    Local Brews

And thus ends what has to be one of the best months in franchise history. We sported an 18-3 record, fifteen games above .500. We didn’t suffer our typical slow start offensively and the pitching staff has been rock solid. We scored 6.14 runs per game and allowed 3.57. That’s certainly a recipe for success.

Obviously we can’t sustain this pace all season long, but getting off to such a good start and getting 18 wins in the bank is certainly preferable to our traditional 10 or 11 win Aprils.

A rundown of player highlights from the month of April:

OF Pat Gibson - Led the team with 22 April RBI’s and produced a line of .278 | .407 | .417 . He doesn’t have the contact skill to ever hit for a high average, but with more and more experience he becomes a very useful player. He drew 16 BB in April, second on the team to the walk machine known as Geoff Scott.

2B Geoff Scott - You can’t really be disappointed with Scott’s April, but it wasn’t Stout Slugger worthy, just really good. Scott batted .341 | .471 | .512 and plated 11 RBI while scoring a team leading 20 runs. The power hasn’t shown up so far this year (2 HR), but it will.

1B Joe Seagarra - A key reason we got off to such a quick start this season. He’s been fairly absent the last few Aprils, but this season he was a huge contributing factor to our overall increase in run production that has put us at the top of the Porter. Batting .341 | .434 | .459 for April, he drove in 14 runs and scored 19.

SS Raul Carbajal - The experience gained in last year’s campaign seems to have done the trick. He produced a line of .329 | .409 | .463 and has been a key catalyst at the top of the lineup (20 runs scored and a team leading 9 doubles).

SP Joe Ponte - He had to wait until the final day of the month to finally record a decision, but he gave us 4 quality starts in 4 games and posted an ERA of 1.80 for the month. Averaged 7+ IP per start for the month.

    Micro Brews

OF Glen Padgett (AA) - Brought over from the Washington organization in the deal that keeps on giving (Joe Alveraz), our scout was initially really high on Padgett and then drastically downgraded him after getting a closer look over the first half of ’89. It appears now that he may end up somewhere between the two scouting reports, which could still make him a useful BLB player someday. For the time being, he’s plying his craft in AA and is off to a grand start in ’90. A line of .400 | .460 | .727 with 5 doubles, 2 3B and 3 HR; 14 RBI and 13 runs scored. All that despite missing a week plus with a thumb injury.

SP Masaaki Kamuta (AA)- Our first pick in the 1988 draft (18th pick of the second round), Kamuta produced a 1st month that we hope shows signs of developing into a future useful #3-4 type arm. He posted a 2.93 ERA, a 2-0 record and is finally starting to show the stuff that our scouts see in him (7.8 K/9 after only a 5.32 K/9 rate last season).

These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty!!

A “quick hit” look at goings on around the league in the first month:

    - VIR OF Mel Woodbury punched his ticket into the 300 HR club (5th player to achieve the milestone)

    - Denver 1B Eddie O’Fallon became the 3rd BLB player to reach 2,000 career hits.

-IL Pitcher of the Month - WC SP Dunmore Theodore - the old man still has something left in the tank, going 4-0, 1.78 ERA and registering 34K in 35.1 IP.

-IL Batter of the Month - VIR OF Mel Woodbury - One of the most feared sluggers in the league. He’s just so dominant and so consistent. 9 HR, 32 RBI and 24 runs scored; .342 | .448 | .808

    -IL Rookie of the Month - BAT OF Jong-min Park - .319 | .355 | .556; 3 HR, 15 RBI and 10 runs scored

-DL Pitcher of the Month - MAI SP Tino Suarez - 4 starts, 4 wins; 0.83 ERA and 35 K in 32.2 IP

-DL Batter of the Month - DEN 3B Pedro Zamarida - Maybe it’s just me, but I think Zamarida is the most underappreciated player in the BLB. This guy just produces solid season after solid season, but he doesn’t seem to get much pub. Maybe DEN needs to hire a PR firm. .358 | .447 | .654; 6 HR, 22 RBI and 23 runs scored

    -DL Rookie of the Month - HYU C Art Short - .263 | .344 | .509; 3 HR and 11 RBI

    Broken Taps

    - MIS 3B Wilton Harcourt who once suffered one of the most famous injuries in league history, missed the entire first month of this season with an elbow injury. (4/10)

    - Outstanding pitching prospect Shawn Mills (Windy City) suffered a torn rotator cuff and will miss the first 4 months of the season. (4/11)

    - SYR lost RP Marv Breese for 3-4 weeks after reporting a tweaked back to the training staff. (4/11)

    - Wilmington lost SP Jeff Flynn for 8 weeks with a strained oblique. (4/16)

    - MIS OF Joe Cuevas gambled in the offseason by signing a 1 year FA contract in the hopes that he could produce a nice season and try to cash in 1 more time before the end of his career. Missing the next 2 months with an injury was not on his agenda. Hamstring strain (4/20)

    - All-world SP Teagan Corrigan will miss 6-7 weeks with a barking elbow (4/21)

    - Davenport’s rotation has a hole to fill after losing Jerry Sizemore to a torn UCL (4/29). He’ll miss the rest of the season and will rehab in an effort to get back within a year after Tommy John surgery.

That new offseason philosophy sure did work in Philly.

I can't remember who it was but somebody on the boards or through a PM mentioned that I have to be careful with Sizemore pitching as many innings as he did at a young age.

He didn't have the best ratings to begin with and this injury could be the final straw.

It's still the same philosophy, just not as much to be done this offseason since the seismic shift had already taken place over the previous two.

What I like about Brad is how quickly he took a good team, dismantled it, and rebuilt it in his image.

Denver had three losing seasons when I did that. Philly just skipped back into contention.
