  • Muckdogs 1990 Farm System Awards

    LINK

The season was by far the most productive in the short history of Batavia's farm teams as all three teams finished in 1st place. All though no championship's were won it does give the Batavia fans and front office a glimmer of hope down the line. We'd now like to award the top overall players of the Muckdogs minor league organization.

    Hitter of the Year

    Shawn Ray - Player Page

The Muckdogs seem to be able to produce 1B in their minor league system which is unfortunate since Raul De Jesus has that position in the BLB locked down for quite a while. Ray was a Round 15 pick in '84 and has slowly climbed his way up the ladder, always playing 1B. After the failed Jud Cobb experiment in outfield the organization has decided to groom Ray for the outfield prior to him being called up. So far not so good. On the hitting side though the guy had a great season. In 122 games at the AAA level he hit .317/.401/.437 with 41 doubles, 5 HR's and 81 RBI's.

    Pitcher of the Year

    - Basil Petrohilos - Player Page

Drafted in the 3rd round of the '88 draft the Muckdogs have always been excited about this young Greek fireballers potential. He started the season in AA and Batavia tried to make him a starter, and the experiment failed badly. After rebounding in the relief role he was moved up to AAA and exploded on scene as a dominant closer. In 36 games he finished the year 2-3 with 19 saves, a 1.73 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 53 K's to 16 walks. He throws a 98 MPH fastball and a wicked curve and has been blessed with the endurance of a starter. If he learns a 3rd pitch watch out. If the baseball gods don't punish Batavia look for Basil to make his BLB debut in '91.

Basil looks filthy McNasty with his stuff. How does a guy like that drop to the 3rd round?

I had to do a double take when I read this though:
08-01-1989 Wins the AA WORT Pitcher of the Month Award.

Unfortunately, good hitting, unathletic hitters that play first base are incredibly easy to develop just like in real life. It's so hard to trade them for value because everyone else has someone that can do the same thing.

I find that my major weaknesses are everyone's weaknesses. It's just about how you can fill that short stop hole or find enough quality arms for the bullpen, or if you have a capable bottom of the rotation. First base? Too easy. Good player though.
