This season has presented us with the emergence of a Colossus, the likes of which we have never witnessed. This virtual road grader may have been years in the making, but there’s no mistaking the fact that everything, everything has come together in such a fashion as to present us all with a cataclysmic reckoning from which no one appears safe.
This juggernaut currently owns the following pinball like offensive numbers (BLB wide):
- The best record in the league - 55-21, .724 W%
- The most runs scored - 529 (a full 108 runs more than Pawtucket)
- The most stolen bases - 101 (a full 52 more bags than Washington)
- The most total bases - 1222 (55 more than Maine)
- The best team BAvg - .292 (.011 points clear of Baltimore)
- The best team OBP - .395 (.029 points clear of Baltimore)
- The best team SLG% - .460 (.031 points clear of Maine and Pawtucket)
- The best team OPS - .854 (a full .065 points clear of Baltimore)
- The most bases on balls - 457 (106 more than Philly)
- The least K’s (offense) - 391 (14 fewer than Dallas)
- The second most HRs - 84 (5 behind Maine who has the benefit of a DH)
The 1991 Virginia Colonials are on pace to set many offensive (pun intended) League records, but the two most important are directly related to winning baseball games:
The five highest seasons of Run Differential in league history:

Virginia’s 1991 Runs Scored (through 76 games) - 529 for 6.96 per game (On pace for 1128)
The numbers are such that the rest of the league should consider relegating themselves to a lesser league or promoting the Colonials to a higher stage where they will no longer be able to inflict their wrath on their hapless adversaries.
The sum of its parts may not even do its individual players justice. Currently there are 13 position players in the league that sport a VORP of 30+. Virginia employs nearly a third of them - 4 (Woodbury - 65.4, Chavez - 38.4, Gremades - 37.7, Phillips - 35.4). All 8 of their regular position players own VORPs in double digits (the lowest, Yoritoki Maeda, “only” comes in at 13.9).
Woodbury is getting better and more durable with age. Gremades is still the Gremades. The other key members of the lineup are young pups: Chavez - 23, Phillips - 26, Maeda - 25, OF Jerry Daly - 21. The future is bright in Virginia and the present is supernova-ish. May God have mercy on our souls.
Oh, and did I mention they can pitch a little too?
