I was a little hoping we could put on a lopsided show of it, but this one quickly devolved into a brutal slugfest. The Totems indulged in their favorite pastime — picking off Randy Boone — early, with three first half interceptions. The Bees crawled back to take the lead when Dakota couldn't capitalize quite enough, and returned the favor by intercepting Douglas on three straight second half drives.
Dakota scored late to bring it within 3, but couldn't recover the onside kick with twenty seconds left in the game.
Game notes....
Dakota landed in eight 2nd and 1-5 plays, and threw passes six times. Oops.
Utah had only four 3rd-and-8+ plays, while Dakota had nine.
Utah had nine 1st/2nd and 10+ plays, and Dakota had six. Both teams kept falling behind schedule.
Stevens Cup MVP Will Tyler (WLB) notches 1 sack, 5 hurries, and 2 knockdowns of Dakota's Brian Douglas
Will Duckworth was held to 15 carries for 29 yards, but Dakota still had success on the ground early. Malcolm Rowland was rarely stopped.
Bob Hansen indeed got taken out of the game, but TEs Blades and Summers combined for a pretty solid day.
CBs Chris Hutchins (2) and Claude Race (1) had Dakota's INTs, while Utah's went to CB Bobby Plantilla, SS Butch McKinnon, and ILB Floyd Follette.
Some really good kick returning by both teams, but Damon Earp (2 for 21) had a solid edge on PR over Malcolm Rowland (2 for -3).
Dakota MVPs: Malcolm Rowland, Chris Hutchins.
GG, Foos! Always fun. Very impressive job with Dakota this season. Good luck navigating the NC gauntlet in the coming years...and watch out for that Brooklyn fellow.
Man, Utah, your team has so many weapons and you gameplan so well around them that it's hard to stop! I've never faced a team with such a combination of a good GM, good players and the ability to maximize every player at every position. Utah earned every bit of the amazing run they've been on in OSFL. Honestly, I'm amazed that I managed to contain your team as much as I did!
Thought we might have a chance while our defense was doing its magic, but we really didn't get enough pressure on Boone and the Bees seemed to get a LOT of pressure on Douglas, despite missing Ike Arias. I guess the FB + TE staying in to block didn't help much. Interestingly, Shepherd was more of a factor in the passing game than he usually is even though he was set at 100 stay in to block at TE. I guess he's the primary receiver in a lot of plays that were run? That is odd since he wasn't targeted much in season when he was not held in to block. Then again, we have some decent receivers and his RR isn't that high.
The thing that really killed us was Douglas throwing those three consecutive interceptions on drives in the 2nd half. I thought we'd have some success passing against Utah's secondary, but I underestimated them and even though I thought I might have overestimated the Utah pass rush they contributed to Douglas' woes.
I'm glad I got a bowl win in before the Utah juggernaut really got rolling! Otherwise I'd be heading into Buffalo Bills/Minnesota Vikings territory!
gg, Nutah! You are a heck of a GM and a class act to boot!
P.S. I've been waiting for Brooklyn to cause me Boston level problems, and I have a feeling he'll be fulfilling that role next year! Anyone in my division feels like moving to a new team in another division, feel free, NC North is too tight. :)
I'm just blown away that in a league full of human owners one person can dominate so much. Even the guy who simmed 10,000 seasons and is in cahoots with the developer couldn't put it together like this.
I wasn't the first! That Firefly guy made ten straight in the vNFL House, back in the day. Sometimes the stars just align, and align and align ;) We've had our share of close calls, too. It just kept turning up roses for Utah in the end.
Okay, an announcement: I'm going to step down as Utah GM. Best wishes and thanks to all for making the OSFL great. I've made a detailed final report of the team here for the next guy's amusement, but other than that, I guess I'm closing up shop!
Most importantly, though it's that time of year again — to give BradZ some love for being the awesome commish that he is, and for how he manages to post his sims with machine-like regularity while still keeping all you jokers in line. Seriously, great job, Brad. You keep this league going for everyone and it's not easy. Good luck with the migration.
Seriously, bummed about this, but when you've learned a game backwards and forwards who wouldn't want to quit before all your knowledge becomes stripped away in the new version.
