At #16 Utah makes a solid pick with all world MLB Tracy Givens. Givens is blessed with exceptional speed at the position and showed great instincts in college. A true coach on the field, Givens will bring stability to the Utah defense from day one. What makes Givens even more special is his speed he displays at 264 lbs. He is an effective blitzer and has an uncanny sense of when to 'go' by picking up opposing signal callers tendencies.

The knock on Givens is his run stopping ability. Givens is not your classic 'stack and shed' Mike. He would flourish in a system that used it's tackles to occupy blockers allowing him to use his speed and superior instincts to make plays. Givens will always stick to his assignments but won't always make the play one on one.

At 17 we see what could be our first reach in the first round. Waco goes with hit or miss prospect Jimmy Mayes at the MLB position. Mayes is undersized for the position clocking in at 224 lbs. At South Florida Mayes was the anchor of a porous defense. Mayes did display superior run stopping ability and was a lights out punishing hitter, with big play ball stripping ability. He also fared well against the opponents tight end in coverage. But there are question marks.

Mayes elected to hold private workouts instead of attending the combine and some scouts came away with the impression that the kid was a bit arrogant. Mayes needs to work on conditioning and develop a better understanding of the game to put all the pieces together.
