June represents another solid month of baseball for our squad. We followed up a 16-12 May with a 16-11 June. That’s not an outstanding winning percentage (.593), but anything close to .600 ball out of our team is certainly acceptable. Division rival California really turned on the jets in June to post an 18-9 record to move to the top of the division. They’ve been playing very solid ball over the last month and a half and it will be difficult to keep pace with them if they keep on that type of hot streak.
Not to be outdone, division-mate Baltimore also posted an 18-9 record for the month of June. This race could remain very interesting the rest of the way, though it is much more likely that one of the teams bows out of contention at some point whether that be due to injury or just not being able to keep up with the other two. At this point it would seem we might be the most likely team to take a step back since our offense continues to hold us back from being a really good team. Going into the year we were banking on several inexperienced players to be major contributors with the thought that at least half of them would be able to hold their own and the rest of the lineup would be able to pick up the slack for the other green players. Instead, every inexperienced player has struggled rather significantly so we are actually fairly thrilled to be in the position that we are in (1.0 GB in the standings, 2 games into July).

He is the rock in the middle of our lineup. This year he’s even hitting lefties (.376 | .455 | .473) which is usually not the case for him. He’s right in the middle of his prime career years and he seems to be cashing in on them. For the month:

Orinosuke Takahashi - There hasn’t been much talk of O.T. this year as he got off to a fairly slow start. He seems to be a bit streaky and he rode a hot streak for a majority of the month of June. We heavily platoon him, so at the end of the year his counting stats will be suppressed, but as long as he does his job and hits against righties, he’s definitely very valuable to us. For the month:

Joe Ponte - His return to the IL has been fairly successful. He’s been a key addition to the rotation that has allowed us to absorb the absence of Joe Aurillo while still fielding the #2 starting rotation (by ERA) in the league. He’s definitely helped out by our infield defense (66% groundball rate) as we hoped he would be. He’s averaging 7+ innings pitched per start.

SP Nate Taylor - (AAA) - He keeps bouncing on and off the BA Top 100 list and he keeps putting up good numbers. His K rate fell in June, but his K/BB rate held fairly stable so we’re not that worried about it since our biggest concern with him is his control. If he can keep his walks in check, he can pitch at the BLB level.

- BAT rookie SS Jermaine Ednams saw a 22 game hit streak ended by the Freedom on 06/04. We think that is the longest hitting streak ever attained by a rookie in league history, unless you count 1B Vance Miller’s 27 game streak in the league’s inaugural 1978 season when he was technically a rookie at the age of 26.
- BAL OF Takanibu Sato recorded his 1000th career run scored. He is the 8th player in league history to achieve this benchmark.
- LAM 3B Johnny Buzzell recorded his 300th career HR on 06/19. He is only the 4th player in league history to club that many roundtrippers. While his best years are clearly behind him he’s till only 33 and has a chance to amass some fairly healthy stat totals by the time it’s all said and done. His bank account’s not hurting much either.
- SIN rookie OF Pancho ‘Refund’ Perez recorded 5 hits (including 2 HR) against WIL on 06/13 to continue his rookie campaign assault. The DL New Brew race will be very interesting to follow for the rest of the season. It’s difficult to handicap at this point, but a troika have begun to separate themselves: Perez, his teammate Don O’Finegan (2B) and MIS Joe Rojas (DH).
- WAS and 2B R.A. Grounds agreed to a 3 year $6m contract extension on 06/16
- OF Joe Nazaire and PIT agreed to a 3 year $33m extension a day later
- After months of back and forth and undercurrents of discontent, all-world OF Mel Woodbury and the Virginia Colonials finally came to an agreement on a 4 year $81.5m extension. Both sides were able to keep the negotiations civil and more importantly out of the press, but rumblings were beginning to sound when the deal was finally struck.

June represents another solid month of baseball for our squad. We followed up a 16-12 May with a 16-11 June. That’s not an outstanding winning percentage (.593), but anything close to .600 ball out of our team is certainly acceptable. Division rival California really turned on the jets in June to post an 18-9 record to move to the top of the division. They’ve been playing very solid ball over the last month and a half and it will be difficult to keep pace with them if they keep on that type of hot streak.
Not to be outdone, division-mate Baltimore also posted an 18-9 record for the month of June. This race could remain very interesting the rest of the way, though it is much more likely that one of the teams bows out of contention at some point whether that be due to injury or just not being able to keep up with the other two. At this point it would seem we might be the most likely team to take a step back since our offense continues to hold us back from being a really good team. Going into the year we were banking on several inexperienced players to be major contributors with the thought that at least half of them would be able to hold their own and the rest of the lineup would be able to pick up the slack for the other green players. Instead, every inexperienced player has struggled rather significantly so we are actually fairly thrilled to be in the position that we are in (1.0 GB in the standings, 2 games into July).

Orinosuke Takahashi - There hasn’t been much talk of O.T. this year as he got off to a fairly slow start. He seems to be a bit streaky and he rode a hot streak for a majority of the month of June. We heavily platoon him, so at the end of the year his counting stats will be suppressed, but as long as he does his job and hits against righties, he’s definitely very valuable to us. For the month:

Joe Ponte - His return to the IL has been fairly successful. He’s been a key addition to the rotation that has allowed us to absorb the absence of Joe Aurillo while still fielding the #2 starting rotation (by ERA) in the league. He’s definitely helped out by our infield defense (66% groundball rate) as we hoped he would be. He’s averaging 7+ innings pitched per start.

SP Nate Taylor - (AAA) - He keeps bouncing on and off the BA Top 100 list and he keeps putting up good numbers. His K rate fell in June, but his K/BB rate held fairly stable so we’re not that worried about it since our biggest concern with him is his control. If he can keep his walks in check, he can pitch at the BLB level.

While his best years are clearly behind him he’s till only 33 and has a chance to amass some fairly healthy stat totals by the time it’s all said and done. His bank account’s not hurting much either.
- SIN rookie OF Pancho ‘Refund’ Perez recorded 5 hits (including 2 HR) against WIL on 06/13 to continue his rookie campaign assault. The DL New Brew race will be very interesting to follow for the rest of the season. It’s difficult to handicap at this point, but a troika have begun to separate themselves: Perez, his teammate Don O’Finegan (2B) and MIS Joe Rojas (DH).
- WAS and 2B R.A. Grounds agreed to a 3 year $6m contract extension on 06/16
- OF Joe Nazaire and PIT agreed to a 3 year $33m extension a day later
- After months of back and forth and undercurrents of discontent, all-world OF Mel Woodbury and the Virginia Colonials finally came to an agreement on a 4 year $81.5m extension. Both sides were able to keep the negotiations civil and more importantly out of the press, but rumblings were beginning to sound when the deal was finally struck.
- LOS SP Lanny Krieger recorded the 2nd shutout of his career on 06/07 in a game against MIS.
- WAS SP Cristofor Villazon blanked division and regional rival Virginia on 3 hits in their 06/07 contest.
- Veteran SP Manny Puerias of MIS picked up the 10th shutout of his career on 06/21 against Denver
- Colonials SP Nate Magness picked up his 1st CG shutout of the year on 06/23 with a 5 hit effort against Los Alamos. He relied fairly heavily on his defense as he accomplished the feat with a total of 2 K’s
- Recently promoted SP Arlen Spencer of VIR picked up his first career shutout in only his 5th career start as he blanked the Playboys on 06/26.
- Young LHP Pepe Rodriguez of PAW picked up his first shutout of his career on the last day of the month in an “effectively wild” performance against HYU. He allowed only 2 hits while he striking out only 2 and walking 6 batters.

- WAS OF Larry Fitzsymmons saw his season come to an end on 06/09
- PAW lost young 3B Victor Gonzalez for the rest of the year on 06/10 in what is becoming a long, lost season for the Patriots.
- Windy City SP Jim Fletcher suffered a significant injury to his elbow on 06/11. He will miss the remainder of the season and the first part of the next with the injury.
- The Kodiaks bullpen took a blow when Joe Jaureguy was lost for the rest of the year on 06/11
- WIL lost 2B Herb LeFebre for the remaining season on 06/13 to a fractured skull. A gruesome injury suffered while trying to make a play in the field.
- The Javelinas' SP Lanny Krieger's elbow decided it had done enough this year after pitching a shutout earlier in the month as Krieger suffered a season ending injury on 06/18
