  • FA Offers - POLL

    A few choices here:

    1) Status quo, Grey Sheet rule stays in effect
    2) 3 year minimum offers during FA 1
    3) Hybrid, 3 year minimum if $$ per season > $1mil, 1 year deals OK if contract offered is <= $1mil

Option 3 allows short term contracts for aging vets at veteran minimums rather than forcing them to wait on the sidelines until FA2, or forcing a team to give a 3 year deal to those types of guys.

Brad, I am not sure option 3 makes sense with 1 million as the magic number. At least, it will not make sense very shortly as the seasons go by and minimum salary demands exceed $1mil (if they haven't already). That is a creative approach, but I think there has to be a better way of setting the boundary line.

I guess I'm picturing the 8 year veteran TE who is only asking for a 1 year deal. I'm not sure we should force him to sit around until FA2 just so someone can offer him his 1 year deal. Not sure what that $$ amt is, but that part is negotiable.

I'm guessing the option 3 people would choose option 2 if forced to choose between only 2 options...

So we don't hurt their feelings? :)

Seriously, though, why is that a bad thing? FA1 should be for the superstars, then FA2 for the roster-fillers, aging vets, mentors, etc.

Yeah, I was trying to think of a nice way for option 3 to work. I think it's easiest to go with option 2 over option 3 (or status quo over option 3), just because either is less complicated. For that 8th year vet TE, someone else said this before, and they are right: a 3-year deal won't be a lot more bonus than a 1-year deal.

Voted 3 but 3 is just part of 2 so add those #'s for the final votes.

I say this as someone who voted for rule changes in each case, but with both votes as tight as they are, status quo is probably for the best, for this year.

I think some good points have been raised in favor of each rule change though and we should revisit these issues in the next offseason, and keep an eye on them over the course of this one.

That's where I'm at. I think there's certainly a heightened awareness, but we may need to observe for the year now that it's part of the discussion.

Due to the close nature of the vote on this issue we will stick with the status quo for one more season at least. I'd like to keep an open dialogue on this issue for the remainder of this season and revisit towards the end of the year heading into 2020. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and opinions. Anyone who feels strongly about this issue, feel free to continue lobbying for your position in advance of the next vote.
