I did a mock draft that year....
1.Mississippi Storm
Joaquin “Grumpy” Gonzalez – RHSP – The Colony, Texas
The Storm land the best starting pitcher in the draft. Gonzalez is armed with a fastball that hits 101 mph on the radar gun, a hard moving slider, and a devastating change-up that he has complete control over. Expansion teams need a star to be developing right away, and Gonzalez is can't miss. Grumpy turns 20 next week, and could be in the majors sooner than later.
2.Indianapolis Clowns
Don Stevens – RHSP – Cleveland, Ohio
Following the lead of its expansion counter-part the Clowns land “the other” super star starting pitcher. Stevens is only 16, but he has the potential to be a #1 starter for the Clowns.
3.California Wildfire
Victor “Slider” Gonzalez – 3B – Washington D.C.
Slider is a short (5'8), stocky (200lbs), 16-year-old third basemen with a power bat. Landing Gonzalez would give the Wildfire another slugger to man the other corner of the infield opposite 1981 first round pick, 1B Steve Boyd.
4.Philadelphia Freedom
Raul Carillo – RHSP – Atlanta, Georgia
The Freedom franchise already has three of best starting pitching prospects in the game in Joe Aurillo, Rayman Minnoz, and Dave Sievewright, so adding another could give them one of the best rotations in league in a few years. Carillo is a big (6'5 220lbs) southern kid armed with a nasty splitter and a devastating curveball.
5.Pawtucket Patriots
Dani Alvarez – 1B – Washington, D.C.
The Patriots already have a power-hitting 1B in the big leagues, maybe you have heard of him, Pedro Eires. The problem is, Eires isn't getting any younger, and his contract extension that he signed in 1981, ends right about the time that Alvarez will be ready to be the full-time 1B.
6.Virginia Colonials
Yoritoki Maeda – 3B – Hiroshima, Japan
Maeda the Japanese sensation is a 5-tool player. He has a rocket arm at 3B, hits for power with a great eye, and he has speed. The kid won't turn 17 until November, so he will be a project, but Virginia has plenty of time to wait.
7.Syracuse Slammers
Jud Graham – RHRP – Campbell, Missouri
Some people believe Graham is a middle reliever. Others believe he is a closer. Some believe he could be a starter. The kid is a do-it-all pitcher and would be a great pick for the Slammers this far down.
8.Dallas Snappers
Doug Day – RHSP – Immokalee, Florida
Another 16-year-old starting pitcher. The Snappers have a bunch of top prospects. Very few of them, are pitchers.
9. Davenport Brawlers
Robby Shannon - 1B - Oskaloosa, Iowa
Let the rebuilding project begin! Davenport started unloading players for picks and prospects this past season, including superstar first baseman Toby Rochester. Shannon is a big first baseman who will put up numbers right away in the minors.
10. Hyundai Dinos
Miguel Angel Padilla - OF - Dothan, Alabama
The Hyundai Dinos' star outfielder Enéas Monterola, will turn 36 at years end. Padilla, a future power hitting outfielder, will turn 17 at years end. You get the picture.
11. Davenport Brawlers
Anibal "Zombie" Rivera - RHRP - Sanchez Ramirez, Dominican Republic
After taking a hitter at nine, the Brawlers land arguably the best closer prospect in the draft. Rivera's fastball reaches 99 mph and his slider doesn't know when to stop moving.
12. Hartford Whalers
Don Rice - LHSP - Chester, Georgia
Hartford's top four prospects are position players. Rice is the first left hander to come off the board, but he brings more to the table than just that. His fastball reaches the mid-90s and he has a great changeup.
13. Pittsburgh Millers
Cy Kirkpatrick - LHRP - Boise City, Idaho
The Miller's franchise has been plagued with poor pitching for years. Plus, their top prospects are hitters. Kirkpatrick is young, and won't be in the show for awhile, but some argue he has the best stuff of all left-handers in the draft.
14. Los Lunas Javelinas
Pat Hamilton - 1B - Culver City, California
Hamilton is one of the older players to be selected at this point, as he turns 21 next week. Hamilton could be in the show soon with an immediate future at DH or 1B.
15. Denver Bulls
Chet Reed - C - Lamar, Colorado
Denver elects to take the home-town kid in Reed. The catcher is decent defensively but what he brings his one of the most powerful bats in the draft. He likely won't hit for high average, but if his college numbers are any indication, he might set the homerun record.
16. Baltimore Bulldogs
Ivan Solis - 2B - Columbus, Ohio
Solis is arguably the best second baseman infielder in the draft, and one of the better middle infield hitters. The switch-hitter could also have a future at shortstop.
