Muckdogs 1989 Minor League Award Winners
Pitcher
CL Basil Petrohilos - LINK
Selected with the 9th pick in the 3rd round of the '88 draft this kid was considered a steal by the Batavia scouting coordinator. After a decent showing in '88 he showed great improvement in the off-season but management decided to keep the 19 year old in A ball to start '89. He responded by playing in 23 games and having a 3-2 record with a 2.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 37 K's to 13 BB's. He was moved up to AA ball and given the closer role where he finished the final 25 games of the season with 13 saves, a 1.47 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 34 K's and 12 BB's. For an organization that is in need of players who have a high K/BB ratio he could be pitching in Batavia next season.
Hitter
LF Jong-min Park - LINK
Drafted way back in '85 the once Top 100 prospect slipped back into reality after blowing out his shoulder in '87 and missing half of that season and half of the next. In 1989 though he started out in AA and hit 16 HR's in 97 game and was called up to AAA. He then proceeded to hit 8 HR's in 28 games. Figuring it was now or never the 25 year old was called up in September to the BLB and hit 5 HR's in 25 games before being sent back down at the end of the season. The Batavia scout is looking more favorably upon him after his recent report but only time will tell if he gets a shot at the top level again next season.
Most Improved
MR Yann Martell - LINK
Martell was selected with one of the picks from Davenport in the huge Ednams/Alsina deal of '87. He played well in his first season at A ball but struggled during his 2nd. After the '89 draft he was moved anyway to AA to make room for some of the new guys and responded. Not only did his ability jump significantly according to the local scouts, but he played in 33 games and recorded a 3-2 record with a 2.25 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and had 44 K's to only 16 BB's. His control is suspect though so Batavia is hoping that all the money spent on coaches a few seasons back translates into off-season success.
