Like any other year, springtime in Batavia is full of hope. After last years 75-87 record, Batavia's 5th straight season with total wins in the 70's, is this the year they can get to the .500 hump? If so the pitchers are going to need to step up their game. Last season they lead the league in walks and the overall staffs ERA of 4.37 was the worst in team history.
SP Nakazo Sasaki - "Chuckwagon" is the pride and joy of the Batavia pitching staff. A home grown prospect who has, and hopefully will, pitch his whole career in Batavia. The last two season have been losing records which weren't his fault, so hopefully with some better offense and fielding he can finish above .500 this season.
SP Carl Pateshall - "Pitbull" comes to Batavia via the FA market. Last year in Washington he was 20-5 with a 3.04 ERA. Obviously the Bats are a superior team to the Muckdogs, but the hope is he can continue his solid play and finally give Batavia a solid #2.
SP Nathan Athey - He signed a 4 year/$21 million dollar extension over the off-season and then the scouts said he lost a little in his arm. At only 30 though this guy has always played well in Batavia and is a local fan favorite.
SP Orlan Coronda - The Muckdogs spent $17 million to keep him in Batavia over the next four years and he rewarded them with his worst season on record. There are many prayers at night hoping he turns it around.
SP Chet Stephens - The once and future king was demoted to the bullpen last year and is still mad about it. He's being given another chance to start before he ends up in the pen again, sulking or not.
MR Jeronimo DeLacy - A past Muckdog who plays well in Batavia is back again (and for cheap). Another fan favorite like Athey his jersey is seen all over town.
MR Doug Gallagher - What he lacks in control he makes up with stuff. When this kid is on he can K anyone, when he is off he is often KO'd.
MR Mark Melon/MR Don Jones - The scouts think they are identical which is sad because they both have sub-par control. Just a little more practice hitting their mark by either of them and they become very good pitchers.
CL Ken Bayer - A two time All-Star and two time winner of the Last Call Relief Award, Bayer had a disappointing 2nd half after last years All-Star game debacle. The Batavia pitching staff worked with him all off-season and they are hoping he gets back to his old form.
