  • This Month in the BLB - A Philly Perspective - May 1989

    Local Brews

    The month of May saw the Freedom post a 16-12 record for a .571 winning percentage. A four game winning streak to close out the month provided the 4 game win differential. For the most part it was another up-and-down affair for the squad. The offense continues to lag behind the league in most offensive categories and the pitching staff continues to keep us in games. It’s essentially the same recipe we rode to the playoffs last year, but at some point the bats are going to need to wake up if we want to stay in the Porter race.

    A couple of player highlights from the month of May:

    Joe Ponte - He’s been rock steady in the middle of the rotation and we love giving him the ball every trip through the rotation. He doesn’t overpower anyone, but at this stage of his career he just knows how to pitch and compete.<style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}
    .tableizer-table th {background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold;}
    </style><table class="tableizer-table">

    Joe Arredondo - Arguably the second best pitcher in the IL through the first two months of the season. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of the potential FA market this offseason as he weighs his side of the $13mil mutual option for next year.
    <style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}
    .tableizer-table th {background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold;}
    </style><table class="tableizer-table">

    Joe Seagarra - We honestly didn’t expect to have the opportunity to discuss Seagarra until later in the season. I’m not sure what it means at this point that he has produced a good month in the second month of the season. It kind of breaks the mold we had in our mind about him.<style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}

    Geoff Scott - Not quite the batting average we’d like to see out of Scott, but an overall great month for our 2B. He set a career high for HRs last year with 11, so seeing 7 in one month is a bit of a surprise. He’s one of the most consistent offensive forces we have available to us and we need him to keep it up for the entire year.<style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}

    Micro Brews

    Joe Lukies - He’s really making a strong case that he actually does belong at the BLB level. We just don’t have room for him right now.
    <style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}
    .tableizer-table th {background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold;}
    </style><table class="tableizer-table">
    <tr class="tableizer-firstrow"><th>AB</th><th>H</th><th>2B</th><th>3B</th><th>HR</th><th>RBI</th><th>R</th><th>BB</th><th>K</th><th>TB</th><th>AVG</th><th>OBP</th><th>SLG</th><th>OPS</th></tr><tr><td>122</td><td>47</td><td>13</td><td>2</td><td>2</td><td>32</td><td>25</td><td>7</td><td>28</td><td>70</td><td>.385</td><td>.410</td><td>.574</td><td>.984</td></tr></table>

    Alan Vaichon - Brought over in the Tim Nathan deal, we targeted the young Canadian because he can strike people out and we have a shortage of guys with that particular skill in our organization. Our scouting dept doesn’t think he can ever develop good enough control to succeed at the BLB level, but he’s shown the ability to keep his free passes down in the minor leagues (1.65 BB/9 this year, 2.17 BB/9 last year). His numbers for the month of May:
    <style type="text/css">
    table.tableizer-table {border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;} .tableizer-table td {padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #ccc;}
    .tableizer-table th {background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold;}
    </style><table class="tableizer-table">

    A “quick hit” look at goings on around the league in the second month:

    - Batavia’s Orlan Coronda threw the second no-hitter of the season against Morgantown. That was Batavia’s 1st no-hitter and brings the number of teams without one to 10.

    -Have’s and Have Nots - No-Hitters: - updated with Coronda’s no-hitter

    With:

    Batavia - 1 (Orlan Coronda)
    California - 2 ( Berru and Toapanta)
    Carolina - 1 (Issam Ghaniy)
    Denver - 1 (Romano Gonzalez)
    Hyuandai - 2 (Tommy Drewery and Erasmo Rubancava (PG))
    Indianapolis - 1 (Bill Fyson)
    Los Lunas - 1 (Alonzo Gugierrez)
    Maine - 1 (Gil O’Moore)
    Pawtucket - 1 (Joe Ponte)
    Pittsburgh - 2 (Tommy Lang and Curt Goodwin)
    Syracuse - 1 (Joe Soto)
    Virginia -1 (Eric Cafferty)
    Washington - 3 (Joe Santoyo, Joe Chavarraga and Charlie O’Rogan)
    Windy City - 2 (Dunmore Theodore (PG) and Jim Fletcher)

    Without:

    Baltimore
    Dallas
    Davenport
    Hartford
    Los Alamos
    Mississippi
    Morgantown
    Philadelphia
    Sin City
    Wilmington

    - Wilmington’s star 1B Dani Alveraz jacked 3HR in the same game on the last day of the month against Batavia.

    - Pawtucket finally had someone on their team doing the assaulting as Hamilton Remy collected six hits at the expense of Indy on 05/13.

    -Mississippi’s Curt Dodson accomplished something fairly special on 05/09, he hit for the cycle. Not only did he hit for the cycle, he did it against Maine who sports one of the best pitching staffs in the entire league.

    - Elder batsman Subaru Hiraki of Los Alamos scored the 1,000th run of his career on 05/15. The 36 year old OFer, recipient of a 3 year FA contract in the offseason (2 years guaranteed) is batting .235 | .301 | .295 for the year.

    - Baltimore’s Amistad Cabellero drove in the 1,000th RBI of his career on 05/18

    - Virginia and SP Nate Magness agreed to a 5-year contract extension that will see the young LHP earn $41.5mil.

    - The Washington Bats quietly signed star OF Michio Nago to a 3 year $32.2mil contract on 05/19

    - The Bats’ kept the checkbook open to lock up veteran RHP Martin Carlton to a 2-year $37mil deal 5 days later. Mrs. Carlton is ecstatic considering that sum is nearly $30mil more than the last contract he received after the 1985 season. Talk about cashing in.

    - Los Alamos signed CL Wayne van Slyke to a 2-year extension for $11.4mil on 05/31

    -The Bandits also locked up OF Oliver Rowell for 3 years and $12.5mil at the end of the month.

    Yup, Davenport still needs a no hitter. Wish it would happen this year, give the fans a chance to cheer something.

    Great article as always. Thanks for the read.

      Good article, as always. You skipped injuries this time around. I'm not too upset about it. Can't stomach to read about the one pitcher I want to cry about having an injury.
