With some new found financial wiggle room, we were able to go out and add a few essential pieces that we may have been missing from last years team. It's Brewmasters or bust for the 1989 Davenport Brawlers....
It all starts with pitching:
The Rotation
SP - Russ McEvoy - Age: 34 - Coming off a 21 win season, McEvoy will take the role as the Davenport ace. He will hopefully lead a veteran rotation right to the playoffs.
SP - Alonzo Gugierrez - Age 35 - Gugierrez's first season with Davenport was a shortened due to injury. In 26 games, he posted some of his best numbers of his career. But many are wondering if he can bounce back from his season ending injury.
SP - Jerry Sizemore - Age 24 - The youngest pitcher in the rotation this year. He's been steady and reliable throughout his three year BLB career. He became the team's ace last season after Gugierrez went down with injury, he put together a 17 win season, with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.
SP - Tim Nathan - Age 35 - Nathan was another one of our major pick ups this offseason. The only lefty in the rotation posted 14 wins with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP with Philadelphia last season.
SP - Jimmy O'Loughlin - Age 39 - Just when you thought the rotation couldn't get any older. Old Butch is back for another shot at glory. But he could be on the hot seat with early struggles.
Daven-'pen
LR -Thad Souders - Age 28 - Bumped out of the rotation due to the new acquisitions, Souders is the most likely to step in if one of the five starters goes down with an injury. Souders will provide long relief in the pen.
MR - Pete Collins - Age 27 - Petey looks to improve his game again this year, as he is entering his 3rd BLB season.
MR -Victor Brousseau - Age 26 - Many in the Davenport organization still view Brousseau as a starting pitcher. But he will have a new role in 1989 as a middle reliever. He is also one of the top candidates to return to the rotation if there is an injury.
SU - Joe Augilara - Age 36 - Aguilara pitched in a career high 98 games last season. He put together his best numbers as he became one of the most dependable arms for the Brawlers.
SU - Roger Simonds - Age 34 - Simonds shared closing duties last year but he will be delegated to 8th inning duty in '89.
CL - Doug Hill - Age 24 - Hill has skyrocketed to the BLB since being selected 21st overall in the 1987 draft. He impressed in the 49 innings pitched in '87, and has been given the closers role for '89. Hill has been his usual relaxed self in spring training with Simonds claiming that he is indeed a smooth criminal. Which has sparked Hill to say that he will enter the game out of the bullpen with Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" playing throughout the stadium:
