The Philadelphia Freedom organization is going to try to start a new tradition of handing out Regular Season team awards to the best position player, best pitcher and best newcomer (either trade acquisition, Free Agent, or rookie who makes the most impact) at the end of each season. The honorees will be chosen by club management and the awards will be bestowed on the recipients during the playoffs each year. This year’s winners are:
Most Outstanding Player
Geoff Scott
Scott set an incredibly high bar for himself with his 1989 historic season, one which was virtually impossible to surpass in 1990. Things didn’t click for Scott the same way this season as they did last year, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that even in a “down” year he was simply one of the best players in the league.

Most Outstanding Pitcher
Doug “Light” Miles
Miles arrived in 1990. After putting together a respectable rookie campaign in 1989 as a 21 year old, Miles lived up to the high expectations of the organization this season. We put a lot on his shoulders in 1990, asking him to be the Ace of our staff and he proved he was up to the challenge. He was at his best in August and September, so it’s possible there’s still a bit more growth left in him. Here’s hoping.
- 2nd in QS - 21 (Ben Irvin led with 23)
- Winning % of .783 (2nd highest in team history - .957, Aurillo - 1983)
- QS in 70% of starts
- Led team in wins - 18 (3rd highest total in team history)
- First on the team in pitcher VORP (45.4)
- First on the team in strikeouts - 217 (second player in team history to reach the 200+ mark)
- Led team in WHIP (RP and SP) - 1.03
- Led team in K/9 (RP and SP) - 9.8
- Member of 1990 IL All-Star team
- Pitched the first CG Shutout of his career against Batavia - a 3 Hit, 9K effort

Newcomer of the Year Award
Joe Sanchez
Sanchez was trusted with a fairly significant role in our bullpen from the beginning of the year this season and he did not disappoint. An undrafted FA signed in ’86 (thanks, Z) Sanchez made his mark at the BLB level by contributing significant setup innings as a bridge between the starting rotation and the closer. We’ll be depending on Sanchez to play an important role in the ‘pen once again in 1991.
