Local Brews
June was a rather pedestrian month compared to the first two of this season. A 16-11 record (.593 winning %) is certainly nothing to take for granted (at this point if we were to play .500 ball the rest of the way, we’d end up with 95-96 wins). There’s still a long way to go and a lot of baseball to be played before this season is up.
A rundown of player highlights from the month of June:
3B Jim Newlin - He’s not having his best season, but he is starting to come around. .340 | .442 | .532 with a team leading 9 2B’s, to go along with 3 HR 15 RBI and 16 runs scored.
2B Geoff Scott - Welcome to the 1990 season Stout Slugger candidate version of Geoff Scott. Before June he was just a really good player version of himself. In June he took off (though still waiting for the power stroke to heat up even though we aren’t that big on the HR ball). .436 | .549 | .596; 19 RBI and 18 runs scored and took home the IL Player of the Month honors.
SP Joe Ponte - I really like Joe. Not the flashiest of guys, but throughout his career he has gone out to the hill when he’s supposed to and has given quality effort and innings. This month, 5 starts, 4 quality starts, 3 wins and no losses and an ERA of 2.52.
SP Ben Irvin - Irvin’s been a bit of a hard luck pitcher this year. Not getting the run support at the right times and June fit that trend. He posted a 2 - 2 record despite authoring 5 quality starts in 5 trips while compiling a 2.70 ERA and recording 34 K in 36.2 IP.
Micro Brews
SP Masaki Kamuta (AA) - Our old scouting director saw something in Kamuta when he was our 1st pick in the 1988 draft (2.18) and he’s starting to slowly creep into that potential. Our new scouting director isn’t as high on him, but the front office is going to continue to keep close tabs on this young RHP to see what he can become. 2-1 | 40.1 IP | 33 HA | 3.12 ERA | 1.04 WHIP | 9.6 K/9. That last number is the one that really has us interested. If he keeps showing that kind of “stuff” then we think his ceiling may be closer to what our old scout saw in him.
These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty!!
A “quick hit” look at goings on around the league in the second month:
06/01 - Right out of the chute, WAS “1B” Robert Abbott etched his name in the BLB record book by recording 6 hits in 7 trips against rival Virginia. All 6 hits were singles and he didn’t drive in any runs, scoring 3 from the leadoff spot.
06/10 - You know you’re an aging ballplayer when every other day it seems you’re reaching a big milestone. A month and a day after hitting career HR number 300, Colonials’ standout Vincent Nino reached another big milestone by scoring the 1,000th run of his career.
06/10 - That very same night, WAS 3B Charlie MacCabe joined that same club, scoring his 1,000th run.
06/10 - On a historically busy evening, CAR OF Britt Bovey watched as another long fly ball cleared the OF wall for the 300th time in his career.
06/22 - In what is quickly becoming a crowded group (4th time this year someone has joined this group), the 300 HR Club welcomed yet another member in DEN 3B Pedron Zamarida.
-IL Pitcher of the Month - BAT CL Ken Bayer - In a surprising development, the Muckdog’s closer won the pitcher of the month award for the IL. Bayer recorded 8 saves in 8 chances with an ERA of 2.63 in 12 games/13.2 IP.
-IL Batter of the Month - PHI 2B Geoff Scott - previously mentioned
-IL Rookie of the Month - WC C Hack Wells - .367 | .438 | .494; 1 HR, 8 RBI and 11 runs scored
-DL Pitcher of the Month - SYR SP Brian Hanrahan - 5-0; 1.47 ERA, 29 K in 36.2 IP
-DL Batter of the Month - PAW C Hector Gonzalez - Gonzalez produced a .317 | .470 | .683 line for June with: 11 HR, 32 RBI and 30 runs scored in 28 games.
-DL Rookie of the Month - PAW CF Samuel Helmrich - There’s something brewing in Pawtucket and everyone around the organization are starting to feel it. .397 | .479 | .540; 12 RBI and 13 runs scored
Broken Taps
June 1 - Young, promising OF Dani Munoz of WIL was lost for the month (5 weeks to be exact) due to recurring back spasms.
June 2 - OF Jerry Ward of Windy City broke his wrist and will miss a month and a half.
June 9 - MIS RHP Gervasio Areas was lost for the rest of the season with a torn elbow ligament.
June 17 - DAV OF Victorio Vasquez was expected to miss 7 weeks after tweaking a hamstring
June 19 - CAR SP Joe Guaina, who was rumored to be on the trade block at the time, was lost for a year after blowing out his elbow. At the age of 38, it was more than likely the last time he’ll step foot on the mound in the BLB
June 20 - CAL C Jared Austin will miss 6 weeks with a strained hammy
June 20 - BAT OF Ruben Marin is expected to miss 4 months with a torn labrum
June 20 - Not a good day for the Porter. PHI OF [B[Pat Gibson[/B] suffered a fractured wrist and was expected to miss 5 weeks
June 20 - Davenport lost SP Rayford Winchel for a month with biceps tendonitis
June 21 - Everardo Gremades of Virginia went down for 5 weeks with a broken wrist. No actual cause of the injury was immediately available, but let’s just say Guitar Hero won’t be invented for another decade + and it appears to be a repetitive motion injury
June 23 - Can someone just give poor Wilton Harcourt the rest of his money and let the guy retire in peace? Broken knee cap, 7-8 months.
June 24 - SP Jerome Middlebrooks will be out 3-4 months with a partially torn labrum
