Local Brews
Well, if we can continue stringing together 18 win months we’ll be just fine. An 18-10 month in May suits us nicely, especially when a 4 game sweep of VIR to end the month made it possible. We weren’t nearly as dominant as we were during the first month of the season, but that first season was just ridiculous.
We’re still waiting for Geoff Scott to really heat up (he’s on pace for a rather pedestrian season, with a projected VORP of “only” 77.5), but if the rest of the guys in the lineup continue to pitch in their share we should be OK.
A rundown of player highlights from the month of May:
OF O.T. - This is what we saw when we made the Woodbury deal. He still hasn’t shown the power profile that we think he eventually will, but he is producing runs by taking advantage of all those guys above him in the order that are getting on base at a lofty clip. .333 | .361 | .523; 10 2B, 3 HR, and 31 RBI.
OF Pat Gibson - Gibson continued a strong start to the season by putting together a solid May. Like I said last month, he doesn’t profile to be able to hit for average, but he gets on base, drives in runs and tends to hit the ball hard when he does make contact. .257 | .350 | .495; led the team with 5 HR and was second in RBI with 16.
SP Doug “Light” Miles - Looks like he’s getting it. We took some lumps with him last year as he got his feet wet in the BLB, but now he’s turning into the top of the rotation arm we were hoping for. 5 Wins against 1 Loss, striking out a batter per IP (41 K | 40.2 IP).
Micro Brews
1B Pancho “Chew” Baca (AA) - I just don’t know what to make of Baca. The guy has been on some type of tear since last year. For May he hit .410 | .473 | .462, and actually lowered his numbers for the season in each of those categories. He rang up a total of 48 base hits.
OF Glen Padgett (AA/AAA)- .362 | .417 | .564; 4 HR, 27 RBI and 23 runs scored. He’s been bumped up to AAA where we hope he is able to compete for the rest of the year and probably next year as well.

A “quick hit” look at goings on around the league in the second month:
- VIR 1B Vincent Nino joined the 300 HR club (6th player to achieve the milestone) about 3 weeks after teammate Mel Woodbury did so in April.
- Hitman Subaru Hiraki (OF - Los Alamos) became the 4th BLB player to reach 2,000 career hits.
- VIR “OF” Evarardo Gremades became the 5th member of the 2,000 hit club 12 days later.
-IL Pitcher of the Month - WC SP Dunmore Theodore - Another 4-0 month that was a virtual carbon copy of his first month which won him this same honor. Theodore was recently traded to PIT and is stuck at 199 wins for the Windy City franchise.
-IL Batter of the Month - WAS C Mike Murdock - This kid is something else. .392 | .459 | .753; 7 HR, 28 RBI and 21 runs scored.
-IL Rookie of the Month - DAV 1B/OF Don Hudson - .276 | .323 | .483; 4 HR, 25 RBI and 9 runs scored
-DL Pitcher of the Month - HAR SP Anselmo Mapalo - 5-1; 1.39 ERA as the 37 year old starter continues to get things done
-DL Batter of the Month - HAR SS Manny Rivera - Good month for the HAR boys. Rivera produced a .381 | .462 | .611 line for May with: 5 HR, 22 RBI and 25 runs scored.
-DL Rookie of the Month - HYU C Art Short - .263 | .344 | .509; 3 HR and 11 RBI
Broken Taps
May 6 - WAS lost CL Roger Simonds for the majority of the rest of the season with a torn triceps muscle
May 8 - The oft-injured Don McGuire of MAI was lost for 5-6 weeks due to a strained oblique
May 19 - DEN 1B Eddie O’Fallon will miss the rest of the season after breaking a bone in his elbow. The 35 year old hasn’t had more than 431 AB’s in the last 3 years.
May 22 - BAT SP Nakazo Sasaki will miss 2 months after straining an oblique
May 23 - SP Lonnie Coleman of Sin City will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder issue. Coleman is best remembered for his surprising start in the 1 game playoff for Virginia at the end of the ’88 season.
May 24 - 1B Ruben Sanchez of the Clowns suffered a sprained knee and was expected to miss 5-6 weeks
May 27 - Windy City OF Brent Nichol was expected to miss 4 months after breaking his hand
May 28 - SS Ivan Solis of Davenport pulled his groin while running the bases (an FCC investigation is pending to determine if any lewd act occurred) and will keep him on the shelf for 6 weeks
May 28 - Dallas lost the services of OF Jong-ho Mun for 2-3 months after he was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome
May 29 - Windy City saw SP Jim Fletcher go down with a ruptured finger tendon which will keep the veteran lefty out of action for 4 months
