't think I've ever been hit by a volatility bust (i.e, pure random chance) in the 1st round. Part of that is I've only made 4 first round picks in the FOF7 era total. It seems to be dicey!

I've made some bad calls before, though. Probably too many to count. I once went for this TE with sweet combines at 1.7 in the CFL, and he ended up being a good 60ish player, but relatively useless because he only had middling Route Running ability, and I had some nice receivers already. So he sat there catching 35 balls for 450 yards for a few seasons, and was traded before his $7.5M-a-year rookie deal was up.

The guy who traded for him really loves his TEs and focused on them. One year at his peak, he had 113 targets. 681 yards and 53 catches. His career target % was 15% and that never changed too much.

I had a 1.3 OT who had 3 red combines that I moved way up to get. He looked to have maxed out bars, 3 red and the rest blue combine numbers. He ended up 25/25. His volatility was mid 90s.

For many seasons after that, I stayed away from high volatility guys in the first round. I also think that was the only big volatility bust I have had. I had several bad picks too, that I consider busts... But not because of volatility... Just because I made a bad decision.

I did some experimentation with volatility a few years ago. VSOD can hit players who have 0 volatility, too. There is a small difference in chance but personally I do not think it is enough to change any decisions. Maybe if you have to decide between two players and need a tie-breaker.

Yeah I agree. I don't shy away from high volatility guys any more. I was just very frustrated and a little shell shocked after that.

Uh I just remember QB Leroy Chustz... Holly shit, he put our franchise down for a couple of years... Number #3 Overall selection, with sweet combines and sweet bars, canīt understand why he dropped that much

Anyway now we have our own Russell Wilson leading the O# and Chustz is no longer in our minds... Sad Draft...

I drafted three DEs this year, and inhereted a first and a second round selection at the position and none of them are even sniffing 40 overall.

If you consider the position the player was drafted, probably my current DE Bryan Conaty. He was a combine monster who didn't live up to his combines.

My first draft pick ever in multiplayer 1.11 was a receiver named Grant Giefeke. I pretty much didn't know what I was doing when I made that pick. He was just average. :)

Otherwise it was a 1.26 receiver named Moe Zimmerman. Something like 10 total catches in his career. I had coveted another receiver Rico Knight and when he was taken I picked on need (reaching) and got a mediocre WR.

Rico Knight broke a bunch of hearts when I picked him. The best!

I can honestly say that I haven't had any 1st round draft busts during my ten seasons of drafts in this league.

I have however made some very poor 2nd round picks. One year I missed my pick and I had my priority list set to best combine numbers and I drafted this terrible Guard in the 2nd round that I never ended up signing (rookie signings were not automatic in the previous version of the game). It also looks like Toby Manning, my 2nd round pick from this year was a big bust. He went 79 to 34 in preseason.
