I mean, in the unlikely event you have a guy you want to release, but he's on a 3 year deal with $X amount of bonus.
Release him now and your 2024 cap hit is $x/3, your 2025 cap hit is $2x/3, and your 2026 cap hit is $0.
Release him in the offseason and your 2025 cap hit is less, but your 2026 cap hit is nonzero. So if you aren't worried about your cap situation in 2025, you can make sure you don't start piling on the penalty in a later year...but as it turned out garion just didn't want UFA leaders cluttering up his roster, which I didn't think of.
