I remember Nix (the previous PXT owner) changed a late 1st round Guard to Tackle in the old PFL and it worked out great. I think the guy ended up being rated in the high 70's and actually went up after the switch.

Hmm, guess it was just always that Gs tended to be the wrong weight/height for a good change to tackle then.

(in the old game, may have changed, may not) -- you had a certain amount of leeway in position changes during the rookie year only (not sure if pre TC made a difference) for moving OL around. Guards that were the right weight for example, could move to tackle without penalty, and same for RT to LT -- which never applied to veterans.

I don't believe there was ever an 'increase in ratings possible' message for these moves. If a player had better OVR as a tackle, it was because his bar ratings worked out better in OT overall calculations, which weighted Pass Block more heavily.

Also, in MP you never quite knew for sure what your player would turn out as on the other side of an iffy position switch. You had to wait for the next sim to come to find out. However, the % of ratings retained you're quoted (or 'increase in ratings') was a good guide. If you're being told the guy will retain only 70% of his ratings, he's going to lose a lot of bars after the sim even though you can't see it on your end until then.
