Oh no, I don't think there's anything wrong with being on the clock for 72 hours or even 120 hours. Real life definitely gets in the way and should be everyone's priority. Completely understandable.
It's just, if the slow roll takes a week and gets through only ten picks. The luxury of it is then afforded to an arbitrary but small set of us - through nobody's fault but the system's - and everyone else (including our overseas and Hawaiian compadres ) is then left to the whims of the 3-hour clock. Meanwhile everyone's already more or less been asked to check in daily (just in case they might be on the clock that day), every day for the past week. That's a hell of a lot to ask and most don't get around to it, understandably.
But yeah, that was just a loony idea off the top of my head. It has its weaknesses too and let's just see how the status quo plays out.
The thing is when you're on the clock (but its a slow roll) you have the time to think about the pick or trades. If you're not doing either of those then its kinda pointless having the slow roll. People have to just wait until the official start, just as they would if we didn't start early.
When you're on the clock officially you just make a list if you can't be around. For some reason people don't do this on an unofficial clock.
I like the unofficial time, but if we could just encourage a list it would make a big difference.

San Francisco is on the clock. If their owner would hurry up the Spanish Shark can pick and go to bed. Think of the puppies! I hear that SF owner is a slacker though. 39 hour wait here we come!
