  • Kodiaks' Lint Pulls Out of IL Wildcard Race

In his weekly address to the media this morning, Kodiaks GM David Lint dropped a bombshell, turning the routine Monday morning ritual into the buzz of the sports world. In a surprise move, Lint told reporters the last thing anyone thought they would hear out of his mouth - he's pulling out.

Only 3 games back of IL wildcard leading Virginia with 7 games to go, Lint referenced his fears, the future, and the responsibility he felt he had to keep his boys safe. "I've grown a lot over the years, learned a lot about myself and how to run my team," Lint answered reporters. "So as a more responsible man and a mature GM, I'll be pulling out from now on until I decide the time is right to leave my boys in."

Lint then detailed his plans to pull out, sitting star pitchers Joe Toapanta and sophomore phenom Conan Wilkerson for the remainder of the season. "Even though I'm pulling out, there's still always a chance that it'll happen," Lint said in reference to the Kodiaks making the playoffs. "There's never any guarantees, but obviously pulling out really lowers our chances of success."

The move is not unprecedented across the sports world, but is for David Lint. A fierce competitor and passionate lover (of baseball), David Lint made his reputation as a man who would never pull out, no matter the situation. His committment to finishing everything all the way through helped make the Kodiaks a more attractive free agent destination and helped turn the team around from its losing ways in the early part of the decade. Players also love the fact that Lint never makes his boys wear a helmet, something his hitters always mention when they talk about their ability to spray balls all over the field. In a October 1987 interview, MVP Robby Shannon remarked "I love the fact that Mr. Lint lets us be ourselves. Not wearing a batting helmet makes me feel so much more free; I really think I get that much more of a true, genuine feel for the flow (of the game) and it makes me a better hitter."

The buzz around the BLB seems to have insiders questioning if Lint will actually follow through with the plan. One DL GM, on the condition of anonymity, said "I won't believe it until I actually see him pull out. He's never been one to do that. Even when he was winning 39 games, his boys, and his team, always did everything at 100%." Another IL GM wondered if the presser was just a way to throw the other contending teams off their path. "I don't buy it for a second. No matter how many times I've tried to tell him at the winter meetings, he's never listened. I think he's going to stay in the whole time and if he goes down, at least he went down shooting, right?

"That's David Lint for you. That's why he's made his way to the top. Why pull out now?"
